I remembered it as her complaining at Phoenix after Adrian left, but she actually starts yelling at him about 'who is this woman?' in front of Adrian. Which explains why she's so embarrassed and trying to cover up.

Anyway, having watched the 'Pearls has the wrong idea about us' scene again, Maya sure does have a lot of 'ummmm's and never says anything that would pour cold water on romance between them or even deny it, only tries to explain about how Pearl has unreasonable expectations in terms of romance due to the Kurain situation etc. And it certainly doesn't explain away Dr Grey's impressions, either. Basically all the scene tells us is a) Pearl's expectations of perfect romance are unreasonable b)implies they're not actively involved in a romantic relationship at this point in time, which we would not have expected anyway, and it's pretty exceptional that the writers thought they'd built up enough between them to even require such a scene, which of course was needed for the whole 3-5 plot (since Phoenix would not be conflictedly running after the mystery of some ex-girlfriend if he was in a relationship with Maya without looking really bad.) Of course, in the very next case he gets attracted to Maya in the maid costume (and freaks out slightly over it. It's like he takes her for granted in their mundane routine but as soon as he sees her outside the box...) That argument people like to throw around that they can only ever see each other as 'siblings' or 'cousins', I just can't see as correct.

Hey, I just had a very random thought, in regard to Phoenix and Iris over Phoenix and Maya. I'm just curious, what do you think made some people think Iris was a better choice for Phoenix?
What did Iris ever give Phoenix, other than heartbreak, betrayal, and guilt
Phoenix and Maya, on the other hand, they owe each other so much. Maya owes Phoenix her life (four times!), burgers, helping to avenge Mia, and being there most of the time when he needs it. Phoenix likewise owes some of his successful cases to Maya as well, and has been there for Maya many times. They've both been together for three years(unfortunately, not in a romantic sense) and share a kind of connection.
...And there's my ten cents.

-Phoenix was willing to risk anything to save Maya's life.
-Maya has always been devoted to Phoenix and cares about him greatly. Example? The drawing from 2-4. It was of Phoenix on the shell card. She trusted him and drew him to keep her mind off of things, as she said.
-Maya even risked HERSELF to help Phoenix in 1-4 when she retrieved the bullet.
-Phoenix and Maya met in a situation where he had the CHOICE to save her. He decided to try and save her. He was successful.
Those are some reasons that show Phoenix and Maya really care for each other. That's just my opinion.

Now the canon gives us a huge amount of evidence of how well Phoenix and Maya work as partners and complement each other and bring out the best in each other (Phoenix mopes without her and can't even take cases, it's Phoenix and the fact that he values her which motivates Maya to actually finish her spirit medium training after the trauma of game 1 and probably to think she can handle becoming Kurain Master), they can handle small issues without problems (see the urn, Pearl freaks out over 'betrayal' but Phoenix and Maya handle it like adults in a functional relationship), they care so much they will even risk their lives for each other (Maya: 2-4, Phoenix: 3-5) there's evidence even that Phoenix and Edgeworth can complement each other and bring out the best in each other (1-5, 2-4, 3-5... though Edgeworth is more on a professional level of finding the truth, Maya is more the emotional support) but in stark contrast what do we get for Iris?
I mean, "can I have it back now, please?" to try and get the bottle back for 6 months when Phoenix's LIFE is at risk is practically laughable. It's like the writers deliberately made the relationship sound so pathetic that it was a joke. If they can't work together over such an issue, is there really much hope that they can have a long-term viable relationship once the initial euphoria wears off? And unlike Phoenix, who is more mature now, Iris is in this regard totally unchanged from that time, just like Godot was stuck in the past (but with the excuse of a coma) so in 3-5 she still can't warn him. And we never get any evidence that they can work together in some functional way. (Oh yeah, forget the betrayal and the fact that Iris wouldn't risk anything meaningful to save him)
All we get in 3-5 is continuous evidence that Maya is the main priority in Phoenix's life. Not just trying to run across the burning bridge, but even when he's supposedly defending Iris, once Maya is at threat he forgets about Iris totally and clings to nothing but Maya's innocence in a direct parallel of 3-1 except this time it's Maya [not Iris, [even though it's Iris on trial and in danger and he's supposedly 'defending Iris'] who he clings to with 'irrational' belief. I don't think Phoenix held out any feelings, he was just wanting answers over such a traumatic experience for which he didn't have proper closure, but if he did have any it's pretty clear that when it comes down to it, his priority lies with Maya way before Iris.

In terms of appearance/physical beauty, Iris is definitely pretty, but I find it the 'sickening sweet' kind of pretty, much like the entire Phoenix/Iris relationship. She's pretty. She makes magically delicious omelettes. She probably made that
So what? Is there anything at all that Phoenix and Iris would actually talk about? Dahlia would probably be an avoided topic, as well as the entire 3-5 incident. What are their interests? What do they have in common? What's Iris's favorite food? From what I see, Iris is just going to blindly agree to anything Phoenix says, to be a perfect person(yeah, I'm copying from your story icer, sue me. :P) for Phoenix. Besides, if someone lied to you for six months saying that they were the person that you thought you loved, would you really want to love them again? (Now this part is pretty much personal opinion, but I think there's too much of the past weighing both of them down.) Whenever she cried, I rolled my eyes with disbelief.
I think if Phoenix and Iris got back together at the end of 3-5, that would be a really cliche move. Not just the kind you can ignore, but an entire sappy romance novel pulled straight out of nowhere, a Mary Sue-ish conclusion.
As for Phoenix/Maya...
Actually, screw that. Everyone else already said it. There's a crapload of evidence supporting that and Pearl supports them too.

The Iris debates seem to be starting up again recently. I wonder why? Someone revived the prehistoric thread. I only hope this one doesn't end up like 'exjumbo' (who has taken more than 3 days to reply. I'll be out of debate mode if he makes me stall too long :/ I hope it's because he's having trouble rebutting. The comment someone else left is irritating me)
Personally I'm getting sick of debating Iris. I'd rather use my time to convince the Edgeworth supporters that this pairing is an entirely possible interpretation of canon, not just some stupid Pearlish delusion even if they choose to go with Edgeworth instead :( But the opportunity never really presents. *sigh* Shipping Is Serious Business...

Now, the Internet... hey it's kind of a miracle they haven't replaced it with something, yet, or made greater attempts at exploitation and control. It's kind of an unprecedented development in the history of humanity, it's not like TV or the phone system because it's interactive, carries too many different types of media, and is umm the convergence of both personal communications and 'traditional media forms', (not to mention, can support other business functions..) so exactly when or what is Web 3.0 and how will it differ?... Personally, what I want is:
Phoenix gets his badge back, Maya comes back as his assistant, Apollo meets Maya and Older!Pearl for a short time. Optional: Maya/Pearl can channel Mia to meet Apollo. XD
Phoenix and Maya leave the country like Edgeworth. Apollo and Trucy stay behind, defend, blah.
Therefore, we get a glimpse of the past, etc, and effectively kick Phoenix out of the spotlight while giving a bit of fanservice, leaving Apollo and Trucy to their own story.
And of course, this is all in my head-canon.

That's why I prefer the 'leave to live at Kurain' for leaving because it has more hope of writers making it happen. (Actually I wish Phoenix would just become a lawyer and 'leave' by staying offscreen at Wright and Co. and Apollo can open his own office in the next district which has the same court.)
