I like the GBA version much better. Only problem is that I can't understand Japenese at all. :sadshoe:

In GS1, "Age, Regret, Retribution" and "Cross Examination ~ Moderate 2001" sound sooo much cooler on the GBA! And, of course the weird psychedelic court backgrounds are fun too.

I've played GS3 Japanese version and I prefer DS versions.
About the music: I suppose they could sound better but as I haven't heard the GBA versions I can't really say.

DS versions.
Due to english.
And imo, the music is better.
The music on the GBA just sounds so..weird. Unusual.. I don't know the word.

GS3 soundtrack is good, but I'm ready for it to be DS'itized. :]]

Probably. Since the DS versions are remakes... and remakes are SUPPOSED to be superior. :godot:

I perfer the DS version. It's a lot quicker to select things with a stylus stick.

Plus for the fact it is in English. :P

The DS version of course.

- Better music
- Stylus control
- New case (1-5)
- English :)

Surely DS version because I find two screens way more handy, and just like Szabu stated already - there is a new case (that I absolutely love, by the way).

DS version.

It spreads everything out more, in the GBA version, its all squished together in one small screen.
The DS version wins just for having it spread between two screens.

DS version, All the Way! For many reasons.

1 - English version

2 - Nicer/Better graphics.

3 - Wider/Bigger screens.

4 - Use of Touch Screen.

5 - Clearer, Better Quality Sound Effects.

Besides, I was never familiar with Gyakuten Saiban for the GBA system (since it was mainly Japanese), until Phoenix Wright came and showed up for the DS.

I must say the DS is superior in just about every way.

So, obviously my vote would go to the DS version.

The DS version, for all the reasons mentioned above.. plus the GBA music makes me feel like I've been warped back to 1994 or something. Reminds me of DOS games

Hmm... I've never actually played the GBA version (Whats the point? I wouldn't understand it) but I HAVE looked at screens and listened to the music... And I'd have to say DS is better. Better quality music, DS graphics and I can play it with one hand (using a stylus of course)!

Gee, I'd hate to be a Phoenix Wright fan in Japan, though. Just think about it, will you buy the GBA version or wait until the DS? It'd be a big choice. :meekins:

DS version. This game is just made for the DS, I mean, I've saw clips of GS1 GBA, and selecting evidence looks awkward. Heck, I didn't even know a GBA version existed until lately!

Well this game was certainly not made for the DS since it's pretty old, but I have to agree that the DS interface is incredibly good--I think it's one of the best uses of the DS interface so far, it's just so simple and intuitive and makes perfect sense no matter who you are.

I have to say that I felt that the sprites somehow looked a little better on the GBA though. Maybe it's just my imagination and/or nostalgia talking, but I felt that way ever since GS1 was transcoded to DS.

With GS3, since I played the case 3-1 with that translation patch, and now played the DS version, I had the same thing again...
Spoiler: I don't know how far to go with spoilers, but this is about Case 3-1 ;D
Dahlia Hawthorne looks just a tiny bit more "eerily-cute-but-something's-not-quite-right" in the GBA version, in my opinion. Although she still looks like that in the DS version, but the "teary-filled eyes" sprite doesn't creep me out as much as it did in the GBA version. However that may be the result of already having seen it before...

It simply doesn't make sense that you prefer GBA over DS. In the DS versions graphics are superior, musics are better and gameplay, due to touch screen and Court record is better. End of story imho.

Playing through the GBA version of GS3, I have to say the court record and presenting is actually slightly more intuitive than the DS version. But I prefer the DS version for reasons other than that.

DS versions on a whole. I mean, there are more features on that and all, not to mention the music has higher quality. Although I admit, hearing GS3's GBA music isn't so bad. Playing Rise from the Ashes is also a plus since it's DS-only. Some of the best parts about that case was the use of the touch screen.

The one thing I noticed is that in the GBA versions, when Phoenix is extending his finger, his arm moves up and down but in the DS versions it doesn't. Anyone know why?

I'm fairly sure the grand majority of the forum (myself included) will pick the DS remakes over the original versions. Not simply because most of them have only played the DS version due to language barriers, but the DS versions improve over the originals in many ways; a better game interface, graphical and sound/music improvements, among other things.

It's more than just saying the DS version is better simply because it's on the DS, you know. All of the aforementioned things make the DS remakes better than the originals as a whole. Of course, it also helps that they're in a language most of us can comprehend.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons. I think it's because on the DS version, most of the time I think they just make the characters shorter instead of adding space onto them. In the GBA version, Gumshoe pretty much takes up the entire screen, and I kinda like it better that way.

Also, the health bar looks better on the GBA version. On the DS it kinda looks small and paathetic. :yuusaku:

The DS versions are technically superior but I'm sure I would prefer the GBA versions. Simply because I love my GBM.

*Cough* *cough*

:objection:

Mr. Who, I will stop speculating at this point and present some evidence.

Here is a screenshot of Gyakuten Saiban 3 GBA, of our dear lady Dahlia (or, Dolores as the fan-translator called her):
Image

And... Here's a screenshot of the same sprite as it appears on the DS!
Image

See the difference, Mr. Who?! :object:

As we can read on Wikipedia and elsewhere, the GBA's resolution is 240 x 160 pixels, or a pixel ratio of 1.5. The DS's top and bottom screen both have a resolution of 256 x 192 pixels, or a ratio of 1.1/3. That's why you get black bars on the DS when playing GBA games on it.

Anyway... :redd:

The fact that everybody appears taller in the GBA version lends at least some credibility to my claim that I prefer the GBA version. You can see from the background that not only is there more of the sprite on-screen, she is also definitely placed lower on the background (perhaps because there is just not more of the background in existence).

Spoiler:
I actually mean the one where she cries with those huge deer-eyes, I always thought it was an extremely eerie sprite, made me feel really uncomfortable, and I had no idea what was coming at all! I totally felt sorry for Payne when she kept using it on him to shut him up. :payne: (Although the eyes glowing in pure evil was really really freaky too, certainly!)

That's what Dalhai looks like on the DS version. :beef:
Her umbrella looks too big for some reason.

Guess_Who wrote:

I said most of the time. Obviously, for some sprites, they have to add on space. But I think for most of them, they just leave them as they are. I think they do that with Gumshoe, Maya, Pearl, Edgeworth (outside of court), and pretty much everyone who isn't in the courtroom. In the detention center and witness stand, on the DS version at least, I think the characters are always raised up a bit, too.

Well, overall I guess I'd have to prefer the DS versions. I just meant graphically, I like the DS interface a bit better than the GBA one. I mean, the DS interface is just so flawless, it's probably one of my favourite interfaces of all time. :scientific:

Plus there's the whole "I don't speak Japanese" thing... :agia-shock:

As for the music, I know they say it's been remixed/updated, but I honestly can't tell any major difference between the music in the DS version and the GBA version, aside from coming out of stereo speakers and perhaps having a slightly better sound quality. There may also be extra reverb channels, but don't hold me to that. They aren't that different from each other, at any rate. :will:

You're contradicting yourself here.

The evidence is in your own screenshots:

Image

I took your DS screenshot, cropped out the first screen, centered the GBA image over it, and set the transparency to 50%. As you can see, Dahlia's sprite lines up perfectly. Therefore, she could not have been moved any further down, since she is still centered in the frame. The two versions also have completely different backgrounds, meaning that using the background for comparisons is impossible.

As for your complaint that there is more sprite on screen, that can be chalked up to screen resolution. As you said yourself, the GBA has a lower resolution than the DS, producing the black bars seen when playing a GBA game on the DS. The DS version simply shows the rest of the sprite that is cut off by the GBA's screen resolution.

The only thing that doesn't fit is her elbow (and a bit of her stomach), which is covered by the witness stand in the GBA version. That's because the witness stand is a few pixels lower in the DS version, which, actually, would make the characters seem... taller in the DS version.

:godot: Ha... He's got you there.

...

:objection:

:udgy:
:nick-sweat:

...

:hair-flip:

I think you underestimate me. Your assessment is not entirely incorrect, but you simply misinterpreted my use of the word "lower". The sprite is indeed exactly the same as the GBA version, but you can see more of it. Therefore, any positional change is going to be interpreted as her being taller or shorter than on the GBA version.

HOWEVER! While the witness stand is moved down, since you can see more of her on screen, it will always look like she is smaller than on the GBA version, even if there is more of her to be seen from the witness stand up. She is taking up less "screen real-estate" (note that her umbrella is not really her in this interpretation), and therefore has less visual impact as the GBA version. ERGO! My use of the word "lower" is not necessarily contradictory, but simply vague. What I meant, of course, was that the screen itself is larger.

Also, although the background is admittedly different, it's clear that the GBA version has her (and any other sprite) standing out taller compared to the background, specifically the judge's tribune. Dahlia's head sticks out well above the tribune's edge in the GBA version, but on the DS version, only her hair does!

What do you say to that, Mr. Who! :youngpayne:

(This is unbelievably fun. :redd: )

:holdit:

First, that's not the Judge's tribune, it's the door frame for the entrance. The judge is in front of the witness, not behind.

And second, the comparison still doesn't work because the door frame itself changed between the two versions. Why?
Because the door has changed. Compare the decoration on the door in the GBA version to the decoration in the DS version.

GBA:
Image
DS:
Image

While the GBA version has square decoration, the DS version has rectangular decoration. The rectangles are the same width as the squares - but the rectangles are taller. This leads to an obvious conclusion.

The door itself taller. And if the door is taller, then Dahlia's head would not appear to be as high above it.

Haha, he has decisive evidence. It's going to be hard to wiggle yourself out of that one.

I have played both version, I do like the DS version due to the double speaker, the clearer sprites, and more of a sense of it's easier to find things during investigation time.

ANYWAY! I liked the way the sprites appeared in relation to the backgrounds on the GBA better. :edgy:

At least as far as I've seen them, since I've only played GS1 and the first case of GS3...

I like the DS sprites because they are extended. I think that the GBA version makes them WAAAAY too short. The DS is far supperior graphics wise. Especially considering that with new cases and games in the series, they can up the grafics to twice the ammount of colours in a sprite or background.

When I played through GS3 on the GBA, I found that the presenting and checking of evidence to be harder, due to the fact that you have to press buttons to get there. I found that very tough. That is also why Phoenix says to Edgeworth, in the lunch-theft case, that "He can expect a much more fearsome opponent now," do to the fact that he can check up on evidence much smoother and faster.

As for the music, I refuse to use GBA-quality music on my iPod, because it is so low quality compared to the DS music. It sounds chobby, and it doesn't bring out the full effect that has been put in by the composers. Some of the GS2 ones does indeed sound a slight better on the GBA, but that is because the sound upgrade to the DS failed miserably.
