Just picked the game up. Man how did I ever miss this boat? Only have the first game right now (and EBA).

I dunno, I really like this game, but not nearly as much as EBA. It could be that the game isn't in English and thus I'm missing something in the delivery, or it could be that because the game is a prequel that a lot of the polish is missing. Or it could be the absence of Commander Khan yelling, the lack of pre episode arm waving who knows.

Still it's a ton of fun. And there's some weird things in the scoring.

For the record, I deliberately did bad so I could watch the bad results in the episode... But I think this game cheats.

Just unlocked the Divas or whoever they're called. Gameplay is finally tightening up. It was booring breathing the songs after one two or three tries.

OTO2 is the most polished of the three, so hopefully you can track that down at some point. (Though you still have to start on Normal, regrettably.)

And for the record, the 'Divas' are the 'Cheer Girls'. The more you know! :minuki:

If you want, I'll mail this off to you after I've beaten it. It's good, but it's not grabbing my attention near as well as EBA. It plays like a prototype.

(And if you happened to have Ouendan 2 in return I'd be most grateful…)

I'm good, but thanks for the offer. I don't have Osu 2 and haven't seen it, either...

And judging from what you gaiz have been saying, why would I trade Osu 2 for Osu 1? xP

Because I'll murder you in your sleep if you don't. *Cough* I mean, that's quite okay Bad. And my offer still stands to loan you the game irregardless of if you appease my demands.

That said, I use beat Ouendan 1, and then went back and played EBA.

The games are so different and yet the same.

  • The spinner is less strict in EBA then in Ouendan. Which is great because I have a hard time with that period.
  • When you hit combos of 30, 60, 100, 200, etc… in both games the playable character slides in and out on the right side. But in Ouendan, there's a fire in the background. The greater the combo level, the greater the fire. Kinda distracting, but kinda cool too.
  • Ouendan seems to recycle animation sequences a lot more then EBA. This may be part of why I feel that EBA has a deeper plot per episode. Though that could just as easily be because I can read the plot in EBA…
  • A difference in themes I've noticed in the games, Ouendan's best episodes seemed to focus a lot more on love (impress the school girl, win the school girl, race the girl's family), while EBA's best episodes focused on… it's hard to word… Making the world a better place. (Fixing the weather for your little boy, fulfilling your dreams via hard work and determination)
  • Rhythms seems to be a lot tighter and they tried some stunts in some songs they didn't do in EBA, despite having the same gameplay mechanics. Oddly enough, Ouendan seemed easier because of it (the tightness of the beats that is, not the stunts). Maybe I'm looking at this wrong since I didn't know how to play EBA when I started that game, but was practically an expert when I got Ouendan?

Biggest thing I missed from Ouendan? Well, besides English? Being able to skip the pre episode animations. It's not so bad for most of the game, but in the final episode? Kinda torturous waiting to begin playing.

Second biggest thing? Victims waving their arms before the shout of "3 2 1 GO!". So much fun! In Ouendan they kinda zoom in with a cheep fire background, and they zoom distorted. Gotta give points to EBA for presentation.

Though, as hard as I am on Ouendan, some of the songs were kinda catchy. The final was cool, as was the race between the families. It was worth playing. My only regret was playing this long after EBA. I would've appreciated improvements and not backtracking that way.

I think part of the reason OTO1's songs tend to be faster-paced in terms of beat spacing is that you don't get a health bonus from a Beat or Elite Beat in OTO1, unlike EBA and OTO2.

They keep the fire/getting pumped up effect in OTO2 rather than arm-waving, but it's nicer graphically (there's some animation to the characters, not just a tween effect.)

Also, in OTO2 they added the ability to skip level endings as well. Makes the final mission much better to replay.

Welcome to the party Wooster, finally ;)

I love all three games, really glad I picked up on it early via the recommend of friends in Japan espousing good things about OTO1. I feel OTO1 has the best music, but OTO2 is the best game out of them.

Actually I'm surprised that most of you have the first OTO! instead of the second, I always thought that it would be harder to find the first than the second.

Personally I have OTO!2 and EBA.

Being an owner of all three games (counting EBA as a part of this series), I've come out of hibernation to affirm the following:

OTO2 is a GREAT game and definitely the most polished of the three, but I just can't find it in me to rank it above EBA. EBA was the first one I played and it was the one that stuck with me. I played OTO1 & 2 mostly out of hype but they're still good games. To this day, due to language and culture barriers, a lot of meaning and context is lost on me when I play OTO1 & 2, lessening their impact on me, even when I GFAQ's panel-by-panel mission translation guide.

So that's my opinion on the OTO games. They're not bad but they're not great either.
