So I got to watch a subtitled version of the movie, and I'll leave it at that.
I have to say, I'm impressed. Without trying to spoil anything, A lot of details were changed about a lot of the cases, but the movie I found was better for it. White being a witness in the final case, Yogi's, Edgeworth's and Gregory's story in the elevator murder, for instance. Then there were details alluded to in the game, but the movie made them such essential parts of the story telling, that I can't comprehend how they weren't included in the game itself. Especially Yani Yogi's revelation. My god.
Then there's stuff that failed in both the game and the movie. Investigation still sucks compared to court, being the most obvious example. Phoenix being at a loss and playing with papers was a low. And Mia's quite useless as a summon as ever.
Some of the characters are a bit different. Butz's antics are even more zany in the movie then the game. Maya I found to be significantly less annoying in the movie then the games. (This is major for me, Maya's one of my least favorite characters). She still fangirl's over the steel samurai (Tactfully!), but she's also shown to know how to play piano rather well. She doesn't act as a defense aid in court, but whenever she has something important to interject, she stands up from the crowd and bravely says what needs to be said. She became my favorite supporting character.
Von Karma on the other hand, I don't know what to say about. He was my favorite character in the game, but in the movie, he's more diplomatic. It works. It really does, colors him as a sly bastard. And he's still all about the evidence and the proof, more then Edgeworth. But, he didn't feel quite like the final boss he was in the game.
The best bastard in the courtroom award therefore goes to Edgeworth. He's less about proof then Von Karma, but when it's time to show evidence, no one does it more irritatingly smug-full then the resident cravat wearer. No words do it justice when he snaps his fingers and gigantic holograms of damning evidence are summoned. Really, I hope hologram evidence makes its return in GS5. Easily the best eye candy in the show.
Then, here's the thing that royally confused me. The folks in the courtroom watching. Tons of them have very obnoxiously colorful and decorated costumes, that they HAVE to be references to other characters. But aside from Franny, Horseman, and one of the Marshal brothers, I didn't nab most of them. And there's gotta be above 20 of them. I fail as an AA fan!
The movie's no blockbuster, but I think it's continuing the (very recent) trend of Videogames making good movies.
