I don't have any of the manga so I dunno (which is why I'd never come across that snippet) - hopefully someone else can answer that!

I can vaguely see where they're coming from with Phoenix's fear of lighting after 3:1 but it isn't mentioned in 3:5 where you'd think it would have been as much of an issue for him as Edgeworth's earthquake phobia given the specific circumstances, so ...

Well since I don't know what happened in those two cases I'll just shut up and nod. Edgeworth has a thing with phobias, even though I shouldn't talk. I even hate going to the subway because I'm afraid of how small the platform is.. eh heh... I'm a mess aren't I?

I once had a friend who had a phobia about butter. Go figure.

Case script to the rescue!

Spoiler: Edgeworth's "fear of heights" in 1-5
Ema: Whoa! These are all case files!? They're stacked up to the ceiling! There's even a ladder...

Phoenix: Odd... I thought Edgeworth wasn't good with heights.

Ema: He must have someone get them for him.

Phoenix: (Strange... Why did I just picture Detective Gumshoe?)

Ema: He must study these case reports so closely...He's so cool!

Phoenix: You wouldn't say that if you saw him sweating bullets up on that ladder.

But to be honest, I don't put much stock in anything they added in 1-5. I think someone already pointed out that Edgeworth has no problem with heights anywhere else, even when crossing a giant gorge. The idea of him sweating on top of a short latter is a little extreme.

Aaaaaaand

Spoiler: "Phoenix's fear of heights in 3-5"
Maya: Wow! Look at this broken down old bridge, Nick!

Phoenix: Y-Yeah, and look at that big canyon below us.

Maya: Hey! There's a river down there! It looks like it's flowing real fast! ...What's wrong, Nick? You look like you've seen a ghost!

Phoenix: I-I'm just not very good with heights...

Maya: Oh... Hey! I've got it! Maybe you should face your fear and try hurling yourself off the edge? You know! One... Two... Three... Jump! It might be just what you need to get over your fear of heights!

Phoenix: Yeah, death is a real good way to overcome phobias alright.

(And then after the bridge)

Maya: Whoa, that bridge was shaking like jello in an earthquake.

Phoenix: ...

Maya: And at least half of the wood on that rickety bridge was rotting, I'd bet.

Phoenix: ...

Maya: Not to mention the last part only had like one board left on it!

Phoenix: ...

Maya: What's wrong with you? Your face is all green.

Phoenix: C-Can you not pick on me for a second? I'm still trying to get over the shock that we made it safely across that death trap.

Aaaaand Apollo. Not really spoilers, but I'll cut it anyway.

Spoiler:
I don't have the actual dialogue on hand, but when asked to climb a scaffold, Apollo tells Minuki he's not so good with heights. But he does manage to make it to the top, so he couldn't have been THAT scared.

I believe that with Croik's substantial evidence, we can safely believe that it is "an attorney thing." I think. I wonder what doctors are scared of ._.

That might have had something to do with it...

What I meant was he probably is fine in closed places, but not elevators specifically.

Yes I would agree that's generally the case although I'd suspect it extends to other situations sometimes depending on other factors.

I think Phoenix's fear of thunderstorms, if he is actually scared of them, isn't that strong- more of a 'I'd rather not' than 'NO WAY IN HELL AM I GOING OUT THERE' sort of thing. As for 3-5, it's probably Phoenix's Inner Sense of Justice over-riding his fear :D

Not to mention phobias don't always come in black and white, but often in various degrees of intensity. For instance, I'm phobic of bees, but I don't turn into a nearly gibbering useless wreck if one buzzes past me the way my Mom does.

So Edgey has his extreme reaction to earthquakes (which does probably go back mostly to the fact it was triggered by an intense trauma), whereas if Phoenix has a thunder phobia, it is probably a more vicarious conditioning- something like a bad storm when he was a kid, or a few too many scary movies that happen to have thunderstorms in them. Just enough to link Bad Things to the thunder, but not something triggered by personal experience. A lot of common phobias are brought on by vicarious conditioning- especially the common ones (heights, insects, spiders, snakes, etc,) Things that often in entertainment are paired with bad stuff ^_~
