They're both the same guy. Sure, his character developed over time, but Nick kicks ass either way. Though, I have to say I like Nick as a lawyer, because, to me, it's who he is.

While I enjoy both versions, hobo Phoenix just seems more developed, but I enjoy him completely as a character, in all the games of the series.

sucks. He's just.... stupid. They tried to make him all calm and collected.. it's just stupid. Like letting Apollo run his trial and then just do everything himself. 
And making everything harder for everyone with being vague. Of course it wouldn't be any fun if he wasn't, but it's just stupid. They removed everything that made him so cool in the first games. Anyway, the younger Nick always struck me as the dork. We've all had a younger dorky stage at least once in our lives. He was so cute, and I was sad when he started crying. As he came into the court of law, his naive nature wasn't too bad. He jumped into thinks without thinking and it was kind of fun to see what he could do. As for his older self, he's pretty calm and collected. There isn't much you can do after you lose your dream job... So, I can tell what he's going through.
To me, Phoenix is one person. I don't care about age or 'which Nick was better', I just like that he actually changed as he got older. I like Phoenix no matter what he does, and that's the truth.

no question about it! Like others, I think his inner monologues were the best, the way he got panicky over stuff, and his sarcastic remarks to himself.. in those respects seemed a bit cold at times :(

Hobo Nick has to be next, I think. I was scared when I started seeing all the information coming out when we still knew AJ as GS4. I was sure that they were going to butcher his character completely, but they actually managed to make him really cool. You can tell he's still Phoenix under that hat (I can't stand the fact that he wears it though. Phoenix would NEVER cover his hair). His transition into hobo-dom was far to swift for my tastes, though. When he goes to adopt Trucy in the MASON system, he says something like "All I have left waiting for me is a piano and a deck of cards in a Russian restaurant." Phoenix would NEVER give up that easily. I mean, what the Hell was he studying in college?
Speaking of college, Feenie sucked. I'm sorry. He was a really cute character and all, but they ruined him by naming him Phoenix Wright. Feenie was so totally not Phoenix that he almost destroyed by vision of Lawyer Nick's character.
