If we're all going by the "TAKE THAT" voice clip and assuming he's british by the inflection he speaks with, personally I feel that his "accent" is more snooty than anything.

Like, privileged-child-who-grew-up-in-connecticut-and-was-part-of-the-yacht-club, snooty.

There's no... Cohesive way to describe it other than that. He just sounds like an arrogant prick. AND IF YOU ARE ALL INSINUATING THAT THE BRITISH ARE ARROGANT PRICKS WELL

some of you would be right, haw haw

His 'Take That!' sounds English to me, and to a lesser extent his 'Objection!'. His 'Hold It!' doesn't, tho.

Well, I thought that Gregory Edgeworth sounded like a British name, so I assumed that Edgey sounded a bit British because of him.

Or this whole thing could be explained by him watching Austin Powers with Larry in 4th grade and getting hooked.

I never really pinned the title of "British" onto him, but I can somewhat see where it comes from. Ergo, His Accent, and especially his attire point towards it. But at the same time, this does take place in the future. These things COULD be common at the time.

*sighs happily as she fancifully imagines that future* Yes, what a wonderful world that would be. Btw, it doesn't need to be capitalized. It's just an adverb. It means therefore. As in:
The woman got in a car accident, therefore, she got hurt.

Replace with egro:
The woman got in a car accident, ergo, she got hurt.

I do say "ergo" every now and again... erm does that mean or not mean anything here in the circumstances? :p

And not every British man is gay now, though the accent does go down pretty well when I'm over in the US ;)

As for the question at hand, I always took Edgeworth to be American but with a refined upbringing of the von Karmas...

Actually, I've always imagined him to be Irish, albeit probably of Protestant descent.

Edgeworth is an old Anglo-Irish name and many of the famous Edgeworths were Irish (eg., Francis Edgeworth, Henry and Kenneth Edgeworth). There is also a town close to where I live called Edgeworthstown.

Ergo is Latin, not British. It's more something lawyer-ish than British.

I say ergo every so often, just 'cause I like the phrase and context to use it. One of my old teachers used to use it a lot. Perhaps I picked it up from him.

Anyway, back on topic. I always imagined Edgy to be English, I have a weakness for English guys (which is weird here in England as everyone seems to like the foreign guys) and some of his traits are seemingly so; his objection being the main piece of evidence. Although I did think he was supposed to be American just because of his background in the game. It also doesn't say otherwise.

I'm just going to carry on imagining... :edgy:

Personally, I believed Edgey to be American, With a slight canadian accent xD

It sounds normally american accent enough, 'til his weird Take that! kinda reminds me of the canadians who speak similarily to americans, but have a slight more englishesque accent to it.

Because he IIIS XD

Seriously, his voice is so obviously British. I AM BRITISH. I CAN RECOGNISE MY OWN ACCENT. It's so different from everyone else's 'Take that!' and 'Objection!'.

In fact, as soon as I heard his 'Objection!' the first thing I said to my friend after playing the game was, 'OMG EDGEY IS BRITISH! (and gay)' XD

It's just a load of fans having fun, seriously. If fans want to see him as a British bishie with tea and a cravat then let them. But in this case, he really IS British.

Or at least, Capcom randomly decided to give him the only British voice-actor, it seems. If he was raised in America and Germany he wouldn't really have a British accent, unless Capcom never thought fans would take it seriously, or if he actually lived in England for every other part of his life.

I don't really consider 'Ergo' a British word, just a practiculary fancy one. Makes me think of when I said "Alas" today and my friend thought I said something Irish. xD

the only think that would make me think he ISN'T British would be that he grew up in America/Germany with the vonkarmas. Gregory Edgeworth AND miles Edgeworth both sound like British names to me, but he would have a German accent...UNLESS both Gregory and his mother were British and, growing up around them up until the 4th grade, he picked it up from them. That's the main reason people even have accents- They pick it up from what they hear.

Hnn... I don't like using 'Ergo' as proof that Edgey is British or not simply because Wright also uses it on (from what I recall) at least one occasion in the first game. Like others have stated, it's just a fanciful word, anyone can use ergo and they needn't be British.

Personally, I think one of Edgeworth's parents was British - most likely his dad, but he was brought up in the US when he was a child until a certain incident happened, after which VK took him in and he was schooled in some top law school in the UK XD

By the way--for those of you saying "it's his accent":

My Texan uncle married a woman from England many, many years ago--they remain happily so. Interestingly enough, to those of us back home he now sounds somewhat English and to her family she now sounds somewhat American.

Accent is a subjective, fluid thing and can prove next to nothing, for the most part. With enough exposure and/or imitation, you can sound however you please.

It would certainly explain why he's always flying off to Europe and never anywhere else like Canada or Mexico or Djibouti (despite its having a wonderful, wonderful name). /silly

I imagined Miles as being born in America, but his father having been born in some part of England. Also, the fact that Manfred brought him over to Europe and such, well -- I figured of course it'd make an impact on his language, and behavioral habits.

It's obvious why he's British, he is miserable pretty much all the time. Plus his humour consists of cynicism and cheesy puns (vintage whine anyone?).
Edgeworth's voice sounds English in the middle class way to me, I also think Phoenix sounds a bit British too for some reason.

I get distinctly British vibes from Edge. Maybe it's the cravat...?? I'm from England so maybe it's just that I'm projecting stuff...

Also, his father was named 'Gregory', was he not? It sounds like a pretty Brit name to me! :karma:

What? No, no, this was the thread I had in mind. tsukixkumori said that she didn't like the thought of Edgeworth being British.

Kind of like in 1-5, y'know?

:udgy: : I don't think I like your attitude.
:jake: : I don't think I like your beard, but you don't see me complaining. [something like that]

On-topic, if the accent returns for his "that's it!" voiceclip in GK (the localized version), I think it's pretty safe to say that he's British.

Meh, I'm pretty sure since Edgey's character is designed to be a sort of sophisticated, tea-drinking, gentleman, a British accent just seems to fit his character because it's a stereotype.

It's about as logical as, why do Greek and Roman characters in movies have British accents?

Because a British accent is stereotyped as being sophisticated, regal and elegant-sounding.

Guys, it is pretty obvious from the British voice actor, the choice of dress, the tea, and the homosexuality, that Edgey is pretty British. I mean, if Edgey isn't British, then nobody is. Not even Liquid Snake.

And I know that Liquid is British, ergo, Edgey must be British.
