What is the correct pronunciation of Godot? I pronounce it with the t silent.

"Goh-Doh", with a silent "T" seems to be the general way of pronouncing it.

Seeing as how the name is taken from the play "Waiting For Godot" (I believe), where it is pronounced Go-Doh, I believe that would be the correct pronunciation.

Nick Nothing to be done.
Edgeworth I'm beginning to come round to that opinion. All my life I've tried to put it from me, saying Miles, be reasonable, you haven't yet tried everything. And I resumed the struggle.

I do believe the proper pronunciation is God-Oh. I think Samuel Beckett said that, not sure though. I do know that's how they say it in the movie.

I always pronounced it "Guh-dough" but unless those lazy bastards at Capcom make PW:AA3 in full CGI FMV cutscenes with voice acting LIKE THEY SHOULD!! then it won't really make a difference!

Goh-Doh. The play "Waiting for Godot" was originally written in French, and the French usually pronounce -ot as a long O. So that'd probably be it.

I used to say "guh-doh" because that's how my dad would, but then he realized it is actually "goh-doh" from watching the play.

In Japanese it is "goh-doh" as well, with the second syllable being longer than the first.

I'm much more used to hearing Go-dot, because the only place I hear it pronounced is from my own internal monologe (Waiting for Godot is not a movie, hence it is not something I can watch).

But yeah, Godou is right. Think Hercule Poirot.

I can barely say Goh-doh. Seriously, it almost feels like my mouth isn't used to saying it and is having to dirll through a wall to get to the pronounciation.

I like it as Goh-DOT, thank you.

I kinda hope Capcom doesn't change his name to "Godo" just because of all this confusion on how to pronounce it... I would rather him be called "Javado" than "Godo". Seriously, "Godot" is an awesome name that shouldn't be changed at all. Payne

Go-doh, because I've played the Japanese version before... I never finished it actually, but I can read the Katakana shown in the name boxes.

For me, I've always say it as "Goh-DOT" with the T not silent. Either way, I really don't care how it is pronounced.

Try using Goh-dot in a sentence or a conversation. It doesn't sound right at all, the sounds very harsh. (Most peoples names have a soft sound to them). The main pronunciation works better but that might just be me. And I've always called him Goh-doh because of Poirot :)

The go-dot pronunciation really bugs me. You wouldn't mispronounce a real person's name if it "sounded better", why mispronounce the name of a famous play character and game character?

Godou is simply too french, excuse me Larry

Problem is, it is so OBVIOUS that it is supposed to be pronounced Go-Dot. And it sounds CATCHY that way. You wouldn't know about how it should be pronounced Go-Doh unless you either got told or you have seen Waiting for Godot.

Are you referring to that boxset of Beckett's plays that was released a few years back? I have that, but I've only watched about two. I need to get around to seeing those. >>;

Godoh, thanks, Beckett, would kill us all if we didn't pronounce it right. And, seriously, it's a quote from a great play, so only Japanese folks should say GO-DO-TO. They know almost nothing about Occidental theater plays

not sure. I downloaded it off the internets, so I don't know where it came from exactly Oops

speaking of which, though, is there any official source saying that he was named after the play? because I've seen his name spelled both "Godo" and "Godot" *on Japanese fanart sites, in romaji* both are technically right, but still. I mean....who knows, maybe he was named after the river ;)

Actually, no, there isn't. Not that I know of, anyway.

When I got into Phoenix Wright fandom people were already spelling it "Godot". I don't quite remember when I first learned who Godot was, but in the game his name is spelled with Katakana, which would suggest his name is meant to be foreign. I haven't read "Waiting for Godot" myself but many people have assured me it is a sound reference.

As for the play, I don't know how sound a reference it is.

I hope I'm not spoiling anything, but the play is rather minimalist, and Godot never shows up. It's about two Russian hobos, in what I think is Italy, though it could just as easily be France. Either way, it's a strange kinda thing. There are five characters in the play, and not one of them is Godot (though the two main characters are perpetually waiting for him, as an ongoing gag).

You can read the play online. I lost the link, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I'm slightly embarrassed about this Bell Boy. I've been pronouncing it WITH the T and the emphasis on the first syllable. It seems it should be exactly the opposite (i.e. silent T and emphasis on the second syllable).

Yeah, it's a bit hard to tell.

Just taking examples from the art page, his fanbook entry romanizes it as 'Godot'. However, the postcard featuring him romanizes it as 'Godo'. So...who knows what the proper one is.
