Wow those are some nice drawings, thanks for posting them, I don't always have the patience to click on the thousand little boxes the Japanese fan artists seem to like to use.

To me it's kind of a surprise that people don't like the evolved Phoenix. What he's become is a logical progression from the stuff that's happened to him over his adult life really (college, 3 years as an attorney, 7 years shammed/new dad). It would be awkward and static for him to stay a newbie spaz, who gives away all his thoughts with his expressions. That kind of person could never turn around the case with Kristoph. In that respect he had to learn how to put on a 'poker face'. Also, we see him from the perspective of Apollo, whom he clearly has an agenda with and conducts himself appropriately according to it. In my opinion what Phoenix thinks Apollo needs most at this point in his career is not someone who will tell him what to do or even provide an example of what he should be, but to be put into situations where he can figure it out for himself. Remember, Phoenix lost his mentor at the beginning of his career. He learned the basics like 'believe in your client's innocence', but after that he had to figure out of himself (occasionally getting pushed in the right direction in dire times). He sets Apollo up to learn the things he thinks are important. 'Go investigate my hit and run, my daughter's panty snatcher, and a noodle stand theft for at most a bowl of free noodles. Oh look, coincidentally while you're out doing this investigative exercise you stumble onto a real crime and get a real client.' Phoenix knows (and we know) how to investigate to uncover the truth of a crime, to help someone because its the right thing to do, what it means to defend someone etc, but Apollo doesn't (and also those people who are weird and hop onto the series at GS4).

As for his sarcastic wit that we all loved from the first games we heard that because we were playing as him. Most of those comments were thought or grumbled so that maybe the nearby companion could hear. You can kind of tell he still has that same humor by the things Trucy mentions and of course when you get to play his perspective again.

Oki, enough essaying ... clearly I love Hobohodo :hobohodo:

I wonder what would happen if past Phoenix (Post GS3, but before Gramarye trial) traveled to the present (GS4)? I don't mean the whole "Universe tears itself apart" thing, nor do I mean "Phoenix goes to the future, but he's trapped in the body of his future self!"

I'm talking "Phoenix goes to the future to find his future self. He has a daughter AND a protege!?" It would be interesting, yeah?

I can't say I disliked Phoenix this game, at all. Infact I was pretty much ecstatic at the first case.

The only thing really noteworthy is how I noticed that well... His -face- changed, Bones, everything. In GS1-3, He looks much more eagle-faced. Now he doesn't show a sign of it.

I did read the topic title but in my experience so far with this site, everyone has been courteous enough to mark their individual spoilers as well

For example if the post had spoilers on 2-4 would usually have a box like
Spoiler: 2-4

I wasn't aware that I needed to beat all the games to have formed an opinion and want to discuss it about Phoenix.

I thought that was the SWEETEST thing... the moment he was talking about Trucy like that. <333 His sense of justice is definitely still there, but it's gotten a lot more realistic than just "believe in your client, and everything will be A-OK! :butzthumbs: "

My only gripe was that just because he's not a lawyer anymore doesn't mean he can't shave once in a while lol (technically he just LOOKS like a hobo.. nothing else). And I wanted a surprise sprite where he takes off his hat! That would've been awesome!
He should have taken off his hat in 4-1 when he pointed his finger all retro-y.

I wanted him to take off his hat, hold it to his chest, smile, and then tell you to GTFO. No, no I wanted him to do that minus the GTFO when you do the end of the 4th case and he tells you to chose guilty or not guilty or during something equally epic.

That's a pretty good drawing, Icer. I agree that the hat needs to come off in GS5... I miss seeing his spiky hair. I'm hoping they'll give Phoenix his badge back and if that happens, I imagine they'll lose the hat altogether. It's nice for casual wear, but doesn't work in court. :P

Phoenix even taking Trucy in in the first place says a lot about him as a person. It was a very depressing time for him, since he had just been disbarred, and being an attorney had been pretty much his whole life up to that point. The natural reaction of a lot of people would probably be to turn kind of selfish and just want to be left alone. But Phoenix wound up with this kid in front of him who had nowhere else to go and whose father had just abandoned her. Many people, going through what Nick had just went through, probably would have wanted to get rid of her as quickly as reasonably possible in order to get back to their own spiral of depression, but Phoenix took her in anyway. Like I said, that says a lot about his character.

Especially since a lesser person might have mentally scapegoated Trucy, since she was the pawn who unwittingly handed him the evidence. Phoenix still sees the truth.

You know I was curious

Spoiler: 4-4 spoilers
With the way Phoenix joked about getting his badge back and everything... What if to keep Apollo as the star still they brought Phoenix back as a prosecutor? Nah it probably wouldn't happen but it'd be interesting to see Phoenix duke it out with Apollo in the courtroom. Besides there shouldn't be any reason why phoenix couldn't do that since Edgeworth changed his view of prosecutors and all.

Even so I guess Phoenix is only meant to be the mentor now.

Spoiler: 4-4
I honestly hope not. I rather see him settle into the mentor role and have them bring in new prosecutors which can be developed over the course of the game. Either that or further develop Klavier as a prosecutor. As mentor, Phoenix would only play a side role anyway similar to Mia's role in the previous three games. The prosecutors tend to take a great deal of the spot light anyways, so putting Phoenix in that position would likely pull more attention from Apollo. I mean the previous three games were mostly about finding out more about Edgeworth, Franziska, and Godot (although I always thought Franziska got a bit gipped in her game as far as development, but there is no doubt that a decent amount of focus was put on her motivations and development as well even if not as much as the other two prosecutors).

I guess Phoenix could be the mentor that doesn't die. But I just thought it'd be interesting if Phoenix came back as a prosecutor in order to help teach Apollo the things Mia, Edgeworth, etc. taught him.

While I despise what they did to him in this game, I for one still love... um... our spikey haired friend. His overall bad-ass style, his destinct cleverness, and his caring for Trucy is great stuff. I can only hope now that his name is cleared he'll take the bar exam again and become an attorney again. It'd be a waste of his talent to sit by and let his sidekick do all the work. That alone could restore the faith in this series.

What I think:
I don't hate Apollo, but, he's a little boy. Sometimes the game act like it tells him: "sit down, kid, let the grown-ups deal with it."
He can't do much by himself and he's got this "cords of steel" which makes him look even more childish.
For his sake I'll say he's really trying and with a little help from us (the players) he can make it.

As for Nick... I'd like to say - enough with the drugs!!! God! This guy keeps staring at me with those wide-out pupils and try to play hallucinatory (sorry if the word doesn't fit I found it on a translation site...) mind games with me. He sticks himself in the most annoying parts of the game, sometimes I really want to hit him. He became arrogant, but, when I need his help the most in the game he's gone!
I really hope He'll get a real job, take a real care of his house and children and stop picking on little kids just because it reminds him of the past!
Oh... and get back to being a lawyer. If Miles can do it so can he.

I'm going to ask that you try to follow thread guidelines please. i did specifically ask for there to be no character bashing in this thread. You don't have to like his character in this game, but I am going to ask that you take the hate elsewhere and pay more attention to thread guidelines in the future. You were certainly not forced to post in a fan thread.

I apologize for snapping at you then and will be happy to explain it better. :) This is a fan thread, which means that its for talking about how much you like a certain character. You are welcome to like and dislike any character you wish, but this type of thread's sole purpose is to express support for the character its focused around (in this case Phoenix). That is what it was intended for and I did specifically lay that out in the first post, but I apologize if it wasn't clear enough. My annoyance at you was not because you weren't fond of Phoenix in this game, but because I specifically stated in the first post that there wasn't to be any character bashing in this thread and so I took offense when you seemingly disregarded the thread guidelines. Does it make more sense now? Once again, I apologize for snapping. :hobohodo:

Personally, i have a theory.
over the 4 games, we've played our first case, with an attorney that knows nothing about law/clonked on the head.
Well, i pretty much think Phoenix forgot a lot durings these 7 years. so im pretty sure he'll be the first case attorney.

Well hey Phoenix was a pretty cheaply dressed lawyer. At least in comparison to probably everyone else in the series. Hobohodou is a pretty badass dresser.

But when you think about it Hobohodou probably has more money than he did when he was a lawyer. I mean heck he never did get paid by his clients after all. One has to wonder what he did to even pay the rent back then considering he was probably almost as worse off as Gumshoe in the financial department.

Let me see if I got it right... I can only participate in the discussion if I've got something good to say. Am I right?

I just want to ask - what if I've got got constructive criticism ? Like saying I think Aphlalo (That's how I call Apollo) is a little childish, but, not saying nick is annoying and that I want to use physical progressive viollence toward him. Is this alright?

(BTW - There's no way you guys could have known it because I'm new at all but, I were really half kidding. But, I promise to be nicer)

Anyway, no hard feeling, right?

(p.s. I had this messege much more well worded, but, the computer deleted it because I weren't in my user... :-( )
p.s 2 - If anything seem like its sarcastic - it's not.

p.s final (promise)

Well, constructive criticism is okay in that its just fine to say what you'd like to see happen with him. Saying "I'd like to see him become a lawyer again" (like you stated in your first post) or anything else along those lines is perfectly fine. It's "I want to hit him" or "He's a drug addict" I wasn't fond of. I'm not trying to limit your opinions as you are more then entitled to them. It's just that there is a thread for ranting about characters you hated or disliked and this just isn't that thread. This thread has an entirely different purpose. And of course there aren't any hard feelings. I do apologize for chewing you out like that. Let's just put this silly misunderstanding behind us. :)
