The Medium was using Worm, a Dark spell. Had it not been a critical hit, Dorran would have withstood even a Wind spell, though he would have been left with only 3 HP (Worm would have left him with 6 HP). The bonus damage doesn't become really pronounced until higher weapon levels.

As for the odds, the Medium had a 74% chance of hitting and a 3% chance of a critical hit.

Hmm I'm not familiar with the Worm spell, what game is it from and what's special about it?

The name comes from a C-level Dark tome in Radiant Dawn, but I changed some of its stats to make it suitable as an E-level tome for this RP. There's nothing special about it. Essentially, it's this RP's version of Flux. I should also point out that some of the higher-level tomes and weapons are my own design.

well that was bad luck...but its true i expected it do do good damage since i got almost no resistance...ill admit i thought id be far enough to be out of its reach buut...i was planning to ask about its damage before engaging it buuut...at least this proves to me for when the real battles begin to try and avoid encountering mages. :P

and besides...at least i took two of the enemy's down before being destroyed.

Done. It's now the enemy's turn. The Medium leaves the river and attacks Lucius, hitting and doing 14 points of damage, which is exactly enough to defeat him. That's the end of the enemy's turn. Lida, it's your turn now. Jade's transform gauge is now at 15. Here's her range.

Image

I think the take-away lesson from this latest series of events is that you should keep an eye on each enemy's range, especially if said enemy is capable of defeating your character in a single combat. That's two people in two turns who got too close to the Medium and were taken out before they could attack (though, to be fair, Dorran only went down because the Medium got a critical hit).

Jade's attack hits, doing 20 points of damage and taking out the Medium instantly. The combat decreases Jade's transform gauge to 14. In addition, she levels up, gaining +1 HP, +1 Speed, and +1 Luck. Below are her new stats. Green means she improved the stat both times she leveled up, red means she improved it only once.

Also, Jade has 1 movement point left. Here's her range:

Whoops. I just noticed when preparing Ardan's range that I had mistakenly treated a plains tile as though it was a foliage tile. Here's Crelarus's correct movement range. Since I made a mistake, I figure it's only fair that I give you a chance to change your move, DoMaya.

To be fair, Dorran just got unlucky. As for Lucius, he would have withstood that attack if he had stayed behind for a bit and let Ardan heal him. Anyway, the enemy doesn't do anything on its turn. Lida, it's now your turn. Jade's transform gauge is at 19. Here's her range:

Also, if the party encounters an actual battle before Crelarus joins them (as is appearing increasingly likely, given how much DoMaya's posted in the main thread lately), should Crelarus be denied consolation experience? DoMaya has been participating in the test battles, so it's not as if he just up and disappeared without telling anyone, but at the same time, he hasn't been making much of an effort to get Crelarus to join the party in the main thread.

I'll have Jade move two left, two up, and one left, so she's standing on the bridge.

As for Crelarus getting consolation experience, I say he should if he, say, joins before or even during the battle. But if he doesn't participate in the fight at all, I say he'll have to wait until the next go-round to get the consolation experience. Just my humble opinion.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking. If Crelarus is still at the Laughing Cat when the rest of the party has been on the road for two days, he shouldn't be subject to any consolation experience if the party gets attacked.

Anyway, speaking of the man with writer's block, DoMaya, it's your turn. Here's Crelarus's range:

It is true that this second test battle took a fairly nasty turn thanks to that Medium, but that was more so a matter of recklessness and bad luck than being underleveled.

Also, as a side-note... tea? Wouldn't that keep you up?

Pfft! It's got nowhere near as much caffeine as coffee does and with the right aroma and flavours I find it can be very relaxing and quite tasty. I especially recommend fruit teas, a good lemon or mango tea is great or some vanilla.

as a side note...besides jade (well ardan as well...but hes a priest) none of us really have any resistance making mages one of the nastier things for us to encounter.

and yes if i hadn't forgotten mages could move through water id likely have moved back a bit farter back then i did. plus a critical is always a bonus. >_>;;

Well I dunno, if push came to shove in the games I often would let a Priest 'bait' a magic user into range of deadlier allies.

well yes theres that...but i meant more about survivability in encounters...since all of us lack any resistance mages are bound to take a chuck outta us except jade as for now shes capable of one shoting things even without a critical hit. even then she has good resistance.

Generally, I only call it "one-shotting" if the attack can take out the target when he/she is at full HP. Dorran would have withstood a regular attack, and Lucius was only defeated because he had exactly 14 HP left. Lucius would have withstood the attack if he had had one more HP. Also, yes, Jade and Ardan both have pretty good resistance, so they would make decent mage bait (though Ardan's poor defense means he's only useful as bait if there aren't any physical attackers in the area). When transformed, Jade's resistance is so high that the Medium's spell would have done no damage.
