This is definatly one of my favorite cases. The cases does an exceptionnaly well job of keeping suspense active throughout the game by Maya's kidnapping. Edgeworth's sudden return, Mrs. Von Karma being shot (I was prasing god the moment I read it.), Edgeworth being the prosecutor, (I was glad that he was alive, but I cursed my luck anyway), and It's ending. This case is a 10/10 for me

This is definitely the worst case in the series, IMO. I knew Maya was on the boxart of T&T, so I knew she survived and was okay, which ruined that suspense. That wasn't JFA's fault, but it was still not that great. However, everything else was JFA's fault. Edgey coming back wasn't a surprise (even at the end of 2-3) b/c of the boxart. Also, the big twists were all said early in the game with extremely heavy-handed foreshadowing... Matt being the killer, Adrian being innocent but framing Matt. So when we found that out, it was very anticlimactic and unexicting for me. I'm also annoyed that we didn't get to break Oldbag's giant psyche-lock.

Anyway, I'm going to stop now.

...Franzy's character development at the very end was nice.

This case MADE GS2. The theme of "what it means to be a defense attorney" is explored in a very gripping manner, what with the kidnapping and all. Edgeworth's stunning return to the courtroom was also a high point for me ('cuz I really don't like Franziska in this game). Many memorable moments in this case, but my top four have to be Matt Engarde revealing himself (you know that animation), the stark choice of "guilty vs. not guilty" (without the ability to save!), only to be dramatically interrupted by Franziska, the "bad ending" you get if you present wrong evidence at the very end (it nearly breaks my heart even now! :sadshoe:), and Engarde's breakdown ( :beef: ).

Oh, wait, how could I forget? One of THE greatest moments in the series: Phoenix asks De Killer how much his fee is.

Judge:
You want to kill me...
You want me dead...
DON'T YOU!?!?

Phoenix:
Whaaaat!?
Why would you think something
like that, Your Hon--

Judge:
Guilty! MR. PHOENIX WRIGHT!
You are hereby declared
GUILTY!!

Edgeworth:
...Witness.
Let's continue...

This was the first case that really frustrated me. (The other one being 3-2)
On the other hand it had freaking awesome characters like Adrian, but it was loooong and the last moments were really dragged in my opinion.
The other frustrating aspect was Matt. He was insanely hot, especially the "real Matt", but too much of a douchebag to be really likeable. At least it was interesting that Phoenix had to defend someone who really was an a-hole. :D

I saw the bad ending first, and it was so utterly depressing that I would've probably smashed my DS to the opposite wall if I didn't immediately go back for the good ending.

All in all, the best thing in this case was Shoe. And Franziska getting molested by Hotti. I'm a bad, bad person but it made me chuckle. :hotti:

I played this last week when I finished 2-1 because I felt like it, so it's still on my mind. Let's see...

Farewell, My Turnabout to me was actually okay. I first detested it but playing through it a second time, I appreciated some of the finer details in the case. Although, it comes in second to last on my most hated cases...

I thought the plot was great. Maya being kidnapped was the best thing the writers thought of. It was a spin on the 'Maya is in danger' plot. I personally thought Morgan Fey was working with Shelly de Killer but was disappointed when I found out she wasn't apart of that case. The plot was good because we got to have a lot of Pearl as our co-council and in the investigation.

I thought the characters introduced were good. I didn't like Adrian at first, but later on, I started to like her. I really liked Matt- he was very convincing and managed to trick Phoenix into thinking he was not guilty because he believed that he did not kill Juan. I thought Juan and his alter ego 'The Jammin Ninja' was pathetic. I still don't understand what was so popular about a ninja playing a guitar...

When we saw Lotta again for the second time, I was happy but then disappointed when Oldbag was brought back. I don't mind Oldbag but she is such an annoying character. I had enough of her by the end of 1-3.

Now de killer, or John Doe. He was a perfect portrayal of an assassin. I wish that he will make an appearance in GS5.

I didn't draw any pairings from it. I'm not a fan of Franziska/Adrian so I didn't see the connection. I just saw Franziska being her manipulative self.

The return of Edgeworth was something I enjoyed. Phoenix's response to him was perfect as it fit what had happened in the game so far. I liked seeing Edgeworth being helpful and friendly, rather than his cold self.

However, my favourite moment in the game had to be the ending with Franziska at the airport. Not only do I love the ending theme as well as Prosecutor's Murmur, I liked it when Franziska fell apart at the end and revealed that as a von Karma, she had to be as great as her father. It was good to hear that as Franziska climbed higher on my favourite characters list because of that.

In conclusion, I wouldn't play this case again. There were too many bad points about it, such as how long it dragged on for and the shoddy testimonies and contradictions. It still remains on my worst case lists but playing it a second time, it was slightly better, so I raised to no.2 instead of 1 (which is 4-3).

Such a brilliant case. It has always been my favorite and I think it always will be. No other case has moved me, terrified me, surprised me, or excited me anywhere near as much as this one has.

And the best part is that I never get tired of it. Regardless of how many times I play this case, the emotions are all still there. I just can't help but cheer when Edgeworth show up, or when Franziska bursts through the door at the darkest hour. Even what plot twists I could have predicted (and it's been so long now that I don't remember what truly surprised me and what I saw coming) still had their effect. I get so involved with the characters and the events that I really lose any meta knowledge I might have and just feel what they are feeling.

The pacing is fantastic, the characters are great, with Shelly's complete evil following a set of rules and Matt's insane self-centered cruelty hidden behind a mask of innocence.

The case really delves deep into Phoenix's motivations; his absolute morality and conviction of what is right and wrong in being a lawyer comes into direct conflict with his need to protect Maya. And the way that plays out with Gumshoe and Edgeworth helping him as much as they can, but still forcing Phoenix to make some hard decisions is pure genius.

So in the end, not the best mystery but by far the best story.

This case definitely hooked me on the first play, and to this day remains one of my favorite cases, if not my favorite.

It was nice seeing Will Powers and Lotta Hart again, especially in different roles--Will as a witness and not a defendant, Lotta as... well, as NOT a court witness. Wendy Oldbag... well, hers was an interesting return.

Pearl was adorable as usual, and you wanted to give her a hug every time she worried about Maya.

Maya being kidnapped was a bit of a shock, and of course, I was freaked out for her and sad for Pearl and Phoenix. I did enjoy the occasional POV switch--it was the first time you got to play from someone else's perspective. I mean, actually move around and not simply witness a scene between two people.

I thought Gumshoe's initial reaction to Maya being kidnapped was touching, even though he is a detective and that type of work is up his alley anyway. It was great having Gumshoe as an ally even when things seemed hopeless, even when he lost his job, and even when all of his work culminated in a car accident. That's amazing dedication right there. Extra gold stars for Gumshoe... or maybe just extra gold blocks so that he can afford to pay his light bill and have a non-starch dominant meal that's actually edible.

I anticipated Edgeworth's return after 2-3, so I was definitely excited when he finally showed up. I'd expected Phoenix's reaction too, so I wasn't surprised at the initial "OMG U WER DED 2 ME" attitude he displayed for 3/4 of the case. I was, however, quite stunned by the change in Edgeworth. Obviously, at first, he seemed a bit smug, but eventually he just came off as someone who was just really amused at life...or at least, at the courtroom. At first, I just kind of brushed off some of the things he was saying, but later, I realized just how true he was being to the things he said. If there was a poster boy for "practice what you preach," he would be it. Seriously. This was the case that changed my opinion of the guy forever.

I was a bit shocked when Franziska got shot; I had expected Edgeworth to remain only as an "ally" and not take over the case (though it was great having him in the courtroom). Her entrance in the courtroom on the second day was epic, and there was a nice bit of character development with her at the end. She claimed to hate Edgeworth and often referred to him as "little brother," but it became obvious just how important of a person he was in her life.

And of course... my namesake, Ms. Adrian Andrews. Total cold fish the first time I saw her, looking down her damn nose at me. The size and depth of her secret was shocking, though I could see how she could spend so much energy trying to hide it. You couldn't help but feel bad for her. All she was trying to do was to preserve the honor of a very good friend, and she ended up getting tangled in Matt and Juan's insane little war. Of course, it doesn't excuse her tampering with the crime scene. But all she wanted was for someone to know what a murdering little bastard Matt was. Fortunately for her, Phoenix and Edgeworth were listening. Adrian had been so scared of everything, and believing that the world basically didn't care about nice people, so it was great seeing her light up at the end there. She went from being a "codependent" person with a borrowed personality to someone who had genuine faith in herself and in others.

Matt was someone else I was shocked at. The roles he and his manager initially showed couldn't be further from the truth. Matt wasn't some innocent, brainless actor dude who was controlled by Adrian. He was someone with a strange split personality, and he was GUILTY! That was certainly a first. That scenario, "What if Matt is guilty?" was presented to the player multiple times from the get-go. I honestly didn't expect him to be. Oh, and... Matt was a dick, for screwing over Celeste more than once, and getting Juan killed.

Can't say much about Juan. Sorry he died, but he was still a dick for choosing his ego over his and Celeste's happiness.

Can't say much about Celeste, either. I asked this question before, but... if Adrian was considered to be copying Celeste's behavior, and Adrian was acting like a total bitch... then what the hell was Celeste like? Adrian says she was kind, though I'm sure she was speaking of her decision to leave Global Studios without a huge stink, instead of dumping all over Matt's "refreshing like a spring breeze" image, once Matt threw her away.

Shelly de Killer... interesting guy. Wouldn't want to piss him off... or anyone who knows him.

I almost freaked that first day when the judge dismissed the court before Phoenix could get the 'not guilty' verdict. But after a moment, I figured it didn't mean the end for Maya.

And then that second day (same day after first court day?), I almost BAWWW'd when Maya left that note, and you realized she knew Matt was guilty, too.

The little exchanges and stalling in court were pretty entertaining as well, and added some much needed humor to all the drama and suspense. I enjoyed the mirrors between 1-5 and 2-4 (though technically, 2-4 came first), where the defense underwent a great deal of criticism from the audience, much like the prosecution in 1-5 (though I suppose in the prosecution's case, it was far worse). And of course, Phoenix with his moral dilemmas. Using dirty tricks, but not simply to win the case. It was a small mirror of Edgeworth in AA, and of Franziska in JFA, except their reason for using dirty tricks was for personal victory.

All in all, excellent case.

Yup still my favorite case (though there's one in GK that tried to creep up on it).

I'll admit I was never worried for Maya--the thought that something bad might *actually* happen to her crossed my mind, but instead of killing the suspense I was just happy not to have her around for a while, lol. Even more thrilling was Mia not having all the answers. For once she's just as much in the dark as everyone else!

Will was a nice return, but I could have done without Lotta and Oldbag back (especially since Lotta was already in 2-2). The case's new characters, Adrian Matt and de Killer, were all a lot of fun and each fill a unique space in the AA world, especially with Matt being the only "guilty" client to date. First time through I was really surprised the game was willing to go there with the suicide angle (though I guess I shouldn't have been, considering 2-3), and even though I'm not the biggest fan of de Killer it is nice to know he's still out running around, an ever-ready plot device.

But the real attraction of 2-4 for me is, of course, Edgeworth and Phoenix. Especially after having played the first cases recently, seeing Edgeworth being a truly competant figure in the courtroom is a real treat, in contrast to him being a narrow-minded jackass. I love how the advantage switches between him and Phoenix throughout the case. It's also great to see Phoenix take the case so personally. I like seeing his temper, since it rarely shows up.

And then there's the slash :3 As much as I liked Phoenix/Edgeworth in the first game, I enjoy the pairing so much more with Edgeworth 2.0.

As for Franziska...I never really liked her anyway, so her "development" at the end didn't feel all that surprising or interesting to me. It just revealed that she's every bit the child she acts like in court. I still think it would be nice if they did do GK2 with her just so we could see a more complete view of her.

I love this case. It's super tense without going overboard with the melodrama like parts of the third game. Watching Phoenix coping with so much at once, and seeing how the other characters supported him made for some really wonderful development. It's kind of sweet and sad that Nick doesn't see himself as having many friends, but he's got this whole big family of people he's helped that want to bend over backwards for him in their own weird ways.

The first time I played through, my brother (who had played through it first) told me "call me when you get to the part where you say 'holy shit' out loud." I started the case knowing that there must be some kind of twist in it, but I was worried it wouldn't have the same impact for me and I wouldn't know it when it happened. I called him when Maya got kidnapped, and he said to keep playing.

Then, sure enough, Matt revealed himself and I said "Holy shit" at my DS, without even thinking about it. What an absolutely awesome moment.

One of my favourite cases.

If you think of it as a mystery, it doesn't work, because it's too predictable. If you were expecting something like 1-4, you had to be disappointed.
But this case is not a mystery. It's a thriller - which makes it completely unique in the series. Even though 3-5 has some elements of thriller, it's lots of other things too ; this case, on the other hand, mostly plays like a great action/suspense movie, with lives in danger and the clock always ticking.

But it's even better than an action movie, because you really get the feeling that the outcome depends on what you choose. The protagonist is not the only one facing a dilemma: you, the player, are too. Who are you going to save? If there's a third option, what will it be?

Sure, it was easy to know Matt was the killer long before he was revealed.
But:
1) it's the same in all AA cases, except maybe 3-5 and 4-1...
2) it's even better when you know it beforehand, because you're anticipating it and thinking about what consequences it may have. The writers understood this, hence the "heavy-handed" foreshadowing. Even if they didn't, they unintentionally made it better that way.
3) the scene of the reveal, however over-the-top it may be, has to be one of the most memorable in the entire series. Seriously, who doesn't remember that scene?

I hate arguing you with you, Frenchy, but I suppose if you quote me I have no choice but to retaliate:
1) von Karma being the mastermind in 1-4 was interesting :P
2) Not to me. I knew Maya would be okay, which took away the thrill, and then when they told me in the first five minutes, "Matt hired de/the Killer and Adrian forged evidence to frame him" in the first five minutes, then that takes away the mystery, too.
3) ...I don't really remember it >_> Probably b/c my reaction wasn't "Whoa!" but "It's about time, let's just get this over with so I can finish this stupid case." When your first conversation with Matt heavily implies he's guilty, finding out he's guilty wasn't a surprise. (How shocked were you to find out Redd was guilty in 1-2?)

But that's still like...every case. I don't think you can fault 2-4 as a case for hinting Matt is guilty ahead of time when several cases outright *show* you the killer in their opening sequence. It's just kind of the way AA is. They always treat the "how" as more important than the "who."

It's not that people were shocked to see Matt guilty, the shock is him turning out to be freaking nuts. :gregory:

1) To quote an article from TVTropes: he might as well have "evil" stamped on his forehead =)
Honestly, even in the lobby scene before you actually met him, I knew he would be guilty of every crime imaginable that would ever be mentioned in this case. That doesn't take away the fact that he's a great villain, and that 1-4 is one of the (if not the) best cases in the series (on that we agree :p).
2) I imagine that already knowing about Maya must have spoiled it a lot. I naively thought they might actually kill her - since they'd already done it with Mia.
3) But Redd White wasn't Phoenix's client. And finding out he was guilty didn't mean you had to choose between a) saving the life of an innocent woman you knew and b) saving the life of another innocent woman you didn't know, all the while bringing a criminal to justice. (Plus I was shocked about finding out Redd White was guilty! I thought it was too obvious.)

1) Mmm, it was pretty obvious Yanni was the one who actually did it (since in AA it's always the last person you meet :P) but I didn't expect that von Karma would be the mastermind. (I thought that Edgey might have actually been the killer in DL-6, but after Phoenix was so insistent that Edgey was innocent, I figured that the only one it could be was von Karma, somehow.) Hm, kinda off-topic now...
2) I figured they wouldn't kill her because they had already done it with Mia. After all, then we wouldn't have Mia any more. (I know there's still Pearl, but I didn't think they'd kill off Maya and have Pearl replace her because (1) Pearl is only 8, (2) Pearl is in training, (3) for some reason the Morgan thing made me think she wouldn't, and (4) if Pearl did replace Maya, I figured it would be Pearl's, not Maya's, picture on the boxart.)
3) I said that thing about Redd because it was extremely obvious that he was the killer, as it was with Matt. So just as when I got confirmation in 1-2 that Redd was the killer, it didn't surprise me b/c they showed you it was him in the opening scene, when I got confirmation in 2-4 that Matt was guilty I didn't have any sort of big reaction. (1-2 was only the second case, and they showed him killing Mia in the beginning! How subtle and nonobvious did you think it would be? Perhaps 1-4 (apparently) or 3-3 would have been more apt. Oh well...) Knowing Maya would be okay also ruined the choice for me--I figured, in order to run contiguously with the following game, either decision had to end up at the same place. (Plus, I just went with killing Maya, since I knew she would be okay. I also figured that picking guilty or not guilty would end up in a "game over", because it was a personal decision, not some sort of deductive puzzle like in 1-5 or after that choice in 2-4.)

This was definitely the best case in JFA and one of the best out of the whole series imo. It had a very intense feel to it and Maya getting kidnapped added to that.

The case itself was quite mysterious and the whole time I kept guessing who the real killer could've been. For a while I was sure Adrian was the one that did it, but when Matt showed his true colors, I was like "WTF? So our client REALLY IS the killer?!" That really blew my mind. And Shelly De Killer was badass.

All the characters here were pretty good, most of them being characters from 'Turnabout Samurai', who retain their personalities, as well as the newcomers Adrian, Matt and Shelly, who were all really well done.

It really was a great way to end the game and it's definately worth playing through JFA just for this case... And maybe 'Reunion & Turnabout'.

Grade- A. I was hooked the whole way and I was wondering what was going to happen next the whole time. If you want a case that'll really blow your mind, play this one... That is, until you get to T&T ;)

Okay wow, I love how the majority loves this case <3 I totally disagree with Bad Player on this. Yeah sure the shock is a little gone, but still. I mean, I spoiled the ending of a certain video game for myself before I was even halfway done. Nonetheless when I finished the game. It STILL affected me. Strongly. idk

I personally found it a bit shocking when Engarde revealed himself as the killer, even though I knew he was the big bad. He was just presented so magnificently.

Also Will/Adrian is so my otp and I don't care what you think >___>

Ah, this my second favourite case in the whole series. <3 Why? One word: SHOE!

Even if Shoe hadn't been in there, this would still be at the top of list for favourite cases. I mean, seriously, Maya gets kidnapped by a bad-ass assassin, Edgeworth makes an epic return with epic music to go with it, your client is guilty for once, tragic backstory, AND it involves my favourite paring: Pearl/Shoe. Ayup, very epic.

Ah, my favorite case. So good, I finished it a day early.

I love how the name of this case is 'Farewell My Turnabout' I just realized how it refers to the fact that technically this case has no 'Turnabout'. The main Turnabout of every case is that the defendant is not guilty, but this is true in every other case and that makes it not a Turnabout, resulting in this case being a Super Turnabout because the defendant actually is guilty when by now we would expect him to be innocent. I know I'm being confusing, but I hope you see my point.

Maya being kidnapped came as a shock to me. The idea left such a big impact on me that I spent most of the time wandering around aimlessly not knowing what to do. I also like this case because it was fun to play as Maya a little bit and it was also fun to have Pearl be the only one following you around.

Matt Engarde reminded me of myself at first. Saying 'dude' a lot, being slightly clueless, and even following the orders of a "manager". Even when he showed his true self, I still felt I could relate to him. Many people say that I have Multiple Personality Disorder referring to when I show eviler tendencies than most would think. He even has a cat. I had a cat when I was playing this case...

Adrian first reminded me of "her" being all bossy and controlling and stuff like that. I thought she was the killer even though I really didn't her to be. When her co-dependance was revealed, I felt even more similarity between me and her than with Engarde. I tend to not be able to do anything by myself and usually require someone else's help for things I'm not good with. Like this case. >.<

Oldbag. I'm glad this was her last appearance. The Space Alien thing was a nice twist. I was actually glad to see her in this case because I thought that Franziska would be the prosecutor and she would finally be able to teach that Old Bag a lesson. But no, Edgeworth comes in and crushes my dreams. To this day I still wonder what Franziska's reaction to Oldbag would be...

Like I said earlier, Edgeworth lost all of the respect he gained in 1-5 from this case. He was brutally mean to Adrian, which I could never forgive for a long time. Although I did like how he changed to some extent and how he helped Phoenix a lot with this case. But when I saw him at the end of 2-3, I thought this case would be about Edgeworth being the victim and that was a little disappointing...

Powers didn't really change much, the only thing worth noting is that his suit is awesome and that the Eccentric theme played for him. Lotta also did not change in my mind.

Shelly de Killer was quite entertaining, I did find the whole 'honorable assassin' thing a bit weird but it didn't seem all that unusual to me for some reason. Cross-examining the radio thing was just as fun as cross-examining Polly except longer, harder, and more interesting.

I must admit, I was a little disappointed to find out that the final case was not about Morgan or Kurain channeling. But that's all in the past now.

The part at the end with Franziska did surprise me a little, but I was focusing more on her shoulders and arms than her teary whining when she cracked.

Overall I liked this case, it was a little disappointing but it was also very dramatic and much more smooth than the final cases from the first game. The thing I liked most about this case was that the first day of court was on March 22nd (The day Pokemon Platinum came out).

"How do you do... Mister Lawyer? I'm Matt Engarde."

My favorite case ever ever EVER!

JFA was my first game so I had never experienced epic cases like 1-4 or 1-5 before this. And boy was I unprepared. By the last court day I was freaking glued to my DS. I even sat on the floor and kept playing it while it was charging. XD I remember my jaw literally dropping at Matt's reveal.

I wasn't going to follow that countdown thing becuase I can't find my T&T game card anywhere, but I do have JFA~ *skips off to her DS*

ARGH THIS CASE IS MAKING ME FALL BEHIND.

Right then. Having played JFA last in the series I was already pretty spoiled on quite a lot of things: I could eliminate Adrian as a suspect, which pretty much only left Engarde. I also knew Maya was abducted, so at the ve~ery beginning of the case I quickly to the conclusion that Engarde was a psychotic murderer. I also couldn't really feel too sad for Celeste, because whenever the reminiscence theme played all I could think was I KNOW THIS SONG, WHAT'S THIS SONG? Also given that most of the backstory was laid out for you by Edgeworth about fifteen minutes in. On the replay I sympathised with Adrian so much more, and her cross-examination was really fun, especially when Edgeworth and her started mocking you together.

I found Edgeworth to be pretty annoying in this case - he's great in court, sure, but he seemed to temporarily take over the irritatingly patronizing role of mentor that Mia had occupied for so long and the fact that he knew pretty much everything that was going on in the case really bugged me. Especially when he kept on saying something along the lines about how Phoenix didn't understand anything yet, which got on my nerves in particular because I'd worked out Engarde was the killer, I was just waiting for Phoenix to catch on! Then again, it's not like Phoenix was being at his most mature throughout this case either. It got a lot more bearable in the final court day where I could feel we were standing on equal ground, and there were some pretty golden exchanges, my favourite of going along the lines of:

:edgeworth: : *insert argument here*
:radio: : Strange...Why hasn't the attorney objected to this outrageous accusation?
:phoenix: : Oh...!
:objection:
Mr. Edgeworth! I'm surprised! You know you can't say things like that without evidence!
:edgeworth: : Ah...Sorry.

I just realized that I've been pretty negative this entire essay post, so I should mention at this point that I do love this case, and everything I haven't mentioned is fantastic. Which is why I should probably mention the first day of investigation and the first half-day of court, because although Psyche-Locks Central was fun for a while, I couldn't help but feel that whole part with Oldbag and Lotta's camera was unnecessary and irritating and it felt like they were just trying to extend the case and pump more characters/cameos into it.

I adored Franzy this entire case: I couldn't help "d'awww"ing whenever Edgeworth came out and stole her thunder/case/victory/line/whatever. And she finally got her shining moment, which was nice. And that scene with her at the hospital was just brilliant.

OH YEAH. AND I LOVE DE KILLER.

Well, to be fair, if Edgeworth hadn't been such a dick, the trial would've dragged out longer than needed, and Phoenix was not in a position where he could freely let that happen.

And it's not like Adrian was completely innocent either, switching between "Somebody help me" and "I refuse to testify" every two seconds. Yes, what Edgeworth did was harsh, but it was done as a last resort, and was pretty much the only way to get through to Adrian, considering the irresponsible deal Franziska made with her.

I have always been curious, though, as to what kind of conversation might have happened between Edgeworth and Adrian that made her not want to kick his teeth in for that first day in court.
