Usually when a song reminds me of Ace Attorney, it's where it seems like it would be a good soundtrack to accompany that certain scene in the game. So imagine a movie/tv show version of the scene, and the song under it, kind Miami Vice-style. For descriptive purposes, I'll use an imaginary "Phoenix Wright TV Show" to get my point across. In fact, (maybe because I'm a cinema major) I have over the years subconsciously planned out exactly how these scenes would look like. So while they originally reminded me of the moods I felt while playing AA, now they are part of these scenes in my head. Spoilers for all the games:
"Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams" - Tears for Fears | "Theme Song"
http://youtu.be/aDde8w-xKRo?t=58sThe sound of this song is very Ace Attorney to me, and I could see this being a theme song-like intro or something. I started it at the part that I'm talking about, as the song is very long and has some parts which don't really sound the same, like when the woman starts singing alone. I'm only talking about the big chorus part.
"Little Secrets" - Passion Pit | Rise from the Ashes "End Song"
http://youtu.be/-z5OeAYFtT0When I hear this I always think of the finale of Rise from the Ashes, where Lana and Ema reunite and Phoenix wins his fist case without Maya. I can imagine Phoenix just sitting in his office later that day, confident and ready to take on his cases and try to help his clients on his own now. While in the beginning of the case he feels a little lost, he is putting his best foot forward and feels ready to do it now. It would be a perfect "season finale" kind of vibe - of course because unknown to us at the time, Maya comes back and everything goes back to normal very soon after.
"Bridge over Troubled Water" - Simon & Garfunkel | GS2 "End Song"
http://youtu.be/jjNgn4r6SOAI always see this as the finale of GS2. While Maya has been rescued and Engarde found guilty, because of the stress and traumatic nature of the case Phoenix is exhausted and still feels a little melancholy. I imagine this being "in-universe" sound rather than a straight soundtrack - as in its playing in the restaurant that they're in or something and it slowly becomes the soundtrack. I can see everyone talking and having fun eating and talking and the camera pans to Phoenix, visibly exhausted in his chair with a drink, still frazzled and thoughtful but also happy. Fade out.
"In the Air Tonight" - Phil Collins | Bridge to the Turnabout
http://youtu.be/ITJUS9a_XKAThis song is probably the most perfect of all of them. First off, look at lyrics!
Quote:
Well, if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand, I've seen your face before my friend, But I don't know if you know who I am
Well, I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes, So you can wipe off the grin, I know where you've been, It's all been a pack of lies
Well I remember, I remember don't worry, How could I ever forget, it's the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep your silence up, no you don't fool me, The hurt doesn't show; but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you or me
Apart from fairly well--describing the case/dahila/Phoenix's thought process, it also fits perfectly into how the initial crime scene would play out.
I can see a shot of Phoenix in his room, looking at the magazine article with Dahlia in it, then looking out the window at the other temple across the river. Another shot of Iris lighting a fire and thinking, Bikini doing her stuff. Phoenix walks outside into the cool air, and then he sees the fire right when those drums start up. He runs across the bridge as it breaks, and while this happens screams are heard as all hell breaks loose.
"Dreams" - Passion Pit (Originally by the Cranberrys) | PW "Finale"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e56JIp2hXcYI see this as the "finale" of Phoenix's story - whether that would be the end of the fictional show's run, or his arc on it before bringing Apollo in. I see different shots of Phoenix re-doing his office, Maya beginning to study spirit channeling at the temple, birthdays, holidays, important events, showing that these people (the cast of the three) will interact in some way. All these shots would be panning right, and "flowing" into eachother, ending on a shot of Phoenix, alone in his office at his desk, thinking about something. It seems emptier than it used to be, but it's not a negative feeling of emptiness. More like when your kids move out to become adults. The camera pans right up to his fade, then a very slow fade to black as the song flickers out at the end.
"Land of Confusion" - Genesis | Edgeworth "Theme Song"
http://youtu.be/ZujuYiweht8I don't have a lot of reasoning for this, and if I was to pick the music for a PW show I probably wouldn't use this for Edgeworth's intro, but for some reason when I think of Investigations gameplay I think of it happening to this song. Maybe because the music of AAI is very genesis-like.
"Chain of Fools" - Aretha Franklin | Intro to "Turnabout Airlines"
http://youtu.be/gGAiW5dOnKoThis one is purely in my imagination and isn't a real scene in the game, but I think it's pretty cool. The intro to the "Turnabout Airlines" episode could feature a montage of Ackbey Hicks being involved in investigating the smuggling. It would be from a first-person perspective, so we would see what he sees, even his hands moving and walking and stuff, so it's still a mystery who it is. It would quickly cut from him getting the assignment to investigating, looking over records, and right before the last half of the song seeing a blurred sillouete pushing him over the edge of the plane. No other audio than the music.
"Mama" - Genesis | The Kidnapped Turnabout Intro
http://youtu.be/3L9fOGg9wO8The music to the real case is very similar to this, so it's a good fit. Edgeworth slowly walking into the amusement park with the bag, looking around, being aware that any one of the guests there could be the kidnappers. Contrast the tension of the song and situation with the bright, happy environment of the park. End in the haunted house when Edgeworth gets knocked out. Cut occasionally to Edgeworth on a wire talking to him.
"Shout" - Tears for Fears | Apollo "Theme Song"
http://youtu.be/01QA90IuOYYI feel like this song fits the Apollo world a little better than the original. It's a little slower-paced and has a sound more like the AJ soundtrack. But it sounds enough like the original that there's some symmetry (in reality, the original song was actually a remix of the instrumentals of this song with new lyrics).
"Don't Give Up" - Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush | Montage of Phoenix's post-disbarment days
http://youtu.be/av11y3tm_ekI think this is perfect for after Phoenix is disbarred. In fact, remember that zoom in to phoenix shot in the end of my T&T segment? Emulate that and reverse it with out of work Phoenix, now with a child sitting on the couch in the room. Different shots of Phoenix talking to edgeworth, an adult maya, and looking in records for any details on where Trucy's parents could be. Him in the job market, finally getting the piano job. Phoenix realizes that whatever sadness he felt about losing his job is outweighed by the fact that he now has to care for this child.
"Storms in Africa" - Enya | Jury Unveiling
http://youtu.be/iLezeb-U0_MI think this would work great for a scene where the jury is ready and walks out of their room to announce the verdict. Apollo, Phoenix, Trucy, and the rest watch, concerned about the case but aware that history is being made here. Lots of slow motion here. This would be a great way to reveal Lamorior's presence in the jury as well.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.
