500? 1,000? 2,000?
If I can read Hiragana and Katakana, and know around 500-1,000 kanji, will I be fine?

"Q. How much Japanese do I need to know to be able to play the Gyakuten Saiban games by myself?

A. A lot.

The Gyakuten Saiban games are very vocabulary-intensive. And the kanji, considering it's on a GBA screen, do not have furigana. You need to know words that aren't normally taught in classes like "murder suspect" and "instant death". Some are easier to learn in the context of the game than others. There are a lot of puns, there are several different dialects and speech patterns, and a lot of slang. No two characters talk the same way and several of them make up words entirely.

You need several YEARS of study in Japanese to be able to understand the games without an aid."
from FAQs

Hmm... based on this... I'd say about 1k.

Actually, I think you should try. It does not have so many kanjis like
those PS2 ADV games.

If you can go through the demo with no big problem,
you will be OK for the rest.

This game indeed has a hard-learning curve on its language,
but I think playing it will only push you to learn Japanese faster.

The GS games use rather few kanji (note that I only know the first three, I don't know if this one has substantially more), I think there are hardly any that aren't Kyouiku (the 1,000 first you learn). If you know the 500 most basic characters, you'll be able to play reasonably fluidly while looking up those that you don't know. However, you'll need quite a large vocabulary and there are often dialects and odd styles of speech that could be confusing.

Don't worry, you probably know more Japanese than most of this board does! Gant Take heart.

A few of the board members and I are writing a GS4 guide for people who can't speak japanese so you can still somewhat enjoy the game through the visuals and match them to the spoilers.

I know about 300 or so kanji, but I was able to more or less fumble my way through GS3 (and so far, GS4) without needing a FAQ.

If you know more than that then you should be fine, I think.
