For most of people here, Athena.

I don't think so, actually. Although Chishio might appear to be annoying at times.

Can't say without playing the game.

Was their "reveal" something of a surprise, or was it pretty obvious who they were after a certain point? Were they intimidating? Was their motive compelling? Were they ultimately satisfying to take down? (I realize these are questions that you can't really answer in detail without getting into big spoiler territory, but just a "yes" or "no" or a short non-spoilery explanation would be fine.)

Spoiler:
It was never "obvious" that they were the killer like with some other killers/cases, but as the final case/end of the game was approaching, and I was thinking about who the killer would be, they were pretty much always at the top of the list. In other words, it's not OMGWTFBBQ like in GK2-5, but it's also not like you know for sure it's them as soon as they show up or as soon as you get a certain piece of evidence.

I... wouldn't really call them intimidating.

Motive was pretty weak. The final boss did a 'certain action,' and everything following did actually make sense in terms of why they were doing what they did and whatnot, but there was basically zero explanation for why they did that 'certain action' in the first place.

They were... satisfying at first, but it gets kind of Alba-y by the end. But even worse than Alba, because the final boss' various admissions include illegal things but you STILL can't get them for that stuff for some reason >.<

Spoiler:
The way you're describing it makes it sound like an unfolding mystery in terms of discovering their identity. I kind of like the idea of that - as opposed to AAI, for example, where Alba just kind of came out of nowhere. I WAS worried that the big bad might be Alba-like in the final confrontation, though :/ I guess I'll just see how I feel when I play the game.

Now, even if you apologize...I will not forgive you.

The 'certain action' I mentioned in the other post was indeed killing Athena's mother, though.

It's not easy to see holes on a body lying away from you, but I'm surprised that there was no bleeding animation. Better yet, what happened to the rest of his masks? There was only one left by the time he collapsed.

I don't want to affect anyone's opinion of him, but...

Mr. Beauty Parlor. I detest people who share his sort of attitude, and I rarely use the word "detest". I don't mind men who use perfumes or dress in purple; I just hate this guy. (I do admit that his theme is nice, though.)

He's a terrible person, yes, but as a character I found him absolutely hilarious.

Definitely the most FABULOUS character in GS5.

He was hilarious the first time I saw him. Then, after replaying through the case, he started getting on my nerves. And yet, I still can't stop laughing at Redd White's atrocious English, no matter how many times I go through that case. I think it's more about how the jokes with Biyouin stop being funny after a while and less with his actual character. I agree he makes a good villain, but I don't find him all that innovative in character design... aside from the phone shoulder pads and random green hair. Those, I definitely appreciate.

Edit: Sorry if I legitimately spoiled anyone. It's not common seeing references like that in the Japanese version.

Not to mention his theme sounds very ripoff-ish of Luke Atmey's theme :P Oh, and it's nice to hear I'm not the only one who loves Redd White. He's so underrated. His dialogue cracks me up every time. Splendiferous!

I think that was just the game saying "this is still on easy-mode in the second case" as well as making it semi serious while still retaining the goofy tone set up in case 1. They even did that with Manfred Von Karma. IMO that's how I like Ace Attorney best. There are some cases that get a bit too edgy. It's important to me that they balance the humor properly with all the seriousness.

And about that theme. I agree. I'm still pretty excited for case 2 when Dual Destinies is out here because I think it has, what seemed to be, some of the funnier characters in the game.

Even if the case is still on easy-mode, I still think that it was thematically a terrible decision for the case.

Alright, it's pretty obvious, I know JK. But yeah some of the case premises in DD are... questionable i'd say. Apparently the writer even had an idea for a case premise that said "Doll murder case, why was the doll killed?" I don't really get the way he does that? Does he actually believe that players will think it could be true?

He himself admitted it didn't make much sense after all ^^' I have a few questions, returning to this thread's real purpose.

1. Why is Phoenix even allowed to defend an animal? Usually in such cases there is no trial, dangerous animals are just put down. There is explanation given, right?

Spoiler: GS5 endgame spoilers
2. Why Phantom isn't arrested immediately as soon as he takes off the first mask? I mean, that is incredibly suspicious and it was pretty much proven he's the Phantom, with the very fact he has these masks... Also, it would make sense to forcibly take all of these masks down, wouldn't it?

They said the Orca DLC case is the only case they've made that's actually based on a real-world trials believe it or not... so I guess that's why they justify Phoenix being able to cross-examine a whale and all the other nonsense in that case.

Also, I know Yamazaki mentioned the Doll idea was bad, but why would anyone even consider it? I guess it's some sort of cultural difference or something. Japanese devs often think very far outside the box from what I've heard.

What are the specifics of that comment (original text)? Because it sounds more like a reference to Takagi Akimitsu's novel Ningyou wa Naze Korosareru (Why Were The Dolls Killed?), a detective novel so famous there's no way Yamazaki hasn't heard about it/read it.

Well, the purple suit was a dead giveaway. (What is with this series' discrimination against people in purple suits?)

Yes, briefly.
Spoiler: TR
The only reason the trial even existed was because of Nick. Udgey didn't have a clue since he was only given a name, and Blackquill just wanted to challenge this crazy guy who thinks he can defend a whale.

Spoiler: 5-5
Having masks doesn't prove that he's the Phantom; they just prove that he's a prick. By that point, it didn't matter how suspicious he looked; it was a matter of not having enough evidence to pin him down for Aoi's murder - or even Mari's. Remember that the conclusion of the UR-1 retrial was simply "a new suspect"; not "the Phantom is the suspect", even though everyone knows it's him and the evidence points in his general direction.

I'm sure they took all the masks off when they sent him to detention. Before he was proven guilty beyond doubt, though, no one had the right to initiate physical pressure except Taka.

About Biyouin's theme, you have a point. The composer for DD, Noriyuki Iwadare, also did the music for T&T, so his theme was probably inspired by Atmey's.

How does "Though Route" work? Is it kinda like logic chess, I've not seen any screencaps nor footage of any sort, except with one of Apollo with his eyes closed, like a cut in. Is it kinda like logic, where you have to piece evidence together...I dunno. Bolt? You'd be the one to know.

You have to pick the right option out of all of the presented ones. Basically the same as usual picking up an option, just in character's mind and it's rather a series of those instead.

Spoiler:
It's Ikuya.

She takes pride in her nonfiction works (but had been avoiding the paparazzi for several years). When she realized that someone had used her as a fabricated witness - thus making what she thought she saw to be "fiction" - it was the last straw, so to speak.

Now if only I could figure out she could fit a fan behind her head and make that scarf float...

I think people are blowing the "Athena is TERRIBLE" stuff way out of proportion. Her role in the game was a little overdone, I agree with that, but as a character I liked her quite a lot.

Keeping in mind I haven't played the game or seen any case streams yet, (I've only watched trailers and other promotional stuff), what exactly is the problem people are having with Athena? At least from the trailers she seems really interesting and a well-crafted character. What are the main issues people are having with her?
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

I guess people dislike how central she becomes to the game's overarching plot for a supporting character. Then again, she's just as often overshadowed by other characters that it doesn't really matter overall. When Ash first used the term, I'm sure he was using it loosely. Athena only seems like a Mary Sue depending on how someone could see her.

In fact, I can easily make a comparison between her and how Nick had been when he first started off. There were too many times I wanted to reach through the screen and deal another blow to his head with that fire extinguisher. Ironically, Apollo was a bit safer from my rage because he didn't get as much development yet, and thus I couldn't hate him as much. So far, I can't imagine myself swinging a fire extinguisher at Athena and feeling relieved about it. not that fire extinguishers make for ideal bludgeons in the first place

So yeah... play the game to find out for yourselves, you inquisitive bunch.

I wasn't using the term Mary Sue loosely, but I think I do use it in a different way most people are used to. I have no real problems with her personality (Athena's character as a human being) per se, but her as a character within the abstract structure of the game story. As I indicated here, I see the Mary Sue as a trope of author representation/insertation not in terms of flawlessness, but in terms of how a character, in my view, fits within the story structure and what roles (s)he fullfills (and the necessity of that). In my mind, she's too present, also fulfilling roles she didn't need to.

In hindsight, I should have known that most people here would look at the term Mary Sue as a term to describe personality (though I had no idea people actually consider the term to be hateful O_o), but as I mostly look at plot-structures etc, I still think it's usable.
