And because I LOVED the goddamn pic so much, here's how I'm currently doing with it. =D The line art correction should be done soon, and after that, it's colorin' time, babeh.

Spoiler: Saving space

I'm trying out a new cleanup technique I thought of to get the clean line base, and so far it's been working out rather well. It'll take some retouching in some areas after I'm done with the complete line set, but that's easily solvable. =D

It's a silly technique I just thought of today. It's a bit tedious, because it involves tracing and retracing some things LOTS of times, but so far has allowed me for vector-quality crisp lines, and the ability to resize the drawing and the line art without suffering quality loss. =D

Trust me, you're not incompetent. Again, it's just a matter of trying stuff randomly. I wouldn't know half the stuff I know about Photoshop if I hadn't stopped to try all the weird shit I've been doing since Photoshop 5.5 (and 7.0 afterward). You don't even need to have ability (I myself have NONE); just a bit of patience and a willingness to throw the house out the window trying stuff you haven't seen. ;-)

Might benefit from different eyelining. The AA chars [or Phoenix, anyway] only ever have white on the bottom line of the eyes. Part of the char design style.
But of course whether it's the same for this pic depends on the art style in the shading, I guess.

A friend of mine said a good idea to shade is to take the base color, and then subtract 30 from everything. I think it works pretty well.

I'm not sure if what you're using has it, but the dodge/burn tool helps, I think. But then, that's just for the color...
