It's a really difficult call for me anyway; both Gumshoe and Ema are some of my favorite characters out of the entire Ace Attorney series. I think I must have a secret detective love or something XD I adore what both of them bring to the games, and think their complementary personalities are great.

Sure Ema's helpful & all... but with a bitchy attitude like she has in AJ, it makes my opinion on her drop. Plus - she's not just as loveable & stupid like good ole Gummy is. Plus - whenever Phoenix is in need of desperate help (ie: about to get his ass handed to him in a fight), Gumshoe comes in to save the day

I didn't get the sense that Ema was supposed to be smart - just passionate about science. She failed the forensic scientist qualification test, didn't she? She says something along those lines in 4-2. But it's also possible, as you suggested, that she's just lazy and that's why she failed the test :P Either way, again, she's either dumb or lazy...I was just inclined towards "dumb" because I figured she'd study hard for the forensics test that she cared so much about, but I guess she's also lazy because she doesn't seem to want to study and re-take it at the time of AJ. I think she's a frustrating character because she's content just to sit and be discontent while taking it out on everyone around her.

For Gumshoe it’s the somewhat endearing obliviousness, he tries hard and is very passionate about his work, which makes him a likable goof. Ema’s reasons aren’t as obvious, I don’t think it’s because she’s dumb or lazy, but rather because she suffers from a severe lack of motivation:
4-2 hints as to why she failed her forensics exam (one of the conversation topics, decline to help with the footprint molds and present the broken lamp)—apparently she’s really clumsy and ‘lacks talent’. Forensics work is more than just book knowledge; you have to be adept at lab procedures, being a klutz certainly doesn’t help much in that regard. Studying hard won’t help one become, for the lack of a better term, un-clumsy.
Just plain sucking at something you’re really passionate about has to be a real downer, which kind of explains her irate personality. Being thoroughly demotivated means Ema probably chooses the most obvious solutions to her cases just to get them over with. Whereas putting in a little extra effort (which is what Apollo does) would rule out the obvious primary suspects, as is the case with Wocky, Machi and Vera.

The reason I prefer Ema if it were real life is because I think she might be more competent than the poor detective. Sorry, that's how I feel about it.

Cause constantly PMSing Skye isn't as fun as easily riled up Gumshoe.
And the guy saves Phoenix's ass twice from physical harm, not to mention the times he gets the critical evidence to save the day: I wanna see wannabe scientific Ema Skye do that. :/ (Actually, she would be pretty cool in my book if she did do something cool like that)

I'm glad that they went in a completely new direction with the recurring detective character in Apollo Justice, because if Ema was just a Gumshoe clone, she wouldn't be able to escape Gumshoe's shadow.
