It wasn't very well known until the aformentioned 2005/2006 junction, but it's been around since 1985, IIRC. Rites Of Spring are the oldest emo band I am aware of, anyway. Having said that, they are absolutely NOTHING like the Emo bands of today.

Mid-90's Emo consists more of bands like Weezer (circa 1996), Far, Sunny Day Real Estate, etc.

Thanks for the lesson! I used to love Weezer and would never have considered them emo so.... I guess that's how much it's changed..

I should just double-clarify.... Weezer circa 1996. Most of their material isn't, but the material off of the Pinkerton album is.

And yes, FOB aren't emo.

They're more on "recovering alcoholics" than emo, in my opinion.

I mean ALL of their songs have some sort of alcoholic reference or another. But unless I'm wrong, I've never heard them sing anything along the lines of "OMG I'M GONNA SLIIIITT MAH WRIIIIISTSS". So far all of them are "I NEEEED AAAA DRIIIINNKK TO TAAAAAKKEE".

Unless people nowadays say alcoholic = emo? WHAT.

It doesn't matter what genre they are THEY STILL SUCK

I'm not the biggest fan of emo music. The vocals are to whiny and lyrics they sing are worse

I don't get the concept to Emo from both sides.

Music = How do you count a song as emo, the only i really i thin k is Last resort Papa roach. But how is greenday, my chemical romance, even Fall out boy? And does it really matter if you like an "emo" band? It doesn't make you emo.

I even got called Emo because i have a long fringe don my left eye. But i'm blind in it and it doesn't move. wou you LIKE to see that? It doesn't make me emo.

Rant over.

Don't generalize. People don't know it, or DON'T want to know it, but there ARE some good emo bands out there. If you've actually read through this entire thread then you'd know that "emo" nowadays is a bastardized version of the old "emo"-- which is basically emotional hardcore. There's a difference.

Do you even know what band I was talking about? 'Cuz it sounds like you don't. If you don't even know what the band is, then I suggest you don't respond at all. I for one think that Senses Fail's vocals and lyrics are a little bit more decent that other, more mainstream emo bands. OK, so the vocalist decided to pitch up his voice in their latest album. That was a little annoying, true, but they're still just talking about alcohol. No slitting wrists songs so far. There's one about lung cancer and another about drowning in the ocean, but that's about it.

I've been called emo and goth before, but I would classify what I listen to as alt-rock/pop-punk/emopop (as much as I hate that genre name, it works)/screamo. Like Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, Nevershoutnever, The Used, Boys Like Girls, Tokio Hotel, 30 Seconds to Mars, Three Days Grace, Paramore, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, MSI etc. And ESPECIALLY My Chemical Romance. I CANNOT tell you how many EMOPOSER remarks I've gotten due to my love of them. And they are WAYYYYYY (hehe way) more pop-punk-rock than "emo," whatever that is.

And Lind_L_Tailor, if that remark was aimed at me, I didn't get it... T_T

Also, Fugazi, SDR, that sort of thing, it may "truly be" "emo," but say that today, you'll get killed by the evility of Echelon. And the UK's MCRmy. Social terms change, and I believe that they are no longer considered "emo." They may be, as said above, what it "really is," but "emo" has changed, and is now basically pop-punk. And emopop. And some alt-rock-punk. Sad but true, you know.

PS-I'm 14. Yes, I'm a teen. That does not make my opinion any less worthwhile on this matter!
