I like harsh critics. I don't want somebody to go in and just say "wow, this game was like so freaking cool I had lots of fun playing it". That's not how you do a review. You're supposed to find flaws, point out what could be fixed, and etc. Sure, hearing about the good can make anticipating a game fun, but that's not the point. They should have high standards, yet not hate on everything in existence. They should be displeased when a good game does something wrong. I absolutely hate it when somebody will freak out because a game they enjoyed recieved criticism. Gamefag's "8.9 zelda" incident. 'Nuff said. They should all go to hell. Whever. There are a few unbelievably bizarre cases of excellent games getting universally disgusted reviews however, though these events are incredibly rare; God Hand for example.
But that aside, a reviewer isn't there to make your gaming choices for you. A lot of people seem to forget that.

Of course, that's not to say you should discredit them just because of one review you strongly disagree with, nor does it mean they're selling out. There are people out there that liked Sonic Heroes, after all.

If you took the writing out of hotel dusk you'd get a standard Adventure Game. But because they threw an excellent plot and characterization into it people are accusing it of being an interactive linear book instead of an adventure title.
Likewise, I don't buy my Sonic games for the plot, hey, if I bought games for plot, I'd never get into Mario or Donkey Kong Country.
As a platformer, Sonic Heroes is a strong title. Much more so then the Adventure Series (Which was more plot then good gaming), and don't get me stared on Sonic Advance.

FF: Streetwise getting an abysimal review when it honestly wasn't that bad is another example. Was it worthy of a 9/10? Hell no. But a 3-4 on 10? Who pissed in their Cheerios?

I used to subscribe to Game Informer. The only reason I didn't continue my subscription was because I was too lazy.
Whatever, I don't care about video game reviews. They're essentially one person's opinion. Though, I do like to read GI's reviews if only just for the fun of it. I love to poke at the differences between their reviews and other's.
BTW, all VG reviews are full of bull, IMO.

Yes, but while most modern sonic games are not as great as his 2D past titles, we've has alot of 3D games and we are able to set the standards based upon past 3D ones, and those games that get good/decent grades are better then the terrible 3D ones.
My biggest problem with Streetwise is the camera, it works against you, and in a game where I need to see all the crap that is trying to kill me, that is really irritating.

Metacritic is a site which weighs the scores given by various sources into one big score. It's an easier way because you can check each individual score given by each individual reviewer. It also works for movies, books, music, dvd and tv releases as well.

It's better to read the review, no matter how biased it seems, as then you'll get a somewhat better idea as to why the game got the score it did.

Hmm...how to put it delicately....
NEVER TRUST GamePro! Sure, they might have the occasional bonus comic/CD, but you're not buying a gaming magazine for that garbage (remember kids: anything else other than the magazine is a perk!). I'm sure there's other things that may be noteworthy of the group, but nothing I can think of at the moment.
Here's a few personal pointers to ensure rating accuracy:
+Always gather as much information on the game in question as possible.
In my case, I usually look to EGM for the majority of my gaming needs, with Game Informer as second banana, but only because it comes "free" with the whole Edge Card subscription.
+Make sure your resources are reliable.
What I mean by this is make sure the reviewer knows his/her stuff. This probably applies more to what you find in the newsstand. You'll probably trust the reviewers from GamePro, EGM, Game Informer, PSM, etc. from "reviewers" from Maxim, Stuff, Newsweek, or even Playboy (?!) Magazine*.
+Don't limit yourself to the "experts". Check out what the "fanbase".
No one knows games (for the most part) than the gamers themselves. Check out forums and other gaming fansites to get a relatively better idea on the game.
+Take it all with a grain of salt.
More often than not, many reviews may be influenced by something, be it money or diehard fans. The fans are generally like double-edged swords - their love of the game/series may blind them from noticing the usually minor/irritating flaws, or the game may fall short of their expectations, which often lead to bashing (any debate concerning the nature of the Star Wars movies is an excellent example). Regardless of what you may think, no game is absolutely perfect.
+Rent/Borrow the game.
The only true way to see if the game is worth the trouble is to play it yourself.
*With the exception of Newsweek (I can't recall this one), the other magazines apparently review video games. I recall one a game ad for "Hunter: The Reckoning" w/ a "Best of..." Award from Playboy.....that's about as good as getting pointers to making new friends from "Mr. Anti-social", which isn't very helpful at all.

The other annoying thing about reviews is the way people think x/10=school grade, so people say a 7/10 = C and the game is only average! Most review sites (good ones) say a 5/10 is an average game and a 7/10 is a good one.
The comment "It got a 7.5/10 or 7/10 so I'm not getting it" is really annoying, thats a really high score, regardless of what it would be if it was a school grade

Yeah, most people have this general mindset. However, with the many games that we have at our disposal, who really wants an "average" game?
Of course, only a few gaming mags continue to use the 10-point system, whereas many modern mags have adopted the 5-point/star system.
So, this is how I see it:
0.0-3.0 pts/1-2 stars:
Unless your obsession is on the same level as a real "trekkie", don't even acknowledge the existence of this one. You'll be lucky if it becomes an instant classic just for sucking so much...
4.0-6.0 pts/3 stars:
If it's a new game, proceed with caution. They may have slipped up a bit, but their efforts may be ushering something revolutionary in the gaming community. If it's part of a series and/or popular gaming franchise, proceed with caution. More often than not, these games may be best reserved for the REAL fans of the series.
7.0-8.0 pts/4 stars:
You probably won't go wrong with this game....maybe. Sure, you might think it was perfect, but if every game got a perfect scores, then it wouldn't be as impressive.
9.0-10 pts/5 stars:
Relatively priceless. A good 80% of the gaming audience, hardcore or not, will find something to enjoy in this title.
The other 20% probably hate the game genre (anti-RPG/sports/fighting, etc.) or just games altogether (Jack Thompson would probably be the most modern example).

I prefer the "traditional" gaming rating system of 10 points. Unlike movies, you can change the outcome of your gaming experience, leaving room for a lot to be considered in the score. In movies, all you can do is sit back and enjoy the "ride".
The 5-point system is very unforgiving, and leaves too much room for skepticism. The 10-point system allows for pretty much "everything" to be considered before passing judgement.
In other words, while a 5-6 point game might deserve a look w/ the 10-point system, anything lower than a 4 is avoided like the Black Plague w/ the 5-star system.

With that in mind, I'd like to think that no one review is meant to be the definitive last word on any game. A person should look at many different reviews of a game and then try to find out if the big picture manages to detract you from wanting a game. If you've read many reviews and still aren't sure, then rent it. After all, nobody can tell you what you like better than you can.
That said, I try to stay away from "Customer Reviews" or "Player Reviews". There are a few well-written ones, but they are unfortunately offset by reviews like this review for Advance Wars DS where the player gave the game a 4.8.

My judgment works about 94% of the time. I've been disappointed about 3x ever. All of those times it was because of fandom getting in the way of better judgment.
