Nah, it's a sport of Scottish orgin.
I remember reading a magazine from the early Edwardian era, and it had this whole article introducing the concept of golf to Americans. In fact, I think I have the article somewhere in my library bag. Back then, pretty much only the Scottish knew about it - now, everyone knows about it. Just thought I'd share...

I just had a brilliant idea about this.

If I had the power to make Edgeworth British (as the games' official translator, I mean), I'd sneak in subtle hints in the dialogue--I'd make Edgeworth's text spell out in British English. "Colour, armour."

Well of course. After all, the Scots, Irish and Welsh don't like tea very much. But the English do.

So which are you? England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales? Inside, outside, on the scales?

I usually use "ergo", but very rarely "verily".

That is because it is made of stone! BWAHAHA.

I say verily now and then when I'm being goofy. Ergo is a little rarer but mostly because people generally would say Speak E-N-G-L-I-S-H, that ain't English ya bloody tosser, speak prop-pa.

Or some other mangled midlander rubbish like that. Too many dropped vowels and such down 'ere or up 'ere if you are a Southna.

I occasionally use the word 'Ergo' when I'm writing an essay or something else for school, and I've used the word 'therefore' way too much.

What's wrong with being british? :3
Aside from that, I've used such words before, but that's only 'cause I know them well enough to throw them out when they're relevent - and I'm not even gay. :D

Honestly, I think the real question is WHY does it matter if Edgey's British...since no real nationality is mentioned in the Western games, his nationality is still very much up in the air. He may be an overly posh British-American, or just a generally over-the-top British migratee...after all, they didn't exactly state his father was strictly American either. Without anything solid to really go on, though, it's up to the Player to decide independently.

Maybe he has a faux British accent like the Preps in Bully do? *G*

(My theory is that while the stereotype seems to suit him, I'm going with the idea put forth that he spent a fair amount of time living abroad anyway. I don't think his accent is overly English... just like I don't think the Gavins sound particularly German, either.)

When I think British, I think any one from the UK.
When I think English, when speaking of nationalities, I think of people from England.
This whole England/Great Britain/United Kingdom thing is so confusing.

'Ireland' normally means the Republic of Ireland, which isn't British at all.

Britain is the island England, Scotland and Wales are on, but the United Kingdom is a "sovereign state", according to Wikipedia. I dunno what that means though, a country probably. Ireland's not part of the UK though.

Hope I made sense. :yogi:

Edit-OK, so it's months and months after I posted this, but I just noticed I made 3 very big spelling mistakes, so I decided to correct them hahaha. XD

They way I see it, in the original Japanese version he's meant to be a Japanese guy who's been heavily influenced by "Europe". And the reason I write that in speech marks is because it's the fictional Europe that Japan has in its head; the one where it's basically one big country but there's a place called France where everyone constantly drinks wine and flings roses at their love interests, there's a place called Germany where they dress in fetishistic uniforms and wield whips, there's a place called Britain where babies are suckled on tea rather than milk and everyone lives in a mansion with a butler. They sort of fudge it all together and get this fictional "Europe". And Mitsurugi is influenced by "Europe".

Now, those "European" traits translate as "British" traits to Americans. Thus when localisasing Mitsurugi into Edgeworth, what the Japanese intended as "German", by way of "European", is transformed into "British" as the Americans see it. I guess you could say it's like how people from Osaka are always turned into Texans when the anime/game they're in is localised in the US. Here in England we'd probably turn them into Cornish people.

Teclo, interesting logic but in the Japanese version the von Karmas were Americans, all of that stuff about Europe would be about America instead for that version.

I'm pretty sure that in the Japanese version, Klavier was also from America. Or at least studied there. Something along those lines.

Ah damn it, there goes that theory. It's interesting that they're American in the original version... They all seem to stereotypically "European" (here we go with the speech marks again) and not even remotely like Americans, stereotypically or not. That said, now that I think about it, they're meant to be very highly educated Americans and the accompanying stereotype is that of Americans who act "British". Edgy seems more British because he's more genteel and "cultured" (i.e. drinks tea) but the Capcom USA localisation team found the Von Karmas to be more maniacal and cruel which, stereotypically, fits the Germans rather than the British. All the discipline, gloves and whips... I guess, to the Japanese, the Von Karmas were stereotypically American in that they were bossy and rude, two traits I know the Japanese can attach to Americans when the desire to stereotype occurs.
