What is the correct pronunciation of Godot? I pronounce it with the t silent.

Seeing as how the name is taken from the play "Waiting For Godot" (I believe), where it is pronounced Go-Doh, I believe that would be the correct pronunciation.

I do believe the proper pronunciation is God-Oh. I think Samuel Beckett said that, not sure though. I do know that's how they say it in the movie.

I always pronounced it "Guh-dough" but unless those lazy bastards at Capcom make PW:AA3 in full CGI FMV cutscenes with voice acting LIKE THEY SHOULD!! then it won't really make a difference!

Goh-Doh. The play "Waiting for Godot" was originally written in French, and the French usually pronounce -ot as a long O. So that'd probably be it.

I used to say "guh-doh" because that's how my dad would, but then he realized it is actually "goh-doh" from watching the play.

In Japanese it is "goh-doh" as well, with the second syllable being longer than the first.

I'm much more used to hearing Go-dot, because the only place I hear it pronounced is from my own internal monologe (Waiting for Godot is not a movie, hence it is not something I can watch).

Try using Goh-dot in a sentence or a conversation. It doesn't sound right at all, the sounds very harsh. (Most peoples names have a soft sound to them). The main pronunciation works better but that might just be me. And I've always called him Goh-doh because of Poirot :)

Problem is, it is so OBVIOUS that it is supposed to be pronounced Go-Dot. And it sounds CATCHY that way. You wouldn't know about how it should be pronounced Go-Doh unless you either got told or you have seen Waiting for Godot.

Actually, no, there isn't. Not that I know of, anyway.

When I got into Phoenix Wright fandom people were already spelling it "Godot". I don't quite remember when I first learned who Godot was, but in the game his name is spelled with Katakana, which would suggest his name is meant to be foreign. I haven't read "Waiting for Godot" myself but many people have assured me it is a sound reference.

I pronounce it gah-DOH. I say the "gah" part quickly and put more emphasis on the "DOH." Godot

As for the play, I don't know how sound a reference it is.

I hope I'm not spoiling anything, but the play is rather minimalist, and Godot never shows up. It's about two Russian hobos, in what I think is Italy, though it could just as easily be France. Either way, it's a strange kinda thing. There are five characters in the play, and not one of them is Godot (though the two main characters are perpetually waiting for him, as an ongoing gag).

You can read the play online. I lost the link, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

. I've been pronouncing it WITH the T and the emphasis on the first syllable. It seems it should be exactly the opposite (i.e. silent T and emphasis on the second syllable).

Yeah, it's a bit hard to tell.

Just taking examples from the art page, his fanbook entry romanizes it as 'Godot'. However, the postcard featuring him romanizes it as 'Godo'. So...who knows what the proper one is.
