I loved the plot. It was full of twists. I never expected Kristoph would be the murderer. I thought it was Orly until Phoenix revealed he dined with Kristoph that night.
I loved all of the music in the game. I drew no pairings from this case but I thought that there had to be a tie between Trucy and Apollo when we first saw her for some weird reason (This was of course, before I discovered she too had the Perceive Power.).
I last played this case last night and for an hour this morning. It was still great and I'm thinking I'll be playing it again after the English release of GK just because I love this case.

The only problem with this is that it's almost TOO good. By the end of it you've learned that Kristoph killed Shadi, though you don't know why. This (coupled with a few other factors) make the final day of trial in 4-4 a bit tiresome and anticlimactic.
But oh well. 4-1 is fun and exciting and feels more like a longer case where you've actually done investigating, despite the fact that you never leave the courtroom!

At first I was very disappointed with the music. It suited the mood for the new courtroom, but that mood was pretty creepy. I'm alright with the music now, except for the cornered theme... The graphics were amazing though, when that crime scene turned 3D I was all like, "OH YEAAAAAHHH..!"
When I saw that the case was about Poker I thought, "Oh fudge, I don't even know how to play poker". Indeed, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the heck was going on. Luckily pressing saved the day and gave me enough information to move on. The walkthrough helped too.
Apollo's fine I guess, he's like Phoenix except even more of a hollow shell than Phoenix was before Iris. The Chords of Steel thing was pretty funny too I guess. I also felt bad for him seeing that his first trial ended with his mentor being the murderer.
Kristoph's guilt was a little surprising, but not too much. When I saw him do the exact same head-shake as Richard Wellington, I just KNEW there must've been something fishy about this guy...
I admit, Hobo Phoenix was a tragedy, I got over it when it made him even more of an awesome guy than before. All of a sudden he was even more developed as a character. But this case did make me feel very curious as to what happened...
Olga Orly was an awesome lady, she was probably the first awesome lady from Ace Attorney not to have good looks or good cleavage. Foreign accents are like a fetish of mine and unlike Jean Armstrong, her initial dialouge was PERFECT. And of course, nobody could possibly dislike her taking her clothes off no matter what she became. I was sure she was the killer but she wasn't, so that's a plus too.

No kidding, even when she was said to be Phoenix's daughter, I thought that Pearl and Phoenix were doing some kinda undercover thing or something like that and she was only pretending to be his daughter. But they just looked so alike, and she was even almost the right age...
Overall, decent case, but something about it always left me rather upset...

True but that's no excuse for a sprite artist to make a Plucy (*Sahwit shakes fist at Plucy artists*)
But Phoenix's change has a perfectly valid reason. As I once said to cold52 on Eduds Sprite thread, I believe Pearl would look more like Dahlia and Iris. We can even see this in a comparison of her normal sprite pose and Iris'.

Actually, I did some math, and I think they ARE the same age.
As for What I thought, I liked it, though I think the game in general should have been a sequal to the BAD ending of JFA, then Nick would have an excuse to not be a lawyer anymore (Yes they gave him one, but I didn't like it too much)

I loved this case and thought it was a step above the other introductory cases in the series in importance, difficulty, and sheer quality. It did a great job at introducing us to Apollo and his personality, as well as to Phoenix's current state. This case leaves you with a lot of questions regarding Nick and Kristoph, especially, but that curiosity drives you to play more of the game to uncover more details.
Apollo has become one of my favorite characters in the series (especially thanks to the Apollo Appreciation Thread in the GS4 forum), too. I love how headstrong he is; both he and Phoenix are driven by a strong sense of justice and the desire to help people in need, but Apollo is much more prone to bouts of recklessness. His emotions take over easily. Kristoph is fascinating, too, thanks to his pride and obsession with perfection. It makes him incredibly scary, yet interesting.
So... yeah. Awesome case, me thinks.

Anyways, I was somewhat unsatisfied with the case after I finished it. Kristoph is jailed without a motive having been established, Phoenix gave Apollo some forged evidence to use, and Olga Orly (the only character in the case that was enjoyable) never got in another word after her testimony. Surely she should have gotten to say something else considering that she was smacked upside the head by the victim. Poor Olga.
Orly does have probably my favorite character design though, so bonus points for that!
Either way, I guess this case depends way too much on 4-4 to be awesome. As a standalone case, it just leaves more questions than answers and feels messy. Combine it with 4-4 though, and suddenly everything makes sense.

Now, seeing as this is the introduction case to a new trilogy (DAMMIT GS5 WHERE ARE YOU), I suppose it would be appropriate to talk about Apollo in a more general sense. I remember when I first learned about the game that I knew I wasn't going to play it. "New protagonist?! I hate it when they do that!" But then I ended up spoiling myself on a few major parts of the game--"I'm never gonna play it anyway!"--and got hooked on his character for some reason I still can't explain. (Granted, it might do with Perceive and the Gramarye, but that comes later on.) So, I'm going to put myself out there and say that I like Apollo a
Speaking of Phoenix, I also really hated Phoenix at first. But I don't really think 33-year-old Phoenix is too much out of character for him, especially when you consider how long it's been and what got him there.
Trucy is....I felt like she was my idiot-proof guide. More so than Maya ever was. (More about that later, I suppose.) She was mysterious at first, though. She lost that once you got to know her, of course. XD
Kristoph is magnificent. Such an interesting character. Along with Apollo, I REALLY wanna know what his backstory was like.
So, yes. Adore this case. Hell, I adore this game (but 4-3 was just...that'll be a fun thread to read XD).

Did anyone else get a Yoda vibe from Hobo!Phoenix? He always had that mysterious "You'll see when the time is right" attitude about everything and felt so much more wise than his younger self.

Turnabout Trump is, without a doubt, my favorite case of GS4. It has so many things going for it! The art for the opening sequence is fantastic; Payne's swaggering confidence is back (even though he doesn't get to say much), and that hair flip of his is priceless; Kristoph is a cool defense aide before he's fingered as the murderer, and when he was charged with it, it just blew my mind (in a really awesome way); Apollo actually punches Phoenix (really surprised me, I think that forged evidence will come back to haunt him); and one of the best moments in the series EVER: hearing that oh-so-familiar "OBJECTION!" and turning to see Phoenix standing by my side as "Objection! 2001" starts to play.
Truly a wonderful case!

Anyway, first off I have to say that I prefer the T&T graphics/music to AJ. I can see how much effort has gone into the sprites and it does make the atmosphere feel cleaner and nicer, but... well, for me it just feels too clean, kind of artificial. Especially the new courtroom.
This was honestly my most WTF case in the entire series. Is that PHOENIX in the intro?! Who am I? Who's Kristoph Gavin? What's Phoenix doing!? What happened to the courtroom? What happened to Payne's HAIR?! Phoenix lost his badge!? Phoenix has a DAUGHTER?! Olga Orly - she did it...WAIT NO WHAT?! KRISTOPH? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?
On the replays, though, I can really admire the amount of foreshadowing and epicness in this. I mean, I only just realized that part of the opening sequence is set in Misham studio.
Although I appreciate how well it leads in to 4-4, my biggest gripe about this case is that without a motive you don't know what's going on, you're just going up against Kristoph because Phoenix tells you to. I know the whole point is that it all ties in together later on, but the truth is that for most of this case you really have no idea what you're doing or why. While this is a good character development point for Apollo, I suppose, it really diminishes the sense of satisfaction you get. There isn't even a proper breakdown from the actual murderer.
On my first playthrough it kind of felt like the game was going: "LOOK AT OUR AMAZING PLOT TWIST. KRISTOPH IS THE KILLER. DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING, DID YOU?"
"Okay, that's really awesome and all, but why? Did they even know each other?"
"SURE THEY DID, THEY MET IN THE HALLWAY AND THEN KRISTOPH KILLED HIM."
"But why? Is he just psycho?"
"BECAUSE HOBOPHOENIX SAYS SO. NOW BE QUIET, YOU'LL FIND OUT AT THE END OF THE GAME."
Despite my whining, I really like this case. The contradictions flow nicely, Olga Orly's brilliantly entertaining (OH REALLY, MS. ORLY?) and Apollo was adorable. I just wish there was a little more closure.

Anyway, I have to say that I'm not too keen on both Payne and Phoenix: Payne has a puke yellow/green suit on and as for Phoenix, he wasn't really forthcoming about the case (I can understand most witness's are reluctant to come forward with the truth, but Phoenix?).
Anyway, this is a good case, with an unexpected twist (at least I didn't expect it on my first go).

But anyway, this is one of my favorite cases ever. The surprise of Kristoph being guilty so soon in the game, Phoenix jumping behind the bench and then Apollo punching him--there were a lot of great moments and surprises. So much tension! And even though by the end Kristoph's motive is unclear, I think it leaves enough promise that it's not to unsatisfying. At least, I didn't find it unsatisfying: I was very eager to play more!
I really hope Apollo will get the chance to punch more people in later games!!

It was also the longest opening case, and the most difficult in my opinion. I got stuck quite a bit on the testimonies because you would have to pay attention to very small details (Such as trying to figure out the mystery behind the fake card). Speaking of this, the new music for the courtroom and testimony scenes are OK, but somehow they don't seem as memorable as the ones from the previous games. Also, the 3D evidence and the crime scene recreations were awesome. When I perceived for the first time it freaked me out because I thought Apollo was starting to trip out or something XD It's a pretty cool feature, but the magatama will still be the coolest in my eyes :)
Now, onto the characters...
Apollo: Aww I love this guy :3 At first I thought he was gonna be a clone of Phoenix but then I realized he's actually different. He seems even more sarcastic, but he seemed even more nervous at the start than him to me. His introduction here was great, and he's a really fun character.
Phoenix: I had no idea who that hobo was at first, and when they revealed it was him I was like WTF?! Yeah, I was really thrown for a loop on that one. He's definitely mellowed out quite a bit since his lawyer days, and when they were talking about his badge being revoked it made me sad. However, he's still the same ol' Nick, right? :)
Trucy: You only get a brief glimpse of her here, so I'll talk about her more on the 'Turnabout Corner' thread.
Kristoph: He seemed like a nice guy at first, being Apollo's mentor and whatnot, but when they revealed he was the killer I was shocked. I didn't see it coming, really. I was like, "This probably won't be the last time I'll see him", and sure enough I was right (In episode 4).
Payne: He's pretty much the same as always, except with longer hair XD
Olga: She was pretty cool, I guess. I actually thought she was the killer at first, but Kristoph proved otherwise. I totally didn't expect her to transform from a Russian lady into a pirate. And the jokes with her last name were hilarious (ORLY?!)
My final verdict on this case was that it was my second favorite from AJ and my favorite opening case in the series, next to Turnabout Memories from T&T.

I will buy that. It is as you say. It slams you in the face so hard you're like "this game has something else left to throw at you?"
Also, the end of the game is made better if you try to see things through Klavier's eyes. That's what I did and it put things in perspective.
