[/quote]Oh i don't think he's indiscriminating - far from it. I'd say he's too discriminating, in fact. I think what he's looking for is so unlikely outside of a tiny circle of people that I think the level of emotional support would outweight the issue of genitalia. I'm probably not explaining this very well as I'm way out of practice in lit crit. He did have a childhood of happiness but his sexual development years were in a wilderness. I can't help but wonder if as a result what he yearns for most is the emotional security of his childhood and for that he needs someone who understands without being told.
I think Franziska yearns for the same thing because she knows how damn important clinging in to that childhood was for Miles and she wants it without having ever experienced it for herself (which makes her actually slightly less messed up in the head I suspect)! That's why she sometimes hates him I think.
I don't actually see Edgeworth and Gumshoe as a couple at all, even a casual shag, to be honest. I think Gumshoe totally hero-worships Edgeworth and I just don't think Edgeworth would go there as a result because for me it wouldn't sit well with his moral principles and I think would be too excruciating for him in terms of having someone around that thinks he's perfect. Edgeworth has spent so many years hating himself that I think someone like that would turn him off completely. (No offence to any Gumshoe/Edgeworth shippers here mind you - we all have our own interpretations which is what makes it fun). To be honest I kind of imagine Gumshoe like Columbo and keep waiting for him to talk about "Mrs Gumshoe"

[/quote]Honestly I can't put my finger on it exactly although his reaction to April May was what made me first think "Dude!". Is he scared of bouncy breasts? I dunno. Maybe you're right actually on reflection - I need to play more of the games I think and pay more attention to his interactions wity Mia and Maya in particular. Or write some PW fanfic and see where the characters lead me (not that I've written fiction of any kind for over a decade but damn there are some stunningly good ones on these forums that are making me want to pick up my pen again (except that these days it's a keyboard).

I don't think it was ever Capcom's intention to make Phoenix seem gay (his reaction to April, as you mentioned, was apparently very different in the original script, according to the guidebooks). But I think he definately comes off as awkward around women sometimes. Mia came off as really hitting on him in case 1 (at least, as I saw it) but a month later Phoenix still hadn't accepted her invitation. I mean, come ON, it's MIA. And he didn't jump on that oppertunity?

I didn't find this forum till I'd got through JFA and started on AA ('fraid I got 'em in the wrong order and played a bit of 2 then a bit of 1 then went back to 2 - it was a bit of a mess).
And even in my little vacuum of non-suggestibility I was starting to squint sideways at the Miles/Phoenix relationship and by the end of 2:4 I think the expression "Oh Get a room you two" may have been heard in my living room - heh!
I am quite sure Capcom weren't intending to suggest any nortiness at all but damn they didn't do a very good job of it.
I have a couple of notions for some fanfic and I'll see what I can come up with in a stream of consciousness kind of way, but I doubt it'll rival some of the excellent stuff I've seen here and elsewhere (including your own). And sadly I'm not very good at the PRON.

I was actually convinced by the end of the first trial that Phoenix had a thing for Mia. And then Edgeworth stepped into the picture and that idea flew right out the window and slammed into the pavement below.
But when I was under that impression, I always thought Phoenix's "lack of interest" was really his nerves; that he just never scourged together the bravery required to ask a woman like Mia Fey out before it was too late. Throw in her status as his mentor, and I can see Nick not wanting to complicate things more than necessary.

Okay she didn't wink but she might as well have! I don't see anything remotely romantic between after she dies, but for a second there it totally sounded like she was hitting on him. And Phoenix was just like, "Durrrrrrr."
I'm going to pretend that his memories of how he became a lawyer (Edgey <3) were sooooo strong they distracted him even from Mia's heaving bossom.

...Seriously, though, my personal philosophy is that sexuality isn't easily labelled and there are exceptions to every rule. So Edgey can tap whoever he feels like. Heck, with his people skills the way they are, I could even see him being asexual and not wanting to touch icky humans at all.

That's exactly the way I view it, as well. Even more so with edgeworth, being as he's so uptight when his status with the lady's is mentioned (or anything similar of that matter) and unemotional. Actually, I think you merely stated something that would make Edgeworth more likely to be gay. I certainly am hesitant to say something when it comes to my status with women. I try to just say, "I don't have a girlfriend" or I just change the subject.
