I don't know if this thread already exists, but discussion of the (recently released?) Phoenix Wright manga anthology. I got it yesterday and I absolutely love it. My favorite stories were Turnabout Illusions, A Small Case in a Small Office, Turnabout Kitten (for Edgey making a funny), Turnabout? Food Fight, Ball Search Team, Head Out! and every single one of the 4komas. "The Greatest Mystery" in particular was four panels of dark, bitter brilliance. :godot:

I got it. It's not as good as I thought it would be, but it's all right. There are a few funny chapters but also a few duds, so it's really hit-or-miss. To me, at least.

It's pretty much sketch comedy with none of the drama of Phoenix Wright's actual cases, with the exception of one easily resolved case involving an Oldbag. Some of the humor also sails over the heads of those only familiar with the English language version of the series (like Maya's complaining about eating Miso).

Some interesting notes that I found.

* Godot is still alive in the Mangaverse.

* Phoenix is actually dating Iris.

* Pearl really really really dislikes this.

* Edgeworth has returned to Prosecution.

* Nick doesn't take that many cases as a Lawyer because he tends to attract totally insane clients. This is why he's constantly short for money.

* Grossberg is Denny Crane. His solution to Maya's problem of not having a waterfall is to have helicopters dump a flood on her in the middle of a crowded street (one of the few times Phoenix has lost a defense)

* Phoenix and Maya have a very odd habit of frequently picking up strange animals.

None of these are spoilers per say because they're just part of the background.

Well, none of the stories are supposed to be considered in any canon, so yeah.

Well it's Manga Canon.

Manga Canon is an Alternate Universe but its valid in its own peculiar little way.

There were a couple stories that involved Phoenix and Iris, but it wasn't clear that they were actually dating. In one, Phoenix was sneaking out of the office to go visit Iris in prison, in another they were laughing and talking about old times.

Easily interpreted as shippy, yes. And Pearl got bent out of shape both times, if I'm not mistaken. But I wouldn't say they were definitely dating.

There are a couple where it could be interpreed that way. But none where it is actually stated. There's one near the beginning (maybe it's even the very first one) that could be interpreted as :phoenix: X :edgeworth:.

The only thing close is that Phoenix gets lots of Psi-Locks when it asks about how he feels about Maya, but that could be interpreted several ways.

If it's like 3-5, then it's totally all right, because 3-5 was all about Nick x Maya :kissy:
Well, for me it was. At least it totally satisfied my fandom.
And if you PxE fans aren't disappointed with 3-5, it proves how awesome it is :)

Anyway, the manga is supposed to land in my mailbox on Monday.
I can't wait :)

Quick question before I buy it...I've only played the first game. Can any of you who own it tell me if it has any spoilers for the second, third, or even Apollo Justice? I'm so worried about spoilers that I consider almost any plot detail to be one.

If you're worried about spoilers, it does introduce certain characters that are not in game one and some details about those characters that, while not spoilers for the cases per se, might reveal the aftermath of the cases or ways that game one characters have changed.

Hmmm, the only thing stopping me from buying it are the less than stellar reviews and spoilers...how can I possibly find out how spoilerish it is without knowing any plot details...

Ok, this has been bugging me for awhile. What is all this about Godot dying? He DIDN'T die. I don't recall him being sentenced to death row in the game, and the only time he 'died' was when he was in the coma. And if he didn't do that, why would he still be wearing the mask-thing?

Sorry, that's been bugging me. (And sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've had no idea what people were talking about when they said he died or something)

Can I order the casebook at any bookstores? I plan to order mine at the mall's Coles if I can, but I don't exactly know what I'll do if the only way I can order it now is my the internet... :yuusaku:

It's assumed that because Godot appears in the picture beside Misty and Mia (in the ending of T&T), he is dead.

I like the idea of Godot dying, to be finally together with Mia.
He was already in a pretty bad state, and now he doesn't have anything left in the world to live for.

I had bought volume 1 today, on this miserable day. It's quite a thick book, so it'll take me awhile to read.

Spoiler:
The first three 'cases' weren't all that great. Phoenix wondering why he became a lawyer was very good for an introduction to the manga, but Edgeworth's personality in it was just unfitting of him. Otherwise it was good. The case of the repoter who was falsely accused had the worst cliff hanger I had ever seen in my life, so obviously I wasn't very fond of it.

And the Ian and Wendolyn case, it was all funny but got confusing until they got to the point where Ian left Pearl's body, then it continued to be more confusing after that. >_> Also I'm left wondering why Maya and Pearl bothered to channel them, it's like they did it randomly just because they felt like it.

I wonder... when they released it in 2006, were they considering it canon?
I know, eventually it turned out that it can't be canon because of Apollo Justice, but initially...?
Obviously, if the series ended with 3-5, little stand-alone mangas like this would be great for continuing the story, as they don't tell the story of Phoenix like the games, but show only small chapters.

But eventually they decided to make a 4th game, and it's hard to continue a bunch of stand-alone comics with a game, so they rather ignored it... right?

I adore the one chapter when Phoenix is sick and his past image shows up, along w/ Mia's. ^w^ So cute~

And I am in no way a Phoenix/Maya shipper, but who else thought the chapter w/ Nick talking about his reason as a lawyer is to make people smile and stuff...(the one w/ the pictures of Adrian and such in the background...)

Needless to say, I HATED HATED HATED the chapter w/ Nick "sneaking off to see Iris" (I convinced myself he wasn't ;D)

But anyway, you must understand that this is just a step above doujinshi. Many artists contributed their own stories and art to the book, so their views on the game are different. :kyouya:

Personally I'm looking forward to the Edgeworth edition. That one is going to be interesting.

Most of them were pretty cute / interesting, but there were a few odd ones... I didn't really like the reporter one or the one with Oldbag's grandma...

Lol the "sneaks off to see Iris" is one of my favorites!

It is also by far the most shippish chapter, which you can interpret either as PxI or PxM. Just like 3-5.

I'm, thinking about buying this, but I don't know where. Or maybe my searches are bad (my searches are REALLY terrible). So if someone could link me to a place where I could buy it...
And PHoenix loses a case? Other than 2-4 and 4-4? Cause if PHoenix loses, I'm not buying it. Period.

A caveat: the entire manga isn't structured like the games; instead it's mostly a collection of fancomics about some stories about some small Phoenix adventures. There aren't really cases.

I got the casebook about one or two weeks ago, and my opinion is... it's cute and a sort of hit-and-miss. Some just weren't good... I didn't like the artist who drew with the cat teeth or whatever. That's the only one I really didn't like.

I thought some were adorable... am I the only one who liked the one where Maya takes a cat home and Phoenix looks all over for a owner? I though the art was good and the story was funny, even though Phoenix was being unnessescairly mean. I also liked the one with Oldbag's grandmother a lot, as well as others I can't remember. XD

So, yeah. Wasn't horrible, wasn't great, but it was in the middle. *noddu noddu*

I liked this book a lot. I can't wait for the next one.

Also, it's NOT canon. Not even "manga canon". They're all officially-published doujinshi that were made by guest artists and Capcom had nothing to do with them. And none of the comics have anything to do with each other, since they're all done by a different person. So, it's not really anything canon or anything Capcom did, it's just a collection of stories done by Ace Attorney fans.

Well, the fact that it's dubbed "official" on the front and back covers is kinda misleading, as it isn't the same manga as the official one in Japan...this casebook is more of a collection of fan made comics essentially? Is that correct? Cause I just found that out today when I was planning on buying it and it bummed me out.

Does anyone know if the real japanese ones will be translated and brought over to USA/Canada? I know there are fan translated ones online...but I'd like to collect the actual physical manga if possible...so does anyone know anything about that? Thanks!
