The only reason this pairing even exists is all thanks to the twist in 1/4 where you find out they were in the same class, and that whole story with Edgeworth defending Phoenix. This is a perfect setup for a pairing, but as we all know, fangirls won't stop at a simple picture like young Edgeworth comforting Phoenix, or them just holding hands. No. Yaoi fangirls have to go all the way. Oh, you silly, eccentric fangirls. It can be hard to find sane ones. >_>

Iris and that relationship is strongly implied to be an irrelevant part of Phoenix's bad pre-Mia past, before Mia rescued him from Dahlia and sent him on positive growth (law school, GS1-3) It's no accident it was a flashback to pre-Mia. Iris is the opposite of Edgeworth and Maya and the same problems which sank Phoenix/Iris in 3-1 are precisely the positive things Phoenix since gained from his relationships with Edgeworth and Maya, regardless of whether you see romance with either or them. [So no wonder Iris isn't very popular.]
Maya and Edgeworth reciprocated Phoenix's belief in them by repeatedly helping him, sacrificing themselves for him and following empty words with genuine actions. Iris did not. Iris betrayed Phoenix where Maya did not and it's the relationship with Maya he can and does believe in in 3-5's trial to finally defeat Dahlia, not Iris. Repeated outside lies and turmoil never sink the Phoenix-Maya partnership, but just one ruined Phoenix-Iris. Before I'm tempted to go off on a Phoenix/Maya tangent, Edgeworth's portrayal in the series also implies Iris is irrelevant to Phoenix's future:
After revelation Edgeworth was 'not a murderer' in 1-4, this triggered the self-imposed metaphoric 'death' and redemption of Edgeworth's actual Demon Prosecutor crimes in JFA, aka deliberately concealing the truth and allowing lies and murderers to prevail, (sound familiar?) which was considered by the writers as required before he was able to be canonly called Phoenix's 'partner' [in law/friendship if we don't ship them.]
A transformation Iris never undergoes during the 5 years since 3-1 or even shows any comprehension of needing by the end, so unlike Edgeworth, she just goes to jail, the 'truth' being considered an extremely important virtue in this series. Arguments we should go easy on her due to poor role models or background [Morgan/von Karma] and love for a close relative [sister/father] weren't good enough excuses to the writers for Edgeworth, so they aren't good enough excuses for Iris either.
In other words, the very reasons we like and admire Phoenix's relationships with Edgeworth and Maya [and Edgeworth and Maya themselves] are the very failings of the Phoenix/Iris relationship and their absence is what destroyed it in the first place. Oh and Phoenix just 'happened' to get those two positive relationships as a direct result of Mia saving him from Dahlia and Iris in 3-1. [Mia effectively 'gave' him Maya the way her self-professed rival Dahlia 'gave' him Iris, and Mia convinces him signing up to law school IS the way to save Edgeworth after he gives up on 'Dollie' in 3-1.] Iris is Dahlia's own Branch Family counterpart to Maya who submits to her evil ghost sister instead of channelling helpful ghost Mia and betrays Phoenix instead of being loyal to him. And she has the flawed lie and crime obscuring past of Edgeworth's Demon Prosecutor days but never is inspired to undergo redemption to overcome her demons [LOL literal] in the way that made Edgeworth a worthy character and partner to Phoenix in the eyes of the writers themselves.
In fact it's as much as implied Phoenix simply does not need Iris, because he has since gained genuine relationships with Maya and Edgeworth now which conspicuously lack the actual failings which ruined their 'relationship' 5 years ago. That's why the happy end portrait has them with Phoenix, and Iris is in jail. It's a tragic tale, but Diego's story was tragic too.
Hmm, this isn't going to be very popular with some people, but I'm just explaining an explanation why many people have strong distaste for this pairing, anyone agree?

Capcom has never supported P/E or any other pairings other than Ron/Dessie and to a lesser extent Gumshoe/Maggey (we know he really likes her, and she gets really pissed at him when she feels he's not doing everything he can to help her. There are many points in the games where you can interpret what character's say to imply a pairing. I now 2-4 and Maya's rescue is a big example of that because it can imply the P/E, P/M, and M/M all at once if you choose to look at it in any of those ways.
I personally don't have too many pairings I actually hate because I like to give stuff a chance. A very good fic can convert people to liking something.
The only pairings that really creep me out and I would not want to read or look at pics for are anything involving Pearl or any other really young character.

I was never happy with that decision for that contest to change to that pairing. Just goes to show you that vocal fans can get what ever they want. It's not like those contests are official or Capcom sanctioned.
At best you could argue that P/I is canon in the past, but many fans don't see it that way.

Though you claim in your previous explanation that because of the failure of Phoenix/Iris as a pairing, the community appreciated P/E + P/M much more but surely those fans existed well before T+T I wouldn't put ALL the blame on Iris.

And I agree with most of this. except I'll say that P/E has plenty of canon basis, but this has, what one line which could be differently interpreted?
