Post subject:  Edgeworth's Dog

Okay so I'm writing a fic that takes place in Edgeworth's home and I'm contemplating his mythical dog and require some guidance.

I know the existence of said dog is some kind of running joke among the game writers but it does seem to have gotten into fanon a bit so I'm debating including it.

However, there is a bit of a problem - the source seems to regard it as a "large brown dog" but in a lot of fics it has myseriously morphed into a shiba inu (sp?) which is about as far from a "large brown dog" as you can get short of a chihuahua.

Is there any reasoning for this or is it just the same kind of jokery that implies that Edgeworth wears pink knickers? Never having owned a shiba inu I'm leery of being wide off the mark in regard to personality and offending SI owners everywhere. (And before anyone picks me up on saying dogs don't have perosnalities, try owning a salukiXs who regularly looks at you as if to say "I hope you wahsed those hands before you touched me").

Any guidance from those who unlike me have read the mangas and the doujinshi?

I think that it says under Edgeworth's profile about Pesu that "fans speculate that it is a Shiba Inu" or something along those lines. So, there you go. Fan speculation. I always thought that Pesu was a "big brown dog" because of this picture.

...It's just fanart, though, so I don't know how accurate it is.

I think you can pretty much speculate that Pesu is anything, really, seeing as the dog was created by fandom. I'm not sure if there are any set rules.

I'm afraid I don't subscribe to the obsession that everything he wears must be pink because we've seen him in one pink outfit :)

Perhaps it is more customary in Japan, since that book is Japanese.

Well, or it would have been a Bit Rude to have him in the nude in what looks very much like a book aimed at an all ages audience (just guessing that from the art style mind).

I feel norty now for having Phoenix sleep in boxers in my fic the other week - and that was only because he had guests over :redd:

I don't believe "brown" was ever part of the description, but Takumi does joke about Edgeworth having a dog named Pesu. You have to keep in mind too that a Japanese person's idea of a "large" dog might be small, with how crowded the cities are.

Someone once sent me a photo of a Shiba Inu with a bib on that said "Pesu" on it, but...now I can't remember if it was actually someone related to the game with the dog, or if Takumi picked "Pesu" because it was already a well known dog, or...what. I wish I'd saved that picture... :yuusaku:

Post subject:  Re: Edgeworth's Dog

I was going by Wikipedia I must admit for the "large" and "brown" descriptors. I can see how a SI would be more popular in Japan, being a native (or near enough) breed, but as it's a toy-sized breed I'm not sure anyone would regard it as big.

I can also see how the localisation of the game might lead to fans going for, say, a chocolate retriever instead. Although I don't really see Edgeworth as a retriever owner.

Gah! :godot:

Yeah I'd figure him for an afghan or a pure saluki. Just so the whole like dog/like owner thing would work well :)

Well, about all the "real" information on Pess you're going to get is in Edgeworth's profile. I would go with the profile and stay with Shiba Inu, but it's your call.

Hmm, I personally see him with an Afghan or a Great Dane, even a Greyhound. Now that I think about it a Greyhound fits Edgeworth.

Post subject:  Re: Edgeworth's Dog

I'm going to argue against the "Pesu is a Shiba Inu" theory.

Although, by Japanese apartment living standards, a Shiba would be about as big as you'd want... There are more than 1 breed of dog that is Japanese. And they're big. A Shiba is considered medium to moderate size, so I'm pretty sure when the writers said large, they meant it. In my opinion, Shibas are a small sized dog, weighing between 15 and 25 pounds.

The Akita Inu (quite common to Akitas in the US, although I must confess, I'm from a terrier owning home, so I'm not really good with the working group breeds). About 75+ pounds and approximately 2 feet at the shoulders. Big dog.

The other large dog of the Japanese breeds is the Tosa Inu, weighing between 80 and 120 pounds (in Japan. Westerners breed them much much bigger). They're also about 2 feet at the shoulders. However, definately not a fit for Mr. Edgeworth, considering they look like they'd probably slobber on things and they're a fighting dog.. I can't see him with a fighting dog.

The Ainu Inu and the Shikoku Inu are more medium sized, about 45-65 pounds.

Also, keep in mind that Edgey did spent a lot of time overseas when living with the Von Karmas.. Depending on the localization you're using in your fic (he would've lived in the US in the Japanese vs Germany in the US version) you have breeds common in those areas to consider as well. Since it is mentioned that his "emotional state may very well hinge on Pesu's well being", I'm thinking a more moody, neurotic type of dog.. Greyhounds, Weimaraner, Vizsla.. I don't know too many Afghan Hounds or Salukis personally, but the one's I've seen at shows give me that "oh, you hang out with those obnoxious jumpy dogs.. don't come near me" look, so they're probably great options too. I've seen Pesu depicted as a Collie a lot. I can also see Pesu as a German or Doberman Pinscher, a German Shepherd, any of the Belgian sheepdog breeds, or a Giant Schnauzer (as they are the unofficial gay guy dog of my neighborhood.. not to accuse Edgeworth of anything).

Whatever breed you use, search for the breed's club. They usually have a pretty honest summary of the personality of the breed , so you'll be less likely to have owners of that breed going "NO WAI MY WHATEVER IS NOT LIEK THAT! MEANIE!"

...Can you tell I'm a dog person?

Considering how stubborn labs tend to be, I kind of doubt it. I expect something more loyal (though admittedly, labs get pretty loyal after three years)

I'm a dog person to which is why I am leery of getting the personality wrong if I specify a breed.

I'm a lurcher girl myself but again, working dog, so I wouldn't inflict one on Edgeworth. Pure saluki I could see, however. One of ours is 2/3 saluki and there's a good reason she's nicknamed Princess Tippytoes (rolls eyes).

Another possible candidate could be a Chow mix (I don't see him having a purebred Chow). The whole basis behind the collie argument is the ruff, but Chows have rather prominent ones too. And, like Edgeworth, Chows can be aloof with strangers while collies (from the stereotypes that I've seen) are rather friendly. I mean, it's just kind of hard to associate Edgey with Lassie.

Another pertinent question though: how does Edgeworth get all of the dog hair out?

That is one of the reasons I think Pesu is probably a longer haired dog. They don't shed as much and it is far more responsive to lint brushes. I usually look like I'm speckled, but that's what I get for having two mostly white dogs and a mostly black wardrobe...

So, my guess? Weekly visits to the groomer, and a closet full of lint brushes.
