It's not the present topic, but

2. Why Phantom isn't arrested immediately as soon as he takes off the first mask? I mean, that is incredibly suspicious and it was pretty much proven he's the Phantom, with the very fact he has these masks... Also, it would make sense to forcibly take all of these masks down, wouldn't it?

Spoiler: GS5 endgame spoilers
Fulbright-masked-Phantom doubts that he is Phantom. In his words, he is top secret inspector who investigated Phantom, but he helped Phantom because Phantom took his family hostage and blackmailed him. Of course that's all lie.

He kept that claim after taking his masks off; any suspicious things that could prove he is international spy, could also prove he is international inspector.

And, he once tried to escape from the court, that means he couldn't be arrested by such ordinary manners. :yogi: Cmon, he didn't became international spy without fighting skills and spy's device. He felt horror and gone panic in endgame, that's the only way to prevent him escape.

Personally, from what I've seen I liked Athena. There were some problems with her writing and sometimes her role felt a bit odd, but she was really interesting as a character and really helped the Agency's dynamic. Of course, I have only information from others to go off of, so I'll reserve any ultimate judgement until I play the game through myself.
For now, more questions!
Spoiler:
1. For the life of me I cannot remember the first victim's name and the name of the dead animal trainer (the woman who died 1 year ago prior to the case of Buckler and the whale). Could someone remind me of their names?
2. Phantom is a real grey area for me. I understand the following: he is an international spy and the final boss of Dual Destinies, he killed the real Detective Bobby Fulbright somewhere around a year prior to the game and disguised as him throughout the cases, he also killed Mari Kizuki/Cykes and Daichi Aoi, has been at his 'job' for so long that he no longer remember who he really is, has his breakdown and is then shot by an unknown sniper, although not fatally as the bullet missed his vitals. All his masks come off and his true face is exposed, but the player never sees it as it is hidden by shadow.
I'm somewhat in the dark about everything else. Could someone tell me why he chose to kill Mari and Daichi? I understand it had something to do with a moonrock, and I think Athena's earrings are crafted out of it, but I'm confused about it otherwise.

Alright, I have some questions!

1. How many "chapters" are in the game? (as in, parts of a case, from one save point to another, for instance, Justice for all has 23 parts, and Trials and Tribulations has 24 parts.) No story spoilers, please.

2. I know that there is no 3D evidence in the court-record. Is there any point in time where you look at any 3D evidence? Please no story spoilers.

3. I also know that you can only investigate areas relevant to the investigation. Did the developers find another way to include all that great dialogue about each scene? Please no spoilers.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

It's just one of those things that are overused in fiction - especially novice fanfiction - that people have gradually come to accept it as a sign of "amateurism". That isn't the case, strictly speaking, but it does give readers that sort of impression. I completely agree that her role in the game sometimes oversteps a few bounds, but she doesn't shine out much otherwise. It's the result of the team trying too hard to push a new character into the spotlight along with others who've already gained plenty of development over the series. (And yet, it worked just fine with Blackquill. It's a pretty thin line anyway.)

1. Hozumi Kaku; Suzumi Natsukaze (Oct. 24 is a tough wait, isn't it?)

2. He was supposed to be after Mari's research into psychological analysis integrated into robot programming. It's a bit unclear in the game about why he had to kill her for it, but I assume she resisted.
As for Daichi, he was a victim of circumstance. The first HAT mission retrieved a piece of moon rock that later was put on display in the robotics room for Mari's convenience. On his way to steal the research material, the Phantom encountered young Athena and the fight left a bloodstain on that rock. To prevent his identity from being leaked, he tried to rid of the rock by ejecting it into space. By the second HAT mission, Hoshinari and Daichi recovered the missing container and its contents, but were attacked by the Phantom, who stole the moon rock again. A piece of it was later discovered among the remnants of the courtroom bombing.

2. Yes, a few.

3. Yes, since you can examine everything in a place where you can investigate.

Oh, it's not you; I tired myself out replaying the cases after a certain someone requested a tally of cross-examinations, evidence, and profiles all at once. (Since the game only allows the player to jump to select scenes within cases from the main menu, I couldn't just go anywhere I liked.) I thought to include the number of Mood Matrix sequences, but I'm not sure how to count some of those masses of text. Anyway, that's six enjoyable cases in all. Yaaaaay...

Think cases from the main GS games. There's so much funny dialogue to be found by just examining irrelevant things, and in GS5 that might be gone now that you can only examine so few places.

Of course not. You can always go out of your way to point at or present things that seem to have no relevance to what's going on at the moment. You're also free to return to the Wright Anything Agency whenever you like to chat with Trucy or whoever's around. It's always been like that. Even if the story progression during the investigations is rather linear and fast-paced, it's still up to you at what pace to enjoy the game, especially now that you don't have to move places one step at a time. The locations are all listed out and available after the first visit.

In fact, the pacing does remind me slightly of Ghost Trick's.

I was thinking of those little lines in the office, in places not relevant to the investigation, etc. They always did a bunch to add to the characterization and world depth, so I was wondering if they somehow had found out a way to get that kind of stuff out there through some other means than investigating. Good to hear that you can still present stuff as much as you want, though.

Oh, I want to ask something too, actually. How long (approx.) did it take to finish the game for most of you? I remember being surprised at how fast I reached the end compared to Layton vs GS.... (the DLC does add quite some time though).

Erm, maybe... almost 3 weeks, at broken intervals, looking for random things. I later went back and replayed the cases for extra bits I may have skipped over, though I haven't gotten around to exploring the hidden extremities of optional dialogue trees. Yet, I don't think I'll have nearly as much time for that now, so it'll be a while before I return to it.

Six days, excluding DLC.

To be honest I rushed through it, though, so that (1) I wouldn't be spoiled online (as you can't spoil what you already know), and (2) I could properly moderate this section without having to worry about spoiler tags (and also so that I could properly take care of any cases of unmarked spoilers or whatever)

Hey people my question is:

Is it possible to change the languages of the game? I guess yes but you never know...
And more importantly is it possible to change the language of the cutscenes
like into the good old Japanese with subs? My biggest fear is that the cutscenes will be
in the same language the game is played on :larry: ...I really prefer the Jap/eng sub version
over the dubs... :yogi: :udgy: :yogi:

Hey, this isn't really a 'spoiler' but I want to know.
Supposedly some JP fans complained about how the investigation phase you can't 'investigate' as much as usual of the scenery.

So what did this mean, exactly? I mean in the old games you could only investigate certain things in the picture.

Are there entire locations you can't investigate at all?

I don't think it's confirmed yet, but probably no: no options for multiple language tracks/subtitles.

You can only examine certain locations (when the story/investigation calls for it).

How often are cinematic camera angles used in DD in comparison to PLvsAA (which had a lot of those)

I'd say... around the same level. Of course, unlike PLvsAA, there's no need to pan up close to the gallery because no one jump out to the witness stand to testify. PLvsAA also does zooming more frequently during investigations. Yet, DD has multiple alternating camera angles during investigations, and whenever Athena starts up the Mood Matrix (very often) the camera swings around to face the screen, among other things.

I really disliked that in the Investigation games in most cases Edgeworth would figure out everything during the investigation parts and then the player only had to show this stuff again during the rebuttals, instead of actually finding new contradictions.

E.g. in AAI2-1
Spoiler:
you find the red coat, Edgeworth performs all the deduction necessary to get to the conclusion that it's the assassin's coat, and that the assassin has a wound, and then they call de Killer in based on that conclusion. Then his first argument against you is "Just because I have a wound, why does that show that I wore the red raincoat?" and after that, he follows it up with "Just because I wore the red raincoat, why does that show that I'm the assassin?" It's all stuff that has already been figured out for you, and at least half the cross-examinations feel like Edgeworth is just explaining logic that he has already figured out, rather than actually finding new contradictions between people's statements and the evidence at hand, as the series is designed for.

Do we have this problem in AA:DD?

My question is, As I know there a fewer cross-examinations in the main game (30) compared to the older games

Do they use more mechanics in cases, instead of all cross examinations
(Are there more:
"Take That" evidence presents,
"Point out the contradiction in the photo"
"Choose the answer from the 3 choices"
in addition to testimonies?
)

Also,

About how long are mood matrixes?

At times, but not as frequently as in an AAI game. The purpose of Edgeworth's investigations is to draw out a truth from the state of the crime scene itself before interrogations and compare facts then. It's only natural that there'd be a lot of repeats of facts and arguments. I just wish the repeats weren't tied in with the interactivity. That's a case of intentionally dragging out playtime with little extra entertainment quality. The team better watch out for that in GK3.

I guess you can add that Athena likes to run around the courthouse during her free time. Splendid use of time.

Also,

About how long are mood matrixes?

The Mood Matrix sequences take the place of some cross-examinations, and each one can be about 1 - 2 cross-examinations long. Unlike during a cross-examination, where the only way to draw out more info is to press, a MM sequence requires the player to "pinpoint" the contradicting/unusual emotion in regards to the given statement or image based on that statement. During the overload sequences, the player is to "search" for the source of the overload within the witness testimony, and once that is cleared up, the normal MM sequence plays out. At certain times, even after completely cleaning up the testimony, the player may need to present contradicting evidence, as per a normal cross-examination. (Of course, there's no point in pressing this testimony because you've already drawn out as much as you can.)

I don't think there are more "Take that!" presentations or picture-pointing than usual, but there are always plenty of answer choices. The option system is implemented into the Thought Route sequences as well, but without penalty. (There are only a couple moments where double penalty is applied, and never the full bar, but there are three bad endings in this game, including the DLC case.)

...With such a system in place, Nick will never get his 15-minute victory.

I guess you can add that Athena likes to run around the courthouse during her free time. Splendid use of time.

Hence why she can run so fast, that Phoenix can't catch up. :nick:

To those who have played, what is your favorite part of the whole game? (purposely being vague here, because I want to know what the goods are)

2 of the 3 bad endings come in the 5th case; the other one is in the DLC case. For those interested in searching for them without reading my spoilers:
Bolt Storm wrote:
Spoiler: Multiple cases
  • Case 5: Fail on Simon's testimony.
  • Case 5: Fail on Fulbright's second testimony (eg. the final one).
  • Turnabout Return: Fail on Ikuya's Mood Matrix segment. (You actually have to do this one indirectly by screwing up presenting corroborating evidence after picking out the "sadness" emotion, because Mood Matrix has no penalties and all that.)

There are no new images/animations that show during these endings, and they aren't voiced. That doesn't make them any less depressing, though.
Spoiler: Case 5
  • Phoenix fails to break Simon's testimony, and Simon is convicted for the charges that landed him in prison 7 years ago. His sister disappears with the hostages, and Phoenix never sees Trucy again. Athena leaves the office permanently, Apollo never returns, and the agency is shut down.
  • Phoenix fails to break Fulbright's final testimony, and Fulbright gets away scot-free. Athena is still declared innocent, but the spy disappears for good.

Spoiler: DLC
  • Phoenix fails to break Ikuya's testimony, so his charge against Orla stands. As per protocol, Orla is put down peacefully, never to reawaken.

Dang, dude. 2 out of 3 of those endings are depressing.
Spoiler:
If the Fulbright ending was canon, that would have been a dull ending, I guess.

I came up with my own version of the events for the first one.
Spoiler: Case 5
Judge: Mr. Blackquill, I find you...
GUILTY
As for your sentence, you shall be crucified.
Phoenix: What?!
Athena: No.... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Edgeworth: :objection: Your Honor! This is beyond ridiculous-
Judge: Overruled. *slams gavel* Court is adjourned.
Phoenix: After Blackquill's sentence, I got a call from Trucy.
Blackquill's sister escaped with the hostages and Trucy. I knew I'd never see her again.
As for Athena, she just sat there, crying alone in sadness. And then one day, she just left the office.
Apollo never came back.... those terrible events enraged him so hard, that he just left us.... forever.
I'm sorry, Mia..... I can't go on like this.

Does Blackquill break his cuffs in his "penalty" animation? I remember you could kind of see it in the background of one of the trailers. I'm way too paranoid to look for a clearer version of it on YouTube at this point, though.

Yeah, I guess I could just wait until the game comes out to see all of the animations and such, but damn, I'm impatient.
Now, even if you apologize...I will not forgive you.

Who appears in the credits and what do they talk about? How big are Trucy and Pearl's roles and what cases do they appear in?

Oh, you mean his damage animation. No, he only breaks through when he's really pissed... not that it matters, since Fulbright has a taser.

Kanji wrote:

Spoiler: Case 5, DLC
Trucy appears in cases 2 and 5, briefly at the beginning of each, while Pearl shows up in case 5 and DLC. For most of case 2, Trucy's left alone in the office, but later meets up with Phoenix. In case 5, she and Phoenix are together until she runs off to explore the space center. Pearl stops by when he returns to the office. She comes to deliver the letter and help around with cleaning, but joins Phoenix's investigation for a bit. Returning to the space center, they find that Trucy and some others have been taken hostage.
After their investigations, she returns to the village to study up on black psyche-locks and returns the next morning with an answer.
As for the DLC, Pearl was on a school field trip when the murder happened. She got herself lost, met with Nick and Athena, and recharged the Magatama. Then, he promptly broke through her secret... about getting lost.
Later on during the case, she helps Phoenix guide Orla to follow instructions, using the sound of a whistle recorded on someone's phone.

As for the credits, I've translated them all:
Rubia Silve Ryu wrote:
Spoiler: Credits
Trucy: I'm still thinking about what I should do for Apollo, who's just returned to the agency.
By the way, I've been taking "clients" of my own!
Looking for a lost cat, installing an air-con, tutoring on computers, looking for lost things...
What's that? But they're not defense clients, you say?
That's okay! This is the Wright Anything Agency, after all.

Juniper: Thena and Apollo's great efforts were amazing to watch...
I'll have to study really hard to become a judge someday.
My grandmother used to say, "Eating beans can help diligent study."
Ah, but which should I choose? I have both black and white beans back home...
Maybe I'll grow some red "like the sun" beans instead.

Payne: The end of the Dark Age of Law? Mm-mm... It's about time.
But, I believe getting guilty verdicts by any means necessary is still sometimes necessary.
What? I'm being called in for a salary assessment? It's by Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth's order?
Heeeeeeee...!!

Tenma: You see, the Masked Wrestler Tenma Taro has debuted on television.
Jinxie: Next time, he'll be fighting with the Great Kyuubi.
Tenma: Hmm... but what should I do? I'll be fighting against myself.
Jinxie: Then, let's call Mr. Demon Attorney for the role as Great Kyuubi II!
Tenma: Oh, good idea! No one else would be more perfect for the job!
Ka-ka-kah! Attorney, now we shall be mortal enemies!

Filch: Actually, I've become the next village chief. Isn't it amazing? Heheh.
As the representing chief, I've sworn to protect this precious village of mine.
Well, if you're feeling grateful, I'll gladly accept donations for this village.
Officer: Hey, you there! Don't sneak into the mansion as you like!
Filch: Yipes! I've been found out! I'm outta heeeeeeere!

Chishio: I've thought of becoming a ceramics sculptor, but after seeing Athena working so hard...
I've decided to return to being a lawyer. So, I'm studying hard for that bar exam!
Kyah! Maybe someday, I'll get to prosecute a case against Athena!
Rei: Hmph. I'm busy with vigorous study right now, though it's not for the bar exam.
It's for the academy's entrance exam. This time, I'll really be giving my all to ace it, of course...
With a full 100 points, naturally.
Chishio: Together with Rei! And Juni! We'll push for our dreams foreveeeeeer!!

Miriam: Even after I picked the best cardboard box for those three... none of them tried them on!
Why!? Is it because I'm not going to be a lawyer, but a reporter for the court?
Though... thanks to the publicity from court, the future of the news club is secured.
Shishishishi! Alright, I should distribute my junior's new submission to the school newspaper.
"Ill-reputed Head Editor, Lamenting At Graduation Ceremony Practice, Sodden Cardboard Box"

Klavier: It was a single night's revival live... that passionate evening. I remember it even now.
There was the beautiful voice of that girl, head of the student council, as she departed from her high school years.
The day she becomes an official judge is one court session I would surely attend.
It may just be the coolest trial to ever exist. Let's rock!

Pearl: Just after I've finished sweeping through every corner of the room...
It immediately becomes messy once again.
If it keeps up like this...
Then I'll just have to clean up the attitudes of everyone in this office!
Once she's finished with her training, Mystic Maya will be coming over, after all!

Ohgawara: Fwahahahahaha! The dream into outer space has once again been revived!
The HAT-3 Program has officially been confirmed for launch!
Citizens of the nation! Pay close attention! This will be my, Ohgawara Uchu's, magnificent enterprise!
What is it!? Ah! Center Chief! The rocket's preparations are complete!
Leave everything to me, this center's Vice Chief, Ohgawara!

Ponco: I will be going to the Moon on the newest rocket!
If Athena and Mama Mari also come to the Moon, I will show them around!
Pyrenees Mountains? The quiet sea?
Will I be expecting two new visitors? Yay! Yay!
Ponta: I hope Lady Kaguya is doing well...
More than the Moon, I want to be beside Lady Kaguya!
Aaah! Lady Kaguya! Please use me once mooooore!

Hoshinari: Launch preparations are OK! 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
LIFTOFF!
I'm going to the Moon for sure this time! For Aoi's sake!
From those attorneys, I've learned to never give up!
...Then again, will I really be fine? There's no air in space, and it's extremely cold...
As I thought, I'm not going to be safe out there. Haaaaaaah...

Blackquill: No, I'm not a member of this agency. I came to look for someone to defend Sis, but...
No one's here. It looks like I've been waiting in vain.
...So, whose defense client might you be?
...I see. Your father's the defendant. Then, ask Athena to lead your defense...
Hmph. Well... I suppose I'll be meeting with your father in court later.

Edgeworth: Mr. Payne... look forward to your salary assessment next month.
Payne: Heeeeeeeee! My deepest apologiiiiiies!
Edgeworth: Since the resolution of Blackquill's case, the Prosecutor's Office has been seeing many more problems arising.
As I expected, the resolution of that case has only begun to thaw out further opportunities.
I'll need to ask that man for his assistance once more.
And I'll repay you the favor sometime, Wright.

She also appears in the DLC case at the aquarium for some reason(help?). She meets Athena for the first time and Nick again. She also recharges his Magatama.

I played the demo and from what I understand the Mood Matrix actually seems incredibly simple and I feel like it wouldn't offer much challenge. Without spoiling anything, are the Mood Matrix sequences very easy and if it does get more challenging, in what ways would it get challenging?

Thanks guys.

The Mood Matrix segments do get better, but... not really more challenging.

Unless someone already asked, how then, does the Mood Matrix do as a story-telling object? Is it a good thing for mysteries and revelations? Are there any "A-ha" moments with it? Etc.
