Wow:O

I found out today that my grandfather had been featured in the Los Angeles Times for being exceptionally skilled in the 3 "S" areas.

If anyone is wondering, my grandpa is almost 80 now.

:beef: Woah... wait, motorcycle group leader? Nice grandpa you have there.

Anyways, I'm playing in a contest, and got stuck with the Carnival of Venice. That thing plays havoc with your tongue.

Haha yeah, he has quite the threatening bike/helmet/leather jacket.

Carnival of Venice?! I know how difficult that composition is, but what instrument are you playing? Anyways, good luck;) You must be really talented to be attempting it.

Also, I found this guy on Youtube, who composed a rendition of Zelda: Wind Waker's theme, playing multiple instruments and harmonizing. I simply love it. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRv8gnBMiWM#movie_player

Clarinet forever! Anyways, it's just a Class B solo, not a Class A. But my problem is that anxiety gets into my head and I usually mess up solos...

I find it weird that I go to contests with my clarinet, not my violin...

i used to play the clarinet and what helped me to relax and play solos, was think of wht my passion is, and think that accomplishing my part to play, would help to get one step closer to my dream. it may work for other people too. :3

True. And also remember...it's a solo! That's what's great about it, if you ever get stuck, you can improvise!

I have personal experiences involving this, because I was always picked for solos in my school band when I played trumpet. (Not to mention, clarinet as well.)

Well, in contests, they kinda want you to play what's on the sheet music ;)

But just relax, and pretend it's another, regular practice. Also, what's the worst that'll happen? You'll mess up, and won't win the contest. Is that really so bad? I mean, it would be nice if you won, but is your life going to be ruined if you don't?

And, if you do mess up, just keep on playing. If you mess up, it's a lot worse to make a big deal of it and stop and start over again. If you mess up, there's nothing you can do about it, so just relax, forget about it, and focus on playing the rest of the piece as best you can.

Good luck with your contest!

btw, has anyone played/is playing Hindemith's flute sonata? Almost everything in the piece is fine, but why did he have to make the March like that?! T_T It's driving me crazy...

Thanks guys. ... Well, now I have to go and break in '3' reeds so I CAN actually play it.

Flutes... I kinda wish that I could play flutes...

It's insanely hard at first trying to actually make a noise (and equally surprising the amount of people who think you have to blow INTO the hole not across it) but once you get the hang of that, you're pretty much set.

The only downside is getting cramped fingers after playing too long. And when you start off, breathing's a total bitch, but I got used to that too- can now play the grand total of 4 bars a breath compared to the one I could play two years ago.

And no, I've not played that sonata, but it always strikes me how most people who wrote the pieces in flute books can't ever actually have PLAYED the flute, or they'd know how horribly hard their piece was to play.

I SHOULD be learning acoustic guitar but my guitar is literally gathering dust in the corner of my room. I rarely have the time or motivation to play it.

I want a harmonica too.

Well, it obviously depends on the time signature and tempo >_> But I find that I can sustain a note for waaaaaaaaaay longer on saxophone than on flute. I've never played a clarinet, but I'd guess it's a similar thing. (Seriously... I can't get the air through my saxophone quick enough. Instead of pausing to inhale, I pause to exhale because I have too much excess air xD)

@PP: The pretty things are always hard to play (<3 Chaminade) What annoys me more is when people who've never played piccolo write piccolo parts. (And they put in a C below the staff!)

About playing flutes... I never actually had trouble getting a sound. Getting a good sound is a different story, though :will: However, tone and breath support come naturally with more experience playing. (At least, that was my experience.)

EDIT: Okay, I'm going to make a comment to an even smaller niche. To people who have played (or heard) the Hindemith sonata and played Flower, Sun, and Rain for the DS (not PS2), the three measures before the first 2/4 bar in movement 2 sounds a lot like one of the opening videos to FSR. Has anyone else thought this?

EDIT2: Youtube to the rescue! 0:20 to 0:30 here, and 1:57 to 2:03 here. I must crazy, because they really aren't similar, but... GRARGH! They still sound similar to me, even though they don't T_T

In band a few years back, they tried to make the flutes play a part that was for horn in F. We pointed out kindly that flutes do not go lower than C :pft:

Yeah, that could happen when you try to play a part for another instrument. (Also an instrument in a different key than your own...? Was the part transposed?) But when someone is writing a French Horn part, they aren't going to be thinking, "Wait, will a flute be able to play this?" But when someone writes a piccolo part (or any part) they really should make sure that a piccolo can actually play that part!

I recall this problem occurring our school band as well...luckily it was mentioned, so we could fix it.

Also, as a note, if you ever play any song decently on any instrument, upload it and share it with us! I love seeing musical talent;)

I'll be recording guitar cover videos soon; a mix of J-Pop/J-Rock, Classic Rock, and other little genres here and there. I'll upload them here when I finish.

I am going to try and relearn the violin... I played many years ago, but due to moving to a school that did not have orchestra, I switched to clarinet. I'm pretty beast at the clarinet, but I don't enjoy it much lol. Wish me luck! :violin:

Mmm

I don't know if this is actually "decent."

A while ago, I tried doing all the parts of Objection 2001 on flute. Download link
Spoiler: notes
yeah... my mic is bad. It's really sensitive, but bad quality, especially on high notes.

Also, because I would be doing multiple tracks, I needed a metronome. So that's what the clicking is. There isn't a metronome feature on audacity (or at least I couldn't find it) so I just took my own metronome, and recorded a track of just the metronome. I deleted it, but while I was recording my mic picked up on it (even though I was wearing headphones ._.) And I couldn't find any way of getting rid of the clicks. So just ignore them :D

I recorded each track only once, so there's some bad phrasing. It was also a while ago (as I said) so my tone wasn't as good, and the mic makes my tone sound much much worse than it actually is.

*sigh* it is what it is...

If I get a chance, I'll record and upload an actual song :P I'm thinking Debussy's Syrinx, since I don't have accompianment, and it's written for flute alone. (This is assuming I can track down the sheet music of it T_T)

Oh, and if Gyakusheets gets the music for Yew's or Lang's theme, I might play the sax part (although it won't sound that great without the background... but oh well. And I don't wanna do Godot's Theme.)

I've always wanted to learn oboe, as I've heard the fingering for the notes is somewhat similar to flute, which I already play. But I've also heard it is rather expensive and hard to learn... although it would be worth it to be the only oboe in my school's wind ensemble!

Ah, that's a relief. Just did my solo for a judge today and got a two, which I was aiming for. ... Well, on to the science report! Report, away!

Hmm, and I was wondering, any hints for calming down in the middle of a solo? I got really shaky in the last couple lines...

I have no idea how your judging scale works, but congratz on getting a two, if that's what you were aiming for!

Anyway, if I mess up or get nervous, I just tell myself that however I played the piece already can't be changed, and I just need to forget about it and concentrate on playing the rest of the piece the best I can :)

>.> ... well, I didn't (not) figure out how to read this through all this annoying filter. As for our judging scale, I think they rate on a 1-5 scale, 1* being the highest and 5 being you need to practice WAY more. And maybe I should pick a shorter song.... but then should I use the same solo for another audition? Or a different one? :notes: Hmm, but if I pick a new one, then I only have a couple weeks to prepare it along with the scales and so forth... tough decision...

Dawn-Is that on the clarinet? Because I don't play that, but when I'm singing, or playing the guitar, I just concentrate on what I'm doing, and try to forget that there's other people listening. It works most of the time. For me, anyway. It's probably not great advice though. Congrats on getting the 2 anyway. :will:

At the moment, I have to keep singing with the guitar in my music class, because we have got our practical exams in about two and a half weeks. I can't reach this high note, though...

Yeah, it's the clarinet. Problem is if you get too nervous, it can mess up your breathing and embouchure, and that's one of the worst thing that can happen during a solo. (That and dropping your instrument in the middle of the song.)

I hope you can hit that high note, Panic!

I have no musical aptitude for instruments. That said, I can compose melodies and entire songs in my head with little inspiration.... the problem is I don't know sheet music that well so I can never put it down or play it. If I could, then yeah... I'd make some awesome music.

If the pen were an instrument, though, I'd be rocking out loud all day. All day.

Personally, though, I wish I could learn the saxophone. It's just a smexy instrument (if instruments can be smexy).

Go for it, it isn't that hard :P (Of course, I transititoned into from flute, so I knew almost all the fingering already xD)

If you do, go for alto. Soprano and baritone are just bleh, and while tenor is pretty cool, it's (IMO) easier than alto, so it would be much easier if you play alto and decide to switch to tenor than vice versa.

(Although, honestly, I like flute a lot better than sax >_> But it's all up to you :P)

Though I may not be starting a band or playing my sorrows away, I am beginning guitar lessons very shortly, having appropriated my brother's poor sad acoustic guitar whom he abandoned once he got his electric one :3

Flute's just not doing it for me anymore- I'll probably continue till I've passed my Grade 6 but then I don't think I'll carry on *_*

I just picked the alto sax back up (but serious this time. I used to never practice), and I'm teaching myself a few Miles Davis and Charlie Parker solos to start. I have a good ear for music, so I'm getting through them pretty easy.

I also play around with keyboards now and then, even though I don't know the first thing about them I'm able to play the basic melody of a tune after a couple tries. (And I taught myself Gyakuten Saiban 2's cross examination)

I'm also rapping. Hip Hop is one of the most beautiful things in life. A good rap is like a good violin solo.

Yeah, music is my life.

we are doing band stuff in music nd already i am probably falling back to vocalist. I sound rubbish, but i know what i am trying 2 acheive. Lack of breakthrough is making me glare at the guitar. After reading the topic I am actually slightly more determined though xD

Returned to playing guitar because of K-on? Wow we seem alike. I also took some petty lessons on the Clarinet and the Piano. Oh if vocals count as an instrument well I am a pretty good / above average singer.

By the way, can anybody please try to tab some AII songs? like Cornered and such? Because I am really engrossed by the music of AII. I only know Cammy Meele's theme for now. If anybody of you wants the complete tablature I can link you if you'd like.

So I tried out drums for the first time in my life today, since my friend let me into the keion club room(a dank storage shack behind the school) after school. I managed to learn kinda quick, and was able to keep up with my friend's guitar play during a BS jam session. This sounds really dorky to say, but I have years of playing music games(Drummania, Beatmania, DDR etc.) to thank for that.

Not to say that I'm good by any means; I fumbled here and there and hit the drums a little too hard(especially with my right hand, since I'm left-handed).

Still, it was a lot of fun. If I ever want to invest in an instrument again(haven't played anything other than guitar in high school), it'd definitely be a drum set.

GL. This summer, I'm resolved to learn to play this. I almost-kinda-sorta have the version from the official sheet music of it down, but this version is just... too beautiful to not learn. (Honestly, I would learn to play his version of Corridors of Time from Chrono Trigger, but I don't think I'm going grow the necessary third hand anytime soon)

From randomly playing over and over and over again I have World Revolution and To Far-Away Times from Chrono Trigger memorized, which are epic and pretty respectively, but the FF6 aria... and then arranged by zohar... <3

These are times when I wish I could play piano. I play violin, unfortunately. Anyways, I made it into MYSO, which is one of the orchestra you want to get into. So now, all I have to wait for is the seating auditions. *twiddles her thumbs*

If we all find songs we can agree on, I'm decently knowledgeable of mixing multiple recordings together. We could have a CR band cover:O

That sounds an excellent idea! We could split into parts and everyone could send you their recording of their part- then you could collate them together <3 That does sound pretty fun :3
