Why "待った"?

I've been wondering for a while why exactly the series uses 待った... Anyone got an answer?
(And I mean 待った as opposed to 待って or 待て)

I'm not an expert on any language besides English, but I think that verb tense is a pain to learn in almost any language.

Interesting. I asked a friend of mine in my class (私も今三学期の日本語の授業を取っている) who knows a lot of little things like that and she hadn't heard of that sort of usage. I'd ask the TA, but class time is usually short as it is and it has absolutely nothing to do with the grammar we're covering at the moment.

When Naruhodou says "Matta", I guess that situation counts as a simple whole.

I spoke with one of my old Japanese teachers earlier today, and I had wanted to know for myself, so I asked him about it and you're right. The use of た changes it to become rather more forceful, demanding or quite imperative. It's not as polite as て. :)
