Professor Layton and the Last Specter for the Nintendo DS family of systems is the fourth installment in the Professor Layton puzzle adventure series. It begins a new trilogy that is a prequel to the original games, set three years before the events in Professor Layton and the Curious Village(TM). The game contains more puzzles than any in the series to date. As a North American exclusive to the overall Professor Layton and the Last Specter package, a bonus role-playing game called Professor Layton's London Life(TM) containing more than 100 hours of additional content will be available to players from the start of the game.

That's a bit of a kick in the nuts to our European friends. I guess they just didn't want to invest the time to translate London Life into multiple languages.

That's... some epic kind of bullshit, there.

Layton is a great seller in Europe. Frankly, I'm ashamed.

It is worth noting that it's slightly ambiguous as to whether London Life as a whole is exclusive, or it being available from the beginning is exclusive. Someone on NeoGAF tried getting in touch with Nintendo Germany, but they were noncommittal.

The Amazon page and Nintendo's PR email both give it an October 17th release date, where did you get 19th from, Bolt?

This is important. I hope that's the case. But it would make sense if Europe didn't get LL; after all, it's marketed as having "over 100 hours of gameplay", and that... that has to be a lot of content to localize. And the Layton games always get fully, 100% localized (name, logo, text, images, and voices) for the entire European market, so I guess their choice was between also translating it to Spanish, Italian, French, German and Dutch, or not releasing it in Europe. I don't think they could afford paying for such a huge translation, nor waiting for it (they would have to delay the game until around February in Europe), since the 3DS is picking up a lot of steam in Fall and Winter (mainly thanks to Star Fox 64 3D, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario Land 3D and Kid Icarus: Uprising), and the DS might not survive until then.

The Last Specter, just like Kirby Mass Attack and Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, is one of the DS' last glories, at least in the West, but I'm willing to bet that with the current dates, Layton will sell better, specially in Europe (maybe EU/NA sales will be pretty balanced this time around thanks to Europeans importing LS for London Life, since DS is region-free)

Hey, you're right; I think I must have misread it the first time I saw the date and sort of glazed over the remaining times. Sorry about that, I must be tired or something.

Time to get hyped for Professor Layton and the Last Specter, though I hope the Europeans will have the London Life RPG since no one should miss out on something like 100 hours of content.

The whole NA exclusive thing still kind of confuses me. Why have the RPG being available at the start an exclusive feature? Maybe Americans are just too lazy to finish the main game to get to playing London Life unlike the Japanese.

Maybe NoA's marketing of Last Specter has something to do with that. So that casual gamers say "Hey, look, an awesome minigame!", and casual players looking for the RPG don't say "Hey, I have to play the entire game for the minigame!? Screw it!". This way casual players get a benefit, and hardcore players/fans aren't affected. Win-win situation. Besides, if you don't want to play London Life until beating the game, nothing's keeping you from it.

Just going to leave this fancy EU boxart here.

While the US boxarts are true to the original, the EU ones still look beautiful in their own way even with a severe lack of London Life.

That's a nice-looking box, and the logo is just amazing. Shame that I'll have to import it from America.

Can I play an NA DS game on my 3DS?

Wikipedia says yes, but I'm still not convinced.

No, the 3DS and DSi seem to be region-locked and only play regional DS or 3DS games, sorry.

:objection:
The DSi and 3DS CAN play DS games from other regions, otherwise I wouldn't be able to play Ouendan. However, 3DS games are indeed region locked.

Besides that, here is a scan from Nintendo Power showing English screenshots of The Last Specter. So the Professor DOES see puzzles everywhere.

He should probably see a doctor about that.

Got my issue of Nintendo Power in today and the Last Specter coverage actually goes on for one more page. Not much to say except it shows some English screenshots of London Life.

Actually, I think I'll grab myself a European version.

I cannot stand the American voice actors.

Screw London Life until I've finished my European version, then I'll buy an American version.

More puzzles than ever before!

It's like they were too lazy to state how many puzzles were in the game.

Yet another trailer!

Not really much of a trailer for the Last Specter, but it has A COUPLE OF SENTENCES OF NEW VOICED DIALOGUE. Everybody freak out...

Well, the smaller MORE THAN X PUZZLES banner is certainly a good way to make up for the terrible logo.

I don't care, I'm hyped as all heavens. October 15, 16 and 17 are going to be 3 days full of Layton, I can hardly wait for then. And that trailer IS NOT HELPING-

More screenshots!

The puzzle variety in the screenshots looks miles better than what we got three years ago with Curious Village, in fact looking back and playing Curious Village and looking at what we have now it looks quite archaic in comparison.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to listen to some music...
