I (sort of) play piano. I started a year ago and taught myself. I can play two songs with both hands (The Song of Healing and Distant Traces of Beauty) and a few others with one hand (like Mario and the Zelda OoT ocarina songs). I wish I would get myself to learn more songs with both hands, but I hate playing in front of people and since the piano is in the living room, I have to wait until no one's home. Also, I'm lazy. <.>

Would anyone recommend a song for my to try and learn?

Hey, that's pretty awesome, to teach yourself how to play piano! If I'm trying to teach myself how to play a song on the piano, I don't like it when other people are in the living room and are listening. I'm trying to play What About Now by Chris Daughtry, but it's hard! :P

Well, keep trying. What helped me is to learn the right-hand part first, then the left. But then again, I memorized it, so that may have something to do with it. If you're sight reading, then I don't know. Maybe just try it? <.>

Make sure you buy a used one as your first time kit. Drums tend to be pretty expensive. They also tend to sell with the drums, cymbals, and equipment (such as things that PROP THEM UP) separately, which hides the actual price of a full kit and lulls you into a false sense of security. That new 600 dollar* kit that seems reasonable ends up being 1500 or much, much more.

*two toms and a bass drum only. Snare, cymbals, equipment, sticks, and throne sold separately. <-- is a very, very common thing.

So yeah. Just warning you. You could get a 1500 dollar kit used for about 500, maybe, and in a good quality. Craigslist is your best option.

I want an old 60s guitar; a Gibson Les Paul Classic Heritage Sunburst. It seems to be either discontinued, or over $3000 at least...

Actually, most high-grade/quality guitars are at $3000 minimum, it's a very average price.

I don't understand the appeal of Les Pauls actually. They are both super common and super boring. I also don't like sunbursts. Sorry. :(

I don't sight-read much but I'm gonna have to because next year in advanced band, that's something I'm gonna have to do ALOT. I had to switch from alto sax to tenor sax, so I'm gonna have to learn how to play it because it's in a different key so it has different fingerings. I'm doing left hand first, only because the right hand is like the lyrics of the actual song, and that's kinda easy...

I respect your opinion; the Les Paul makes a beautiful sound to me, and I like the appeal of the sunburst. I also like it because Paul McCartney played it(he's my idol, a leftie like me) and Hirasawa Yui from the anime "K-ON" plays it too. It's got a lot of meaning for me:D

I can see what you mean though. Les Pauls are really overrated and common. I just like it:D

*le sigh* Today was my last day playing in my high school band. :< Hopefully I can still have time to practice on my clarinet. I've been considering the chance of starting a chamber ensemble with my friends... but I'm not sure how we would find music to suit the instruments we play. If anyone's got suggestions for ways to put any of us together; it doesn't have to be all of us or anything (these are all the possible instruments that my friends and I know):
:ema: : (me) Clarinet, Saxophone, Piano, (currently picking up acoustic guitar)
:maya: : Clarinet, French Horn, Piano
:pearl: : Clarinet, Saxophone, Acoustic Guitar (and some assortment of random instruments that she kinda knows how to play O.o)
:lana: : Trumpet, Piano, (currently learning Clarinet)
:uramidn: : Violin
:minuki: : Flute

Just curious~

I play bass guitar, mainly. :phoenix: I dislike boring, monotonous songs where the bass just plays the base notes throughout... xD;; Also, 'm currently in a three-piece band (bass, guitar and drums) that plays -- well, anything. B)

Other instruments I know are the acoustic guitar and the violin. :hobohodo:
and the recorder if that counts |D

I guess you could get some Irish folk music to fit your band composition. Just coming back from Dublin, I've seen that that pretty much fits any combination. Plus you have a violin player, who should have a lot of fun doing that.

ttly :P If I can't find any specific music category with sheet music that matches our instrumentation, then I'll just transcribe some random piano or string music for each one... though I'd have to make up the background chords.
...hmm, now that I think about it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to make my own transcriptions of songs. I only have basic knowledge of major, minor, and diminished chords, and I don't pay attention when I'm supposed to learn more about it (now I regret it) but my piano teacher's always there for suggestions so............... *mulls it over*

The violin player in our group has only been playing for a little over a year, but I'm sure she'd welcome the challenge; I should go looking for some of that :o I suppose browsing a nearby music store would be the next step.

... Now I'm overly excited for this... I still need to figure out how many of my friends actually WANT to do this... oh boy -_-;

Listen to one album:

The Pogues' "Rum Sodomy & The Lash".

From here, listen to The Dubliners and Wolfe Tones.

From there you're free to do whatever and play. But The Pogues album is essential.

Left-handed guitars are a pain to wait for...but I finally got my Epiphone Les Paul 100 Heritage Cherry Sunburst!

Even better, it looks like Yui's guitar from K-On!, probably one of my favorite animes of all time. Definitely a bonus:P

I mainly play the piano, some simple acoustic and bass guitar and sing. Also, I play tuba and used to play alto horn in a band. I have an awesome keyboard (Nord Electro 3), a less awesome keyboard (Yamaha-something), a decent acoustic steel-stringed guitar, a cheap bass (actually my brothers, but he rarely uses it anymore, and it is in my room), a ukulele (really easy to play), a Electone (sounds pretty much awful, but I still love it... bought it on impulse, and it looks great in my room), as well as other instruments including a mouth harp, a recorder and a didgeridoo. Also, we have a piano in our living room, which I'm the only one who uses. Recently bought a sound card and other basic recording equipment, so I'm recording demos of some songs I've written. Maybe I'll post them here when I get a decent result?

I started playing in the school band in 4th grade or something, amazingly I still play there (I'll quit when I reach 11th grade, I think) . Also, I play in another local band (which is a lot more fun, since it doesn't consist mostly of little kids).

However, the instrument I think I'm most skilled at is easily piano. Started playing in 2005, when my parents bought me a keyboard for my birthday (hoping to motivate me to use the piano which had been collected dust many years, I guess). At first I was self-thaught, and enjoyed playing so much that I started taking lessons, which I still take. I also picked up the guitar a couple of years ago. Bought myself an acoustic guitar, taught myself the basics, and haven't progressed much since then. I mainly just use it when writing songs and backing myself when singing anyways.

Also, I'm in a band, started as bassist and vocalist, then I switched to playing keyboards (still sing though), but I play additional guitar and bass on some songs as well. We've admittedly had a couple of more or less failed gigs, but things have started looking brighter after a couple of recent line-up changes (the most recent one was amazing, and we'll start rehearsing with an additional member as soon as he returns from Italy). We have yet to find our sound completely, but I'd call us psychedelic rock. Occasionally prog. Sometimes alternative rock. Maybe metal. At least once punk.

oh god this post became quite long, didn't it.

I used to play the violin, before I quit. I liked it at first, but then I absolutely hated playing it. Everytime I made a single mistake, I would get yelled at by my teacher or my dad. I'm trying to pick it up again though. Slowly.
I used to play the saxophone, but I don't have a sax anymore since I was just renting it from school.

I was learning the violin. It was fun but I just had no energy for the lessons.

Even though it was only 45 minutes, 1 day a week..... my energy levels are fucking ridiculous.

When I move I might go back.

I've been playing instruments for about 8 years now. I started with the trumpet, moved to euphonium and tried teaching myself keyboard, guitar, bass and trombone within those years as well.

However, I'd really love to learn a woodwind instrument like saxaphone (purely so I could play Godot's theme on it :godot: ) or maybe the oboe. There's no way that I'd be able to unless I got private lessons outside the school, but even then I doubt I'd be any good.

Haha, that's exactly what I'm doing with my sister's sax. xD She's only in beginning band so I kind of had to teach myself, but I can play the first 10 measures or so.

OT: I played flute for 2 years while I was in middle school. Quit now since I don't have enough electives to go into high school band. =/
I'm still active on the piano though; been playing 8 years on and off.

Pick up a flute, too, if you go for saxophone. The fingerings are nearly identical (one finger off for C, D, and F#, and only really different for Bb) in the middle range, so you can test two instruments out to see which one you like (as you may just like the embrouchre and stuff for one better than the other). Also, you can play a lot of different songs in a lot of different styles on a lot of different instruments, so you may want to reconsider picking out an entire instrument based on a single song ;)
...I personally just do not like oboes, so I won't speak much on that >_> (Flute > Oboe all the way)

I'm a rabid flautist, so if you want me to spit off a gazilion reasons why flute is better than sax I can do that. (Although I tried to not be so biased in the many body of my post)

That's very true. I'll keep that in mind if I do intend to learn another instrument, but somehow, I think I'll just stick with Brass XD

I know, but I've always been a brass player since I was like, 9 or 10 years old... The sax and oboe are the two instruments that I would like to learn to give me experience with a different type of instrument.

I took piano and violin lessons when I was in elementary school. Violin was a disaster, while piano was WAY easier and better for me. I also got a flute to teach myself how to play it but I failed at it XD

Wow, you're exactly like me! I took violin lessons when I was elementary, big flop since the teacher left. Piano also in elementary, and made it all the way to Grade 7. I chose the flute first in high school band, but failed miserably, and switched to clarinet. However, leaving the clarinet in my locker caused somebody to break my lock and steal it. So, I finally switched to trumpet, which I still play today. It sits in the band room, safe and sound.

Did you fail at making the sound or the fingerings? Because your tone will get better as you keep on playing! (Since the flute doesn't have a mouthpiece, it's a lot easier to have a bad tone since you have to make your own embrouchre; the (reed(s) and) mouthpiece can't do it for you.)
