As to why she would have moved out of the village before meeting Nick, I'm not sure.

Well, in my opinion, that contradicts the events at the beginning of Justice For All.
Think about it, as far as we know, she's only with Phoenix during cases. So, she had no real need to return to Kurian Village.
The biggest evidence of this, I believe, comes when Maya asks about freezing cold waterfalls. She says that she sometimes sits under freezing waterfalls to hone her concentration, which means she had a waterfall near the Kurian Village. If she had a place in Kurian Village, she could easily train under the waterfall at nights and when they aren't working on a case.
Therefore, she probably owns an apartment in the city.
