This is the official AAI Countdown thread for case 2-3, Turnabout Big Top. Use this thread to chat about the case and its characters, any pairings you drew from it, tell us when the last time you played it was and if your feelings about it have changed, etc.

This is just for fun so if you're not following the countdown exactly or at all you're still very welcome to post.

Might as well fess up, I fell out of the countdown at 1-5 and haven't done 2-1 or 2-2, but I plan on replaying 2-3. Despite how much the fandom hates this case, I can't help but enjoy it. Of course I speed through the first day as quickly as possible, because yikes, what a pain some of that is.

I still really like Acro. Not only does he have probably the most unique motive in the series, it's hard to find anything like it in other mystery stories too. At the end it leaves you with this feeling of, "Was that really the best I could do? Couldn't that all have been avoided somehow?" It's unsettling, which I suppose is why so many people don't like it, but it fills an important spot in the AA universe and sets up Phoenix for a lot of questions going into 2-4.

If only they'd cleaned up the case a little, making it easy to move around, eliminating the fetch questing... Well I'm sure Moe would still kill it for a lot of people, but it'd be a start.

Acro's story was definitely heartbreaking. He seems like the only "villain" (at least one who committed murder) who was truly remorseful about what he did (probably because it was "accidental"), even though he was suffering horribly too. Great moment at the end when he confesses and apologizes to Max.

I enjoyed the other characters, too. Moe was silly as hell, Ben and Trilo were a riot, Max was... fabulous, and Regina was adorable. And all the animals were entertaining as well.

But... I need to comment on all the ick surrounding Regina. Russell Berry, rest his soul, what the hell was he thinking? I'm sure he had his hands full running a circus and raising a kid, but to keep her that sheltered and with a warped sense of reality for that long... he really did her an injustice. If you're telling someone as old as a teenager that people become stars when they die, you're doing something wrong. I'll catch shit for saying this, but for the sake of Regina, it's probably better that Russell did die. I'm sure he was a great guy to everyone else, but he sure as hell wasn't doing Regina any favors, keeping her the way she was.

And speaking of the way she was, it's highly disturbing that both Max and Ben were seriously considering marriage to this girl. It's one thing if it's a mature, responsible sixteen-year-old... but seriously... ew. Ben is thirty-one years old and uses a puppet to hit on a girl half his age who has the maturity of someone a quarter of his age (then again, he does play with puppets...maybe they are closer in mental age). And Max isn't much better desiring to marry someone so childlike, even if they are closer in age. There is hope at the end of the case, though, when Regina gets savagely beaten with the reality stick.

I LOL'ed at the detention center with Max when Phoenix was like, "Did he just call me sweetie?"

I know the case has its share of WTF?! moments, but I still enjoyed it.

I think I'm the only person who likes this case better than all the other ones in JFA. XD

It's one of my favourite cases of all time, the circus background was very unusual and interesting, and I...I just love circuses. <3 It was also nice getting to play a whole case with Maya, since she didn't appear much in the first two cases(and she wouldn't appear much in 2-4 either).

I love the characters in this case. It was so cute when Maya fancied Max, and Phoenix got all jealous. Max was a good defendant, he was funny when he kept creeping Phoenix out. =D Moe was also so funny, especially when he tried to get Phoenix to tell a joke, and even when I got that penalty for pressing him. XD Regina was sweet, and didn't irritate me at all, surprisingly. I felt sorry for Acro, because he just seemed like a genuinely nice guy, even if he did kill someone. I just loved Franziska in this case, but then she's one my favourite characters anyway. Ben and Trilo were the only characters I didn't like much, because they were creepy trying to marry Regina. If they hadn't been doing that, I'd have liked them a lot more.

The actual murder had a good plot, imo, I suspected most of the characters at different points throughout the game, so I honestly didn't know who'd killed Russell. The murder weapon was...different, and so was the whole thing with Max flying and that. And then when you find out all about Bat...it was one of the best bits in the game.

And the music. Oh my god, I love the circus theme, it's one of my favourite AA songs ever. I can't stop listening to it. <3 I liked the other music in the case too, but...that circus theme is the best. I just adore it.

I think that's pretty much all I have to say atm. I might defend it when everyone starts their bitching. XD

This case is one of my least favourites, but it still nearly made me cry at the end. I felt really bad for Acro... And GOD, I hated Regina. I guess it IS Russell's fault that she was so sheltered, but still...

As for the other characters... Max is kinda meh, heavily leaning towards the "AAAAAAARGH" end of the scale, I have a love/hate relationship with Moe and Ben/Trilo... well, I want to hate them, because that whole thing with Regina was CREEPY, but I can't help but like Ben because he's the most masterful jerk EVER. He has issues, yeah, but that makes him interesting. Except for, uh, that creepy proposal.

RANDOM usage of caps LOCK.

...Oh, yeah, forgot to mention: not a single thing about the bust and how people mistook it for Max was plausible. But hey, videogames, relax, etc., etc.

Am I the only one who liked Moe? I didn't mind him so much as Ben and Trilo when cross-examining, the Fresh Prince was classic, and Franziska was enough to kill most of his puns and awful jokes dead. Plus he was really quite sweet in the second part of the case. But Regina. Oh, Regina. I felt so sorry for Acro after he mentioned the sickeningly innocent way she talked to him ("Your brother became a star! Hee hee!") - I know it wasn't even her fault, but that's no reason for EVERYONE in the case to love her. And apparently we were meant to feel sympathetic towards her at the end?
:regina: W-will Acro try to kill me again?
:phoenix: Of course he will!
:sob: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I know that it's bad of me, especially as she didn't actually do anything - it's just all her personality and the way people react to her, which is not her fault. For some reason I still felt at the end of the case that she didn't get it, that she still didn't know she killed Bat and set forth the chain of events that would lead to Acro ending up in jail. Sure, she'll stay next to Bat for "as long as it takes"... but she hasn't taken any sort of punishment for his accident... I don't know, it just feels like I have to blame SOMEONE for this case and Regina, the most-loved character ingame, is a hate magnet...

Still, that is the cool part about this case, the unsatisfied feeling: cross-examining Acro was the most horrible thing to do, alongside that awful part in AJ. The fact that there was no evil insane murderer, just a lot of tragedy...

Uh, anyway. Franziska was GOLDEN in this case, all the annoying witnesses really made me appreciate her whip so much more... her "unintentional" Xanatos Gambit was funny too, although it did annoy me that Edgeworth was just masterminding EVERYTHING behind-the-scenes with his SUPER INFLUENCIAL POWER (although he did kinda rise to "God" status for a part of JFA with all the implied ability, so whatever >_> ). For a lot of the case I was waiting for Regina to take the stand and Franziska to whip her to a thousand sobbing bits as she realized what the real world was like, but it was not to be...

I found Ben and Trilo to be REALLY annoying. At least I could giggle at Moe's unfunniness; Trilo was just a pain. The whole "marriage" sub-plot was unnecessary and infinitely irritating. Max, I liked more - I find it amusing how they mess with different levels of flamboyance in the games (Redd--> Max--> Jean). Plus for some reason I adore his sprites.

Also, a brief mention of Congratulations Everybody Again.

That was it.

By the way, did anyone notice that they played the Global Studios reminiscence theme at the end of this case?

This is one of those cases. One of the cases who makes me feel all nostalgic just thinking about them. In fact, the same thing could be said about JFA as a game - it has something that AA1, 3 and 4 just... don't.

Back to 2-3, I'm one of the few people who really enjoyed it. It was heartbreaking, heartwarming, fun and really challenging as well. The plot is pretty absurd but I think that was intentional - the judge even says that the case is like circus itself when it's over.

It also made me like Franziska. In 2-2 she was a bitch but she got at least some character development in 2-3. Plus, although I saw the "Edgeworth is alive" twist coming, it still made me go all "OMG IT'S EDGEY". A nice reward for a nice case.

Also...
Spoiler:
Congratulations Everybody, Again! is fucking awesome.

I don't really like it for two reasons:
1) Don't like Acro. I don't find, "You put my brother into a coma by accident and your father raised you to be an idiot so you must die!!!" I'm sorry, but regardless of what happened to him and Bat, murder is never an appropriate course of action. I hope in his trial he gets tried for both murder and attempted murder, since Regina was his intended victim. (No sympathy from me, b/c of the way he acted.)
2) The entire thing, from start to finish, was one giant coincidence. I just didn't like the case being that way. (I know there were coincidences in other cases, like Lotta having a camera in 1-4 or Glen winning in 3-3, but this case just had way too many that affected way too much.)

I will save my giant rant for 2-4. (Get ready!)

I am certainly with the minority when I say that I really enjoyed the case. Trilo and Ben always made me laugh, and Max's real identity did as well. I felt bad for Acro and the victim, whose name escapes me at the moment. Mr. Berry certianly didn't deserve what he got, one of the few accidental deaths in PW. Acro actually felt bad about what happened (and I think he still would've if he had hit the target he wanted) which made him a likable character to me.
The flamboyance Max and Regina had was also a fun aspect of the case IMO, and I could sort of sympathize with Regina by the end of the case.

And yes, I also liked Moe. I thought he was more than just bad jokes and a not-so-good job as a clown that nobody wanted to see anymore.

After playing through this again, I don't hate it as much as I did, but it's still one of my least favorite cases in the series. I thought the whole idea with a murder taking place at a circus was a bit ridiculous, but it wasn't all that bad, however.

The characters did annoy me here, especially Regina, Moe, and Trillo. Max, Ben and Acro didn't bother me and the regulars acted the same as usual. It was nice to see Franny whip some sense into Moe for his lame jokes XD

The case itself was quite insane. I honestly couldn't guess who'd really done it; At first I thought Ben did it, then Moe, and finally, when they revealed Acro, I figured he'd be it. The way he did the murder was so unexpected I was like "WTF?" His breakdown I have to admit is the saddest out of all of them and I actually felt kinda bad for him...

I honestly couldn't think of much to say for this case, so I'll just give my grade now: C-. To me, it was tolerable but it ended up being one of my least favorite case in the series.

For me, the biggest problem with this case is the pacing. It really feels like it drags on in the investigations and the first day of court and that you're not figuring anything out. When you finally get to the final day of court, Moe and Phoenix just hand you the killer without any reason and tell you to go for him. The last day of court is pretty enjoyable though and I liked getting all the wrong responses this time around as they amused me.

Moe is my favorite character in this case, as his silliness amuses me (even if his jokes don't). And his obnoxious cross examination added an interesting twist to an otherwise dull series of contradictions.

I do like the prevalent circus theme, and how each cross examination is geared towards the witness' role in the circus. Ben and Trilo work the crowd, Moe fails miserably and you have to stop him from making jokes, and against Acro you teeter on a metaphorical tightrope with a criminal who can't be shaken. It's a neat theme.

All around though, this is my least favorite case in the series. I don't hate it, but I kept getting bored or distracted as I was playing it today.

Not at all! I really liked Moe, especially the second day when he revealed he actually had a clue what was going on. It was such a great shock going into court when Phoenix says, "I'm going to try to get the murderer today," and Moe calmly replies, "You mean Acro?" Of course by then we all know it's Acro, but it feels like Moe steps up (especially in addition to bringing Regina to court) and that simple exchange is one of my favorite moments in the series.

Absolutely. And Moe gets a gold star simply for having the balls to undo the damage Russell did to Regina (even if the damage was unintentional).

I finished 2-3 about an hour ago for the second time, so here is my review.

While it is still my least favourite case of the series, I really enjoyed playing it again this time. Most likely, it was because I could criticise it here however, this time through, I picked up on the little subtle hints throughout the game.

2-3 introduced one of my favourite characters; Maximillion Galactica. He was an awesome character. I was sad to see this was his only case. Maybe he will appear in GS5 or some fan games? Ignoring that, the introduction to this case was rather splendid. I really loved the graphics of the introduction. It was..simply fantastic :karma:

Although the plot and this being an obvious filler case was a big let down, I still enjoyed it a lot. We saw more of Franziska in this as well as her nasty deeds such as tracking Gumshoe via those remote bugs. It was also shown subtlety that she was trying too hard to live up to her father's name. Still, I enjoyed playing against her in court.

I think the most memorable mention in this case is the finale when we see Edgeworth. I squealed was in shock when we saw Edgeworth returning to California/Los Angeles or wherever it takes place.

Now, I played 2-4 the other week, so it is still fresh on my mind, so when it is time to review, expect a long, detailed one!

Oh, forgot one point. This case didn't have much Maya (in terms of the dialogue) in it which was good for me. Of course, 2-4's much better...

I don't dislike it because it's unsettling or the fact that the murderer is "a good guy"; but for possibly the weirdest murder in the games (until maybe 4-3, which holds in my opinion the award for worst case ever made). The whole statue snagging the cape to make it look like a floating Max and Acro not checking outside the window at all, after which he would've basically murdered Max by not fessing up? Sorry, I can't believe that. Even for AA, that's far-fetched.

The most disliked case in this fandom, far beyond anything done in 4-3. The consensus on that case seems to be that the case would have been better if there weren't so many "omg obvious" loopholes with the motive, witness, set up, and sheer bollocks of the prosecution's attack. But, a lot of AA scrubs just plain hate 2-3 for a lot of reasons; the murder set up, the murderer's motives, and the characters, especially Moe.

But, I liked Moe. He's a pretty cool guy in my book for a few reasons:

A) He's aware that no one thinks he's funny but he loves performing for them in spite of it. I admire him for his dedication to his profession.
B) He's so misunderstood (though I guess part of that could be contributed by his comedic attitude) and gets a lot of flak for speaking the truth.
C) I love bad jokes, especially the lines Moe drops.
D) He's a really mature guy despite his clowning shinanegans. He loves bringing smiles to people's faces but he doesn't shirk his responsibility of running the BBC after Russel's death.

Basically, I'm sold on this case just because of Moe. He brings a sense of humor to the case that isn't found anywhere else in the series outside of popular culture gags.

Other than that, I think it's a pretty "blah" case. 2-4 rocked my socks of, though.

Oh, two more complaints I have. Not as big as the other two, but I still want to bring them up...
1) I thought the bottle/"I said good evening" contradiction was the worst in the series. I mean seriously... he's objecting to common courtesy.
2) The final optional present makes no sense. How come now the fact Bat is in a coma will cause Acro not to want to kill Regina, while he's been in a coma the entire time? Nothing has changed with Bat's position, so why should anything change with Acro?

(I liked Moe :3 He's music was horrible, but Moe was cool.)

They explained that Acro couldn't lean out the window because of his chair, which is why he had to go to such elaborate measures to kill Russel in the first place. And I'm not sure what's far-fetched about a murderer not wanting to be caught. It was cruel to keep quiet and try to let Max take the fall but it's not like it was out of character.

The only really "far-fetched" part of the case is the cape getting stuck, but that's not even like a miracle of physics or anything. Certainly not as far fetched as Gant carrying a bleeding corpse out of the police department without a single witness. :eh?:

I honestly don't mind anything about the crime itself and how it turns out to have gone. I think it's pretty creative! It's just the way this case is presented in its tedious opening half and then the all at once closure.

Also, @Bad Player: Phoenix was presenting Bat's profile in response to Regina's question of what Acro meant when he said he had a reason that he couldn't let go and confess or kill himself like he had contemplated once he realized who he'd actually killed. Regina interpreted this to mean that Acro still wanted her dead. Phoenix was explaining that he couldn't abandon Bat and that's why he let Max take the blame.

I agree. Trilo's cross-examination was awful - it dragged on so long and in the end it wasn't even that relevant.

After finishing it again, I have decided, this case does NOT deserve teh h8. Its at least my second favorite case in Justice For All. I don't know how you all can get so worked up over a bunch of pixels. I admit though, that even though I love, love, love, Ben and Trilo, they did seem very filler and unimportant :/ I also admit that the whole cape snagged blah blah was a bit farfectched, but y'know sometimes truth is stranger than ficton. Eh, its hard for me to think right now, but this case is awesome and all the characters were awesome too.

I started 2-4 ahead of time, :/ but I really didn't do much. I hope I can finish that case on time...

This is the most underrated case by far.

Does it really matter if it was all a coincidence? It made the case harder. As did the annoying characters you had to deal with. And this case did have quite a few too many annoying characters between Regina's unbearable obliviousness to Max's pointless lines about fabulous things. And no. Moe is NOT included in that. Moe was hilarious. His corny jokes are the kind you expect from a lame circus clown. And he makes it better with his amazing animations and how he was the only character with a clue about the outside world.

I greatly respect this case, even if it does have two of the most annoying characters.

My second least favorite case has managed to finally redeem itself and become mildly likeable.

I've always loved the circus, so I was majorly excited by this case, now it seems silly that I ever hated it in the first place. But I do have a reason.

MOE. Moe's jokes were actually so unfunny that I liked him a lot, I began to see myself in him, I admired him. UNTIL I had to cross-examine him. Unfortunately, I happened to be looking away when the judge mentioned a possible risk for pressing him. By this time, I had developed the strategy of pressing every single statement to realize the answer. Pressing Moe's second statement got me the penalty that shredded my opinion on Moe and this case. You see, I was getting a bit too confident with these games and decided to try to not save at all even when prompted to. Which meant that Moe dealt the final penalty which made me have to start all over again. ALL FOR A POOP JOKE. I actually wanted him to be guilty and disliked this case as soon as it became clear that Acro was the killer. Now I've begun to start to like his jokes again if I don't understand them, other people's opinion on this thread has renewed my interest in this case and made it enjoyable once more.

Besides Max and Acro, the rest of the characters were appealing to me. Ben's split personality being reflected into Trilo reminded me of myself when I used to have conversations with things like my toilet or my refrigerator and they'd sometimes insult me. Regina was also a reflection of myself in that she used to be sheltered and that she cried and sobbed when she became unsheltered.

I used to not like Acro because he made Moe not be the killer, now I just hate him because he looks like he's on steroids. As for Max, he still creeps me out. During his Psyche-Locks thing, you could look at his lower body and think he wasn't wearing any pants. :P

In short, Moe is now awesome, Ben and Trilo and Regina are still awesome, and Acro and Max were never awesome.

Uh, your toilet used to insult you? I...I'm not too sure what to say.

Reading over this thread, more people actually like this case then I thought. :maya:

You made my day Yaragorm with such a funny 'review' of 2-3. I disagree though- Max was awesome. But Acro sucks which is true. Haha, that joke wasn't very funny. I got it but I only had incurred one penalty earlier in the trial.

Another thing I discovered that was funny, Maya thought the ringmaster was metrosexual. :P

It was really awkward when she just said it out of the blue like that.

Maya does have random lines like that. Like in 1-4 when she said Oldbag had balls, or in 3-2, where she had one or two unusually bitchy lines directed at Phoenix (or maybe they just seemed bitchy compared to the rest of the time).

What bitchy lines did she have in 3-2 again? One of them was something to do with his photo, yeah? :ini:

I forgot to mentioned Edgeworth in my last review. Oh my god, that was one of the best bits ever. I didn't have a clue who Edgeworth was when they kept going on about him during the game, so finally getting to see him was a real 'wtf moment' for me. I love him. <3

That was one of them. I think there was a bitchy line she said during a cross-examination after all the lines you are able to press, but I'll have to play the case again to see what it was.

Another one had to do with the first encounter with Adrian. IIRC they start talking about 2-4 in terms of "that case" and Maya asks what they're talking about. Phoenix then says the Nickel Samurai case, and asks if Maya remembers it, and Maya says something like, "Not really, but then again, I was locked up in a cellar. Did that escape your mind?" Well, I guess it'd be bitchier depending on her tone.
