Hi everyone

In my school in Denmark, it has been suggested that we should use AA games for German lessons as an attempt to fuse education with entertainment. The original idea was to have every student purchase his or her own Nintendo DS, but in order to avoid the need of every student to spend about 185 US Dollars (which is the price of a DS in Denmark), we have thought of letting the students play AA ROMs on an emulator instead, which, of course, comes with some legal issues.

I then came to think of something which I believe I was once told: That it is actually legal to use ROMs on an emulator if you already own a legal copy of the game. If so, we would just have to buy a copy of the game in order to let the students play the game legally using an emulator.

Is that true?

While the preferable way would be to go 100% legal and have the DS and game cards, you can have ONE "backup" copy of the game (be it on a flash card or a ROM) so long as you hold a bona-fide copy. Again, ONE, not multiple instances of it.

HOWEVER!

I only know this applies to US law. Denmark might have a different interpretation to this, and it may not even be legal to have backups. Investigate copyright law in your country to see if you can do as planned before downloading anything.

What you do after that is your responsibility.

You can't just buy one copy of the game and then give the rom to a dozen different students. The law only applies on a one-original-one-copy basis as far as I know, and even then it's still legally iffy.

Either way we do not support or encourage discussion of the roms on this forum. If you really want to be be 100% legal you'll have to ask someone well versed in Denmark laws.
