Does anybody remember when emo was actually good? Y'know, before it just became a byword for a bunch of eyeliner-clad men whining about how nobody understands them? When the luminaries of the genre were Rites of Spring, Far, and Jimmy Eat World?

Seriously, with much of the shit that's around nowadays I occassionally have to remind myself that this genre was once good.

Why do I get the idea a certain someone is going to post something very immature and sardonic? (You know who you are).

Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco <3 XD

I understand why people hate them though. I really don't like Pete Wentz -_-

They're classed as emo even though their songs have never depressed me....

... someone explain what emo actually means plz :3

I hope you didn't mean me, I really do ;~;

I think people are labeling other people 'emo' too quickly. I know a little too much 13 year old girls that dye their hair balck and drink themselfs to wasted only to make out with each other in their bra's. Me and some friends call them "Weemo's": wannaB-emo's.

When you've got the right onces, emo's can be cool. Really.
But sometimes it's much more fun to make fun of them.

Even though I may act like one: I'm not an emokid.

Emo is short for "emotional", yet I wouldn't exactly know how to explain it either.
I can explain the stereotype: Wristcutting, scream-o-listening, crybaby wankers that think their life suck, make out with everyone that either wants to or is wasted and most probably meet up in groups to drink and cry about their sorrows.
Bad half-emokid I am.

How did I know the first reply would feature those two?

Anyway, the term Emo came about because it was originally a more emotional form of Hardcore Punk. How in the hell it became what it is now is a mystery to me.

Incidentally, there are some good emo bands around still, in particular Say Anything are nothing short of stunning.

Of course not. I put "you know who you are". You would have known if it was you.

Neither of these bands are emo. Enter Shikari are a fusion of Hardcore Punk and Rave. Bring Me The Horizon are Deathcore.

But whilst on the topic of Enter Shikari, BEST FUCKING GIG I EVER WENT TO MAAAAAN.

Hmm, Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco are not emo enough to be considered emo. I think all the emo jokes and people making fun of emo kids is kinda old now. Stop beating a dead horse and move on to something else(like scene kids). At least where I live, they're a dying breed. Of course, I'm not in high school anymore,so I can't tell for sure. Just when I go to the mall, I don't see them around as much. Hot Topic is mostly now crowded with nasty, grungy looking people who don't bathe. Well... I still listen to Finch, Taking Back Sunday(they're older stuff), and Jimmy Eat World from time to time...Other badns too, but I just woke up and I'm really too tired to think :yogi:

OMG HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS. Emo to the extreme. They actually came from Ohio, where I live and one of the band members died... Anywho, more emo bands: Bayside, From First to Last, Silverstein, Thursday, Underoath(screamo)Dashboard Confessional,Something Corporate(those last two have been around for awhile, they were probably the first ones who mainstreamed emo).

I would consider Good Charlotte to be wannabe emo. Not emo enough, but wannabe's will pretend that it's the most emo band out there...

I never ever understood why Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco were considered emo.
Not that I'm big fans of them, just I can't see why they're under that "genre".

If anything "emotional" is considered "emo" music, then most ballads by famous vocal artists that sing about heartache and breakups should be considered emo too. Like "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt. That's an emotional song, is that emo?
I really don't think there should be a genre called "emo".

But if the music we're describing is more "I hate myself and want to die", they should call it something else.

I think it was a bit of a gradual thing, although I think there was something of a junction around 2005/2006. It also changed somewhat in the mid-90's, but I really like mid 90's emo. That's probably my favourite kind.

It wasn't very well known until the aformentioned 2005/2006 junction, but it's been around since 1985, IIRC. Rites Of Spring are the oldest emo band I am aware of, anyway. Having said that, they are absolutely NOTHING like the Emo bands of today.

Mid-90's Emo consists more of bands like Weezer (circa 1996), Far, Sunny Day Real Estate, etc.

Fugazi aren't really what i'd call screamo... actually, Screamo is something entirely different. Or maybe that stuff was once called screamo. I'unno. I've heard what they do called Emocore... which, if i'm not mistaken, is a term older than Emo. Basically, "Emotional Hardcore".

And yes, I love Fugazi. :edgy:

There's also Post-Hardcore, emo's sister genre. It does get a tad confusing sometimes.

Yeah, emo's been around for awhile, but the genre didn't become more mainstream until like... Something Corporate or Dashboard Confessional(Screaming Infidelities, nuff said), I would say. Mostly because that was around the time when my sister got into those bands. I will say this again: Fall Out Boy is NOT emo. It's just interesting to me because when "Sugar, We're Going Down" became popular(I swear, the radio officially killed that song for me.), everybody LOVED FOB. Nobody considered them emo. It seems that now that hip hop music is popular right now, most people think that anything rock is just SO emo.
