Artistic sepia license. Maybe it's evening,and that orangeish shine of light in the background is casting its glow on her. Her robe also seems to be more revealing than usual. Maybe she got a new one as she recently became Kurain Master, which is a different colour.

Maya's stressed out about becoming Master throughout most of T&T. But however worried she is about the responsibility at 19, she knows that there's no way she can pawn that off on her 9-year-old cousin. Besides, Pearl is a member of the branch family, and I doubt the villagers of Kurain would take kindly to a member of the main family abdicating to a member of the branch family for no reason other than personal desire. And with Pearl at such a tender age, how do we know that she won't someday yearn for a life outside Kurain? Maya's too selfless to have ignored that possibility.
As a side note, I'd actually lose some respect for Maya if she passed the mantle of Master on to Pearl, because I see Maya's readiness to accept a role that she's not completely confident about as an impressive strength, and definitely something that she has over Mia.
That said, I'm not entirely convinced by Phoenix/Maya shipping, but I can see it working much easier than I can be any other PW pairing working (can't comment on AJ, since I haven't played it). You never know, though - maybe I'll change my mind upon replaying a few cases ;)

Yeah. Everyone respects Mia, and thinks Maya's 'irresponsible' (her detractors). But Mia just dumped the position on Maya by default. It can be framed negatively as well as selflessly. Mia had good/selfless intentions, but I think she also had selfish/ambitious ones. It wasn't ever even Maya's choice. Maya was practically BORN into a difficult position all constructed solely by others...
Heck, having it dumped on her, probably means Maya's even less likely to dump the position on little Pearl in similar manner.

For the last reason, yes, everyone thinks that being Master means you're like the mayor of the village who has to write paperwork and make announcements and stuff, and be a complete nun who can never leave the village again in her life. But seeing as when Misty was Master, she already had 2 daughters, and Morgan, the elder sibling to Misty, had a jeweler husband and fraternal twin daughters, maybe it's actually POSSIBLE for Maya to lead a normal social life, even if she was the Master.thin
And who here thinks that Mia would have succedded the title had 1-2 not happened?

dude, exactly how many of the games have you played? At GS1, it would still be 5 years before Misty's death in abstentia, and Maya was 19 in GS3. Learn to think before you type.

The game implies pretty explicitly that Mia abdicated to Maya when she 'left the mountain' to pursue law. So no, the game implies Maya would be Master even if Mia lived. Though Mia could probably provide legal advice etc. to Maya. 1-2 really did seem to push the idea Mia abdiucated permanantly,I suppose it's not impossible she may have returned to be Master say if Maya begged her to, but Mia died so it's a non-issue anyway.

Yeah, it's never ever implied the Master has to stay fulltime in Kurain, actually the opposite is explicitly implied by 3-5 credits. And when Misty was ruining Kurain in court in the Incident, she was hardly in the village now was she.
