I sort of couldn't help but to notice that the translation of the tracks on the OST was at times handled a little bit... clumsily. So I decided to go ahead and torture myself check what I could with translators, dictionaries and careful examination of any signs, even without knowing the meaning behind them. Then I came up with these new names. To any people who actually speak Japanese, I'd really appreciate it if some of you took your time and give your opinion on the translated track name, regardless of whether I actually changed it or not.

The main purpose of this thread is basically to establish accurate translations of all AA soundtracks. Some had quite a diversity, with some strange variations to them, which in a few cases, as I checked it, were in fact all wrong, due to original translators' mistakes.

So far the project is not yet finished, but I'm going to keep updating the list with the progress of this thread.

9. Revealing the Truth 2001 or Truth Is Revealed 2001 (I don't expect anyone to acknowledge that one, actually... Including myself xD Tell, Announce, Confess and Inform all majorly refer to the person who hides the truth, however the track was almost never used as "confessing" theme, with exception for Ted Tonate. So I decided to change it accordingly, while keeping Rubia's comment regarding grammar structure of the phrase.)

I have mentioned it already in another thread, but grammatically, truth has to be the subject of the sentence, and tsugeru has to be a transitive verb. So "The Truth Reveals" makes more sense grammtically. Whether you'd like a grammatically correct translation, is a different story.

Keeping 真宵 as the name makes more sense IMHO.

19. Naive People (Mistranslation of the century, really. Someone confused おめでたい (meaning naive, innocent; used in the name) with おめでとう (Japanese for "congratulations"). Thanks for GK1, GK2 and GS5 that made me give it some attention

Not a mistranslation per se, as the original meaning of the word is indeed 'happy/good/joyous/etc' (that's why omedetou means congratulations). The word is also used in a sarcastic way (i.e. medatai yatsu), so it depends on the context whether you want to go for naive/simple/carefree, or happy. Considering the atmosphere of the song, I would choose a translation somewhere in between the two meanings though, as naive sounds a bit too harsh IMHO.

Edit: wait, tsugu isn't a transitive word either. Heh.

...Right. Google converted kanji to romaji as "Mashō", so I didn't quite get the connection. So... Heartbroken Maya? I suppose I'll add that as an alternative as well.

I don't know if we should treat that just like "Kokone" pun and ignore it, or replace it...

My 2 cents:

First, you mispelled "Reminiscence" a couple times (in "The DL-6 Incident" and "True Pain").

Quote:
17. 追憶 ~傷心の真宵
17. Reminiscence ~ Heartbreaking Truth at Evening or Reminiscence ~ Heartbreaking Evening of Truth

"真宵" is Maya's Japanese name. "傷心の真宵" means "heartbroken Maya".

21. ゴージャス!
21. Gorgeous!

This is Max's catchphrase. "Gorgeous!" is a correct translation, but if you're going for a localization, it should be "Fabulous!".

Don't know why you don't have the Japanese name of GS2 track 35; it's "検事のつぶやき ~再会を期して".

Note: in Gyakuten Saiban Jiten, there is an extra track between the last 2 songs of GS2's OST, named "空港のふたり" (it's the music of the scene at the airport). But it's not in the OST for some reason, so it probably doesn't matter to you.

There are some weird things in GS3's names.

10. Dahlia Hawthorne ~ Distant Traces of Beauty

Where does the "of beauty" come from?

Not sure why you'd want to translate the name literally...

Quote:
22. 五十嵐将兵 〜せつなき哉、軍歌のしらべよ
22. Victor Kudo ~ A Painful Declaration, and War Song

I don't think "a painful declaration" is correct, though I'm not sure of the correct translation...

Why does "truth" have to be the subject, exactly? "Tell the truth" seems a correct translation to me...

Omokage is 'just' an image/vision, so has nothing to do with beauty....?

More something like 'how sad, the melody of this war song'. 哉 is old Japanese and used in exclamations (oh!/how!/etc).

'Scenery of Dusky Bridge' or something like that (-> dusky bridge is the object of the verb, not the subject, so very literally a scenery where you can see Dusky Bridge).

Because of the basics of Japanese grammar? 告げる is a 他動詞 and 真実は is the 主語 of the sentence, so it has to be the thing that tells.

Weird. おぼろ橋の見える風景... If we take the Dusky Bridge out, we're left with two words... 見える... Which is "to see", if I'm not mistaken? And 風景, which means scenery.

Oh well, I guess it's not worth arguing about.

On the subject of track names, in GK1, Shi-Long Lang theme's "狼士龍 ~狼子、曰く!" is usually translated as "Speak up, Pup!". But it actually means "Lang Zi says".

It can have an object, but considering that は is a topic marker and there are no other objects in the title, 真実 has to be the subject, not the object. Had the title been something like 真実は告げるもの, sure, you could make a case for は to mark an object, but as it is now, 真実 is the subject of the verb, not the object. (Another easy way is to just replace 真実 with a different word. Grammatically, タイホくんは告げる is the exact same sentence, but would anyone translate it as 'Talk about the Blue Badger' or something like that?)

Appearance yes, but it has nothing to do with beauty.

Note that the first character is actually 'to throw up'. The Beautiful Throwing-Up Hermitage! (that's why it's a horrible name for a restaurant!).

見える is to be visible, not to see. の is here the subject marker of the subordinate clause (の is here the same as が.). So it's a scenery, with the subordinate clause of 'where Dusky Bridge is visible'.

I always found it as an incomplete title that intended "truth" to be personified. It's what comes along when some sort of truth is revealed, and it in turn reveals something else. Granted, personifying a non-descriptive noun such as "truth" isn't grammatically or semantically correct, but that's beside the point.

Quote:
22. 五十嵐将兵 〜せつなき哉、軍歌のしらべよ

After searching around a bit, I think this "せつなき" can be written as 切泣き, as if to show his earnest weeping for this melody.

Either that, or it's actually 切な気, to show a pure, passionate spirit of the song. I think this one actually works better. It's not an especially sad tune, after all.

...would "せつな" be relevant here? Cause I don't know how to fit any "moments" or "instants" in that title...

I also decided to go with Ash's advice and rename "Naive People" and "More Naive People" to "Blissful People" and "More Blissful People". It has a little hint to its previous meaning as the first thing that comes to mind upon hearing that word is phrase "blissful ignorance" (at least to me) and would be leaning more towards that "happy" meaning.

Added AJ and DD, by the way. Not many changes there, but still worth some attention.

Also, there are some remaining tracks we need to decide on:

  1. Should we limit ourselves to the literal translation of the Psyche Lock theme, or do you think that this "Lock on the Heart" is a nice touch?
  2. Should we try to make title referencing words "evening" and "true", or just go with "Heartbroken Maya"
  3. "Revealing the Truth"? "Truth is Revealed"? "Announce the Truth"? Which one we should go with? I myself would like to go with "Revealing the Truth", as it places the focus more on the lawyer revealing the truth, rather than forcing a witness to do so... But I don't want this to be my decision alone.

No, that doesn't make sense. I've suggested a more fitting interpretation above.

As for those song titles that seem to have a double meaning in Japanese that can't be directly translated to English, I suggest keeping one and leaving the other out. It'd be too crowded for a song title if the entire thing needs a footnote.

Song titles should be more convenient to read/say, so translating some of them literally could come off as awkward. Nonetheless, I think "The Truth Reveals" is pretty catchy by itself.

Rubia! We're supposed to choose between alternatives, not to add even more of them! >_<

Hahah, just kidding :D Hm... Distant Traces of Beauty kinda still fits right with me... However, I am not sure how to get closer with this "beauty" to "appearance"... Do you think it can be left like that and still not be too much forced in? "Distant Traces" feels like there's something actually missing here ^^;

The Truth Reveals, hm? Very literally translated and some people reading that can automatically imagine adding "itself" to the title, which would reference the in-game quotes... Hmm... I'm starting to like it, actually.

So... The Victor Kudo's theme ultimately would be...? What exactly ^^;

This is a good thread (especially since in my earlier days I made some less-than-stellar translations; I recently found out that a bit of overzealous editing by me on the AA wiki around the time of GK2 apparently caused something of a minor firestorm and some bad info to be passed around. So I'm all for a better translation effort from the community!)

With regards to the Psycho-Lock thing: the title is just 心理錠 (サイコ・ロック), so while the kanji translate to "locks/chains of the heart", the (サイコ・ロック) makes me think it's supposed to be read as "Psycho Lock". I opted for the more dramatic "Chains of the Heart" with my translations of DD's tracklist, but that may have been overzealous on my part.

Also, one thing to keep in mind with regards to the court themes (including 真実は告げる) - they're present in PLvsAA's sound test, which means come March we'll actually have official translations for them! That said, 真実は告げる really does have to be read as "The Truth Reveals" or "The Truth Will Tell" or something like that, like Ash has said - we've all just gotten super-used to "Announce/Confess/Inform the Truth".

Don't know about this, but ever since I saw "Lock on the Heart" on one of the translations earlier, I really got fond of it. The biggest dilemma on this one here is what we should go for - lock, chains or none at all. In my opinion "Psycho Lock" itself was a little bit too short and... boring?

Hmm. That's why I don't think we're going to call the translation complete until PLvsAA is released. I do hope they keep "Cornered", though... I'm not sure if something else is going to fit all that well with GS4 and GS5 track names ^^;

It's 'simply' 切ない (sadness), in the classic 連体形 form (せつなき) + 哉 (emphatic cry). So it would translate to something like "Alas, the melody of this war song!".

So, out of curiosity, I checked back to the GS3 script for Gumshoe's song, during which Kudo's theme played... now I take it back. (;ω;) It is indeed a sad melody... but then I remember an old vid on nico with Miku Hatsune Gumshoe singing it and now can't get rid of this stupid grin.

  3. "Revealing the Truth"? "Truth is Revealed"? "Announce the Truth"? Which one we should go with? I myself would like to go with "Revealing the Truth", as it places the focus more on the lawyer revealing the truth, rather than forcing a witness to do so... 6. ...and all the remaining "or"s

1) I would personally just keep "Psyche Locks" alone.
2) "Heartbroken Maya". I see no reason to translate Maya's name literally.
4) For the ringtones, I would keep the characters names since that's how they are in Japanese... but you could do something like "Ringtone - Phoenix Wright (The Steel Samurai)". By the way, why use "-" instead of "/"?

For GS4 and GS5, in addition to what Ash said:

Quote:
26. ラミロア ~音の風景画家
26. Lamiroir ~ The Landscape Painter of Sound

The in-game translation is "landscape painter in sound".

Quote:
22. 番轟三 ~合言葉はジャスティス!
22. Bobby Fulbright ~ The Secret Word is Justice!

I'm not sure, but I'm wondering if "in justice we trust" would be a better localization.

Quote:
15. Detention Center ~ Jailer's Elegy
17. Detention Center ~ The Elegy of Surveillance Cameras
16. Detention Center ~ Elegy of the Detained
24. Detention Center ~ Elegy of the Bulletproof Glass

Shouldn't these be consistent? Like "Elegy of the Jailers" instead of "Jailer's Elegy" and "Elegy of the Surveillance Cameras" instead of "The Elegy of Surveillance Cameras". (By the way, "Jailers" is specifically plural)

Quote:
41. 希月心音 ~法廷の革命児
41. Athena Cykes ~ Courtroom's Revolution

"革命児" means a person who causes/leads a revolution, so Courtroom Revolutionist/Revolutionary/Révolutionnaire is better.

Quote:
13. 『守るべきもののために』
13. "For Those I Will Protect"

"Should Protect" or "Must Protect" is more accurate I think.

Quote:
20. 『逆転の大海賊』
20. "Turnabout Great Pirates"

Isn't it called "Turnabout Reclaimed" in English?

Quote:
21. 荒船水族館 ~涼やかな海
21. Shipley Aquarium ~ A Refreshing Sea

It's "Shipshape Aquarium".

Quote:
23. 『海賊ショーの歌』 ~冒険の海はココネ!
23. "Pirate Show Song" ~ The Sea of Adventure is Here!

The pirate show song is called "Swashbuckler Spectacular Song".
And doesn't "ココネ" refers to Athena rather than "here"?

I wanted to include this "sadness" in it, so I went with your earlier suggestion - "How Sad, the Melody of this War Song"

Oowww, I thought it was a nice variation that would still somehow focus on "necessity". But I suppose it's right... we could choose something along the lines "Need to Corner" or "Must Be Cornered", but it really sounds to me like something's missing...

Ash wrote:

1. okay

There is inconsistency between the titles in Japanese as well. In Japanese, the chapter is titled something among the lines of "Turnabout Return" if I recall correctly...? I feel as if the cutscene track refers more to the song/show itself rather than the game chapter.

Are there any remaining objections to the tracklists? Also, what do you propose to do with GS4's Pursuit theme?

Actually it doesn't mean "Mayoi of Grief". "傷心の" is like an adjective. Look here. "傷心の" means broken-hearted/heart-broken/down-hearted.

You're right, it is called "Turnabout Return". I had no idea.

I don't think "The Scenery as Seen from the Dusky Brigde" is correct (you misspelled Bridge by the way). It's the bridge that's seen, not the scenery... I think it's better not to include the "seen" and go with something like "Scenery of Dusky Bridge".

I'm okay with Victor's theme, but for Dahlia, it seems incorrect. It could be something like "distant face", "distant image", "distant shadow", but the "of beauty" shouldn't be there.

For GS4's Pursuit, I would say "Must Corner".

Hmm... So there is a significant difference, right? "Jailed" might refer to both one person as well as multiple persons, so I though it would fit well... Especially taking GS3's Detention Center theme into consideration.

"Distant Image" fits well. For Dahlia "Distant Shadow" would fit, but I decided to keep in mind that it's also used as Iris's theme.

Yes, there's a significant difference. "The jailed" (like "the detained") means the people imprisoned in the detention center. "Jailers" are the guards working in the detention center.

Should we go with "Elegy of the Jailers" or "Elegy of the Guards"? Or maybe "Elegy of the Security Guards", making a slight connection between GS1's and GS2's themes?

Especially considering the fact that Detention Center is not really "jail"...

Ace Attorney Investigations up!

It's time like this I regret it wasn't translated as "Ace Prosecutor". Some of these were a little bit... tricky, so I would really appreciate some criticism and possible confirmation. ^^

Before I start putting in the translations for GK2, I have a question - should I use names from the translation patch, like "Prosecutor's Path" instead of "Gyakuten Kenji 2", or should we keep romanized version of original names?

I would also like some confirmation on the grammar of Quercus Alba's theme, Cohdophian Embassies theme and Godot's Reminiscence theme.

Now that you mention it... I checked the scripts, and "看守" is always translated as "guard", or sometimes "security guard". So I guess "jailers" isn't really correct...

Personally I'm not familiar with the fan translation, so I would rather use the Japanese names when no official localization is available. But maybe others will disagree.

I've just noticed for GS3 you wrote "Cross-Examination ~ Moderate" while you used "Moderato" for the other games. It's not incorrect, but it should be consistent.

I don't think "あんな日々" means "regular life". Tough I'd like another opinion on this.

GK1:

Quote:
4. 捜査 ~現場のムジュン
14. 追求 ~つきつめたくて

That's strange. May I ask where you got the song titles from? On vgmdb, these tracks are called "推理 ~現場のムジュン" and "追究 ~つきつめたくて".

Quote:
(I couldn't translate ギゾク with anything. Does it mean "Great Thief"?)

It means chivalrous thief/robber.

Quote:
(Please confirm. Dictionaries didn't find anything, so I used Google's translation... Which is exactly why I need confirmation.)

According to weblio, ゆかいな means pleasant/amusing/merry/delightful/cheerful/happy. So that's correct.

Quote:
14. 糸鋸圭介 ~やるときはやるッス
14. Dick Gumshoe ~ I can do it when it counts, pal! (??? I really don't know. I couldn't translate that.)

Literally, it means something like "when I do, I do". It's apparently an expression that means: to do something seriously/with effort when it's important. So I'd say the translation here is correct.

Sligneris wrote:

I don't see a problem with those. If you want a more literal translation, Alba's theme would be "The Enemy Who Surpasses the Law" and Godot's Reminiscence something like "Feeling The Bitter Taste of Truth". But that's not a big difference.

Phew.... Ace Attorney Investigations 2 up.

I allowed myself to translate Yumihiko's nickname, as it's pretty straightforward. Included a pun, even. ;) "No. 1", referring to how much of a genius he is which might also be read as "No. One", referring to how he's actually not :D Might remove it if asked, though.

Jozerick wrote:

"Elegy of the Security Guards", then.

That was just an oversight on my part. Fixed

"日々" means, "daily", "every day", so I suppose it would be something more like "everyday life" if anything, but "あんな" means "sort of", such", so maybe something among the lines of "Can't Return to Days Like Those"?

Got these names from here. ...It's gonna be bad if now it's Japanese titles that are inconsistent.

Pretty sure the list you linked to is incorrect, though. Pursuit themes absolutely never had "追究" prefix.

Edit: Now that's weird... You're actually right. Pursuit theme is "追究" in GK2 too. However, both AA and AAI versions are romanized as "tsuikyū", so I suppose we should keep it the same in the translation. That changes "Contradiction at the Crime Scene" track, though. "Investigation" prefix becomes "Deduction". Thank you for help, and sorry for my initial reaction.

Literally, it means something like "when I do, I do". It's apparently an expression that means: to do something seriously/with effort when it's important. So I'd say the translation here is correct.

Huh... Okay, I suppose it's correct translation. However, I'm not sure what to do with that one. Technically, we should capitalize every first letter, but so far that one was treated like an exception, similarly to Athena's theme... And it doesn't look all that well, with every letter capitalized... Hmm...

How was Yatagarasu referred to in-game again...? "Noble Thief"? I'll change that, then.

I was also wondering on renaming Cohdopian Reminiscence theme to "The Countries Torn Apart" to mirror the regular one, but this time it's English grammar I'm not sure about...

Thanks for all the confirmations, by the way! ^^

Edit: Now that's weird... You're actually right. Pursuit theme is "追究" in GK2 too. However, both AA and AAI versions are romanized as "tsuikyū", so I suppose we should keep it the same in the translation.

They may be pronounced the same, but they are different words though. The main series' 追求 is to pursue/follow/look for something (i.e. to get a hold on something), while AAI's 追究 is about finding things out, clearing things up. The meanings are close, but they are definitely used as seperate words with distinct differences.

Renaming, so that both the proper meaning and Athena's name are in here... I hope there are no problems with that one? ^^;

...Both could be translated as "Investigation" (into something), but that would be too easily confused with, err, well... "Investigation" themes. I thought about keeping both meanings by a synonymous words of sorts...
"Search", maybe? ...Ugh, that too is too easily confused with "Investigation" themes.

Any ideas?

I allowed myself to translate Yumihiko's nickname, as it's pretty straightforward. Included a pun, even. ;) "No. 1", referring to how much of a genius he is which might also be read as "No. One", referring to how he's actually not :D Might remove it if asked, though.

I think it should be translated anyway. イチリュウ is a noun, not a name. (I think it's used as an adjective here, so "イチリュウの推理" may mean "first-class reasoning").

"日々" means, "daily", "every day", so I suppose it would be something more like "everyday life" if anything, but "あんな" means "sort of", such", so maybe something among the lines of "Can't Return to Days Like Those"?

Yes that sounds right.

I don't know why it should be an exception though. I understand for Athena's theme since that's how it was written in Japanese, but here I don't see a problem with "I Can Do It When It Counts, Pal!".

Let's see... there's no consistent translation. Noble, noble thief, vigilante, noble vigilante, modern Robin Hood...
"Noble thief" sounds right.

Alright, changed.

Hmm... "Reminiscence ~ The Amnesiac Girl" sounds weird, though... "Reminiscence ~ A Girl With Lost Memories/Memory Loss" maybe would work better?

I was also trying to do something with Shigaraki's theme, although I'm not sure what I should do with it... I understand that it was supposed to mean"[his] motive/real intention [was a] joke", or something like that? I don't want to get too creative there, but I have no idea how to put it. :ron:

I've checked through the lists again, and I have to question how the Pursuit themes are named. I see you prefer to stick with more literal translations of track names - though I'd have to differ - but in that case, "Questioned" and "Caught" should be changed to "Seeking to Question" and "Catching Hold". (I prefer using "seeking", but maybe it's just me. "Wanting" gives off the vibe that the pursuers of truth are a bit desperate when they're supposed to be triumphant/driven. Then again, GS really does bring on the desperation sometimes.)

Also, the GK Pursuit theme names are a bit oddly worded. This is the result of taking a translation a bit too literally and ending up with a confusing title. Perhaps "Seeking to Search Through" and "Seeking to Pinpoint", or something like these, would be more fitting. Since none of the Pursuit titles actually include the word "truth" or "end" in them, they can be applied to anything.

And just for the record, what's translated as "Press" in the GS cross-examinations is actually "ゆさぶる", which means "to shake, to jolt" - Shouting "Hold it!" does do the trick. What's translated as "Pinpoint" in the Mood Matrix scenes is "つきとめる"... which is the same verb as in GK2's track name. It's also why I chose it.

The main logic I followed while translating these was that all of the three below had "to want" in the structure.

GS2 is actually "Wanting to Cross-Examine", not "Questioned", as it uses the same word as in Cross-Examination themes, and is meant (and probably was in Japanese version?) to reference common question in the game, whether we want to continue with questioning.

GK translated as something among the lines of "get down", "investigate thoroughly" and "follow an argument to its logical conclusion"

GK2 was basically just "wanting to find out".

Hmm... I think I'd need more opinions on that one.

Yes that would work too.

That's not really the same word. Cross-examination is "尋問", while the verb in GS2's pursuit theme is "問い詰める"/"問いつめる". They share a kanji, but it's not the same word. "Wanting to question" would be correct.

I stand corrected, then.

I still want to somehow change Maya's Reminiscence.... Would "Maya's Heartbreaking Evening" work? (Similarly with Athena's Pirate Song theme)

^ The "Heartbreaking Evening" when there was no Steel Samurai episode to watch after it finally ended.

No, the difference between that theme and Athena's pirate song is that the first one doesn't have a specific pun to it. The other one does.

Well, it's just that that day, as nevertalk suggested in his blog, Maya spent entire evening grieving over Mia's death in detention center...

I don't know. "Heartbroken Maya" just like that sounds weird to me.

...Hm. Can we assume that the current version is final, aside from the tracks that will get translated in PLvsAA?
