Personally I like good old fashioned fingerprint (or toe) dusting. Even if you look fairly silly blowing on your DS...its all in the same of science
But there's the X-ray scanner thing, metal detector, foot print analysis, the plain old examine closer button, Little Thief, luminol, and the poison spray...all quite fun. Maybe I'm missing out some... I suppose Missile could kinda count but you don't really use him. And would you count checking video footage? it feels sorta scientific.
Alternatively, what forensic tasks would you like to see added in GS5? I think it'd be neat if they added in DNA checks from hair samples you could find at the crime scenes.

Hair DNA check might be fun, but that would sort of ruin any "I am not actually this person" plot they might think of creating. And I would like, perhaps, a proper Ballistic Markings mini-game to do. They talked about them in various cases, but I want to do a mini-game where I can test fire a gun while shouting "FIRE IN THE HOLE!!" or similar and compare the markings.

It was the same with the metal detector. However, with that I found what I was looking for really quickly, so I never got a good chance to look around. I don't think I took the opportunity to do so on my replays either...

the hair thing wouldn't have to spoil a character twist, just prove when a witness claims not to have been at the crime scene instead of relying on matchstick boxes

No, no the X-Ray Scanner was used in 4-4 to find out what was written in letters without opening them.
...would this still be a case of violating the privacy of what is written in letters, only to be read by the people who receive the letter?

Comparing a photo of a car to sample photos to determine its make might be kind of boring. Forensics on the body would be too gross. They might have more things involving recreating the angle of a shot.

As for the rest, well, they all were good but only during the first time, then they get too repetitive. Out off all of those, I'd say the most useful was the Luminol, but the bug sweeper/metal detector mechanics from 2-4 and 3-5 are the most fun in my opinion, because of all the funny extra dialog that it provides.

Well next game is meant to be darker, they might try and go there.
Though really I think it's getting TOO CSI for Phoenix or Apollo, remember proper scientists most cases give you reports with this information. In fact it's solely just Ema in her unofficial little investigations that warrant these little things.
And if it means not having Ema present in GS5 I'll gladly sacrifice scientific sections.

I agree that they shouldn't get really anymore complicated than they are now, because there's really no reason for lawyers to be doing this stuff. However, I DO like Ema, and I would be glad to see her back, which means there are ways of doing this again.
I personally like the idea of a new detective and having Ema work in forensics. So you can go to the forensics lab and have her test evidence for things. I think it would be cool and would enable some different gameplay.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

But I've seen small-practice attorneys inspect mold in landlord-tenant disputes and legal interns take pictures of roads for accident lawsuits. Corporate attorneys often double as safety managers and look at the scenes of workplace accidents to determine fault or figure out what needs to be done to prevent future mishaps.

Yes. While admittedly this isn't very realistic to murder cases, in most non-violent legal cases the attorney often goes to the location in question to gain more knowledge of the problem and the case. (And D.A.s visit crime scenes all the time, they just don't do the actual investigating.) I feel like the lawyers doing some unofficial snooping around is less of a stretch than them doing anything more extreme forensics-wise than they have in previous games (emphasis on anything more extreme, because as I said right now it's fine). I think the lawyer situation mirrors Ema doing forensics better, because while the head detective should not be doing that work, its within the realm of believe-ability.
Although for the record, I would be perfectly happy if they split it up so you played a detective in the investigation segments and then played Phoenix in the courtroom, as long as they found a way to not make Phoenix's story suffer as a result. But they're never going to do this so nothing to worry about.

Same with me. Although I've become less interested in forensics and more interested in law. I'm thinking of studying it next year, once I've finished high school.
The forensics stuff makes me feel like a detective in the game.

The specific reason she's in 4 as a detective is because she failed the forensic examination test I'm pretty certain. Or Capcom was just too lazy to think of a reason to let the player do the scientific parts again that wouldn't seem contrived, other than the one that they already provided.

The police ran out of detectives when Gumshoe quit to pursue a higher-paying career in an instant noodle factory, so they instead chose that woman who just took her forensics exam. And why not use GK1 as an example?
Ema using her forensic tools in GK didn't seem like a good card to throw since a lot thought GK's writing wasn't as great, and not having the game written by the same writer can be a claim against it-albeit a little weak to my tastes-if looking for an opposing argument. That's only me taking precautions there, I like to be careful with my choice of words when I can help it.

It wasn't exactly easy.
I had to wipe multiple times to make it work. ( And no, nothing was wrong with my iPad. I tried it on my sister's iPad too and same results. )
