But the sprites themselves don't have legs. You'd see a gap between the person and the bottom of the screen, surely?

Er, MMF2 supports layers, etc. But all of that is irrelevant. Sprites will not be positioned the right way for this to work. The only way to do it, would be to carefully edit the bench sprite.
