I don't think they ever openly state in-game which criminals got death and which didn't but they strongly hint that Manfred could have possibly been sentenced to death.

And about Mimi, I think that in the end her death toll reached sixteen people. The fourteen patients who died from her medical error, then her sister in the car crash, and finally Dr. Grey. Although most of these were certainly not committed on purpose, I cannot see her coming away with anything less than the DP. Even her attack on Grey was brutal. Stabbed him, and then shot him, and nearly got Maya shot too.
Though I suppose she could get Life too, if she struck a plea bargain. Maybe I'm overthinking this.

I think, say Richard Wellington, would have got the DP because he killed an officer in cold blood. That sort of thing means the DP and there's no way out. I think so anyways.

Morgan was put in prison for her help in 2-2. In GS3 they make a remark about her "carrying out her sentence" but I don't know if that means she was ever meant to be released or was sentenced to life. T&T might clear that up.
Three people in GS3 are sentenced to be executed. In the case of 2 of them it was definately premeditated, but one's a little iffy.
I'm inclined to believe that 2nd degree murder will still get you executed. There's nothing to indicate that confessing will lower your sentence (though I guess we can assume that it does, considering people actually do it in the games). As for Dee...she might not have ever been charged with murder, but she did confess to extortion, so she probably spent at least some time in jail.

Also, I feel I must note our friend Yanni Yogi. He was suspected of murder, but got off on Guilty But Not At Fault, did he not? That was the impression I got, anyway. So that's a possible plea for some of our other villains. There are certainly a few who could get away with that plea, I'm sure. "Insanity" and all.

I'm thinking he just associated the name "von Karma" with Manfred since at that point he was the only von Karma Phoenix had ever heard of. It's like how saying "Edgeworth" makes you think of Miles rather than Gregory since Miles is more well known. Gumshoe immediately tells Phoenix it's Manfred's successor in a few lines anyway although he doesn't specify gender.

From what I understand, death penalty is on a case by case basis. I probably should do some more research into this, huh?

Federal Law provides death penalty for many homicide-related crimes, as well as espionage, treason, and trafficking large quantities of drugs.[131] Many states have their own laws regarding the death penalty. As of 2007, the Death Penalty has been abolished or found unconstitutional in 12+ states, although the rest still exercise the death penalty. Although legally a punishment of several crimes, it has not been applied for any crime other than murder or conspiracy to murder since 1964. It is now only used in cases of murder accompanied by previously identified special circumstances (e.g., murder and rape, murder and kidnapping, etc.) Some states also impose it for some cases of sexual assault especially sex crimes against children (i.e. statutory rape, sexual assault against a minor). Sentences of death must be handed down by a jury, not by a judge alone; the jury must hand down the sentence at the conclusion of a separate penalty phase of the trial (at least implying the jurors who sentence the person to death were the same jurors who convicted him or her of the crime). So basically it's broken down by state and crime. I don't think anything will guarantee or not guarentee capital punishment.

Yes, now that I'm done, I have reached the conclusion that that was sarcasm. Anyway, of the first two games, I think that the only ones who wouldve gotten death are Manfred, Gant, and Wellington. I cant see the public letting Gant worm out of the death sentence...I mean, his case would be completely in the publics eye, and he would have killed two people and blackmailed another high-ranking officer!
