Pichu falls under the clone characters for me. With ROB, I just didn't care for him much. He always felt too clunky to control for my tastes and his moveset wasn't my cup of tea. It's purely my opinion though. I feel he's a step up from all the useless clone characters Melee introduced, but he just wasn't all that fun to use for me.

To reiterate as well, I never once said he was the worst character added. I just said I didn't like him and in my opinion, felt like more of a wasted slot than what the Pac-Man haters are saying, but I never said he was the worst. I apologize for the confusion. I'd gladly take ROB over Pichu any day.

@Cat: He was. Everything he did damaged himself. It was a really dumb mechanic.

I guess I have a problem with Pac-man being there because I know he's in there as a service to Namco...a concession if you will.

Like he didn't earn his place there with the Nintendo greats, he was there by contractual obligation.

It just feels dirty to me...like that Mercedes Benz in Mario Kart.

Well, he was technically in the 2 Mario Kart Arcade Games made by Namco, so it's not the first time he's ever been in a game alongside Mario. I can understand where you're coming from though. While Pac-Man is somewhat of a video game legend like Mario, unlike Mario, he hasn't really done anything outstanding or anything. I guess with me though, growing up with Pac-Man and knowing that he's been in a couple of games with Mario before, it doesn't really bug me as much.

I honestly see the hype or lack thereof with Pac-Man akin to how Game and Watch was received with Melee or even Ice Climbers. The former hadn't done as much as of late like Pac-Man, and as for Ice Climbers I believe they were a bit more obscure than what Pac-Man is so it was an odd choice at the time. I don't really have an opinion towards Pac-Man at the moment and I'm going to wait and see how he handles. He might become somewhat of a cult fave like Game and Watch, he might not. I'll just wait and see.

Well him being Mario Kart is exactly the same sort of bothersome corporate circumstances seeing how Namco had a hand in those games too so it doesn't really sway much for me that he's joined them in games before.

Huh. I must've forgotten. Guess I was still young and dumb enough to be fooled by his adorable-kawaii-ness. Then again, I didn't really feel or like it much when Game and Watch was in Melee. I dunno, he felt... off.

I just realized that the custom special moves might be a way to get rid of clones... I mean, why do you need to have Fox, Falco, and Wolf, when you can just have Fox, and make his custom special moves the same as the kits of Fox, Falco, and Wolf from Brawl?

Although I do have to wonder how easy/difficult it'll be to customize. I mean, when my friends come over to play, will each of them have to change the moves every time to play a different character? And will they also have to change the equipment to their personal preference?

That's where Amiibo comes in

Or they could save it to the nametags they used in Brawl.

Eh, while Pichu was undoubtedly the worst character in Melee, he was still quite useful for at least one thing; bragging rights. If you could beat someone with Pichu, especially with no items, it cemented you as the best. He's kind of like Dan Hibiki from Street Fighter, in a way.

Look at the bigger picture here. For the first time ever we have Mario, Mega Man, Sonic and Pac-Man in one game. Corporate obligations be damned, that alone is something that no one thought would ever happen, especially not after how fiercely competitive the companies were with their properties back in the days of the NES.

I'm not saying that validates it completely, but you have to admit, this kind of brings the whole of the "mascot wars" from back then full circle.

Hm, that'd work.

It's be super-annoying the very first time they do it, but... better than every single time.

So the 3DS game is coming out on Sept 13th in Japan...

Looks like I'll have to move far away from civilization to not spoil myself (or just avoid Smash Bros talks, whatever works).

The new characters look good, though. Pac-Man looks charming as hell and, thankfully, uses the PacLand design. Palutena was a bit "meh", seeing that her inclusion would be very obvious (though her reveal trailer was a nice bit of fanservice for people who played KI: U). Mii Fighters were better than what I would think a Mii would do in Smash Bros, but the very fact they're customizable and can't be used in online makes them feel a little less of a character and more of a fun bonus.

Pffft, online play isn't what you get Smash Bros for, it's for the fun on-the-couch battles with your friends in a roomful of mirth.

I guess i'm a pretty good player, back in Melee my main was Pichu and i won a ton of matches against friends and family.

To be clear, you can use the Mii Fighter online when playing with friends, just not with strangers. It's true though, nothing compares to beating the hell out of your friends in the same room. I'm glad Nintendo still remembers that, unlike some other companies.

Today I got to try out the new Super Smash game for the 3DS. One thing that sucked is that I couldn't test out how online works since the demo wasnt set up to have online matches (Good thing I played the Wii U demo first). The graphics are not bad for a 3DS port of the game. The game mechanics run just as well as the Wii U version but I did like the controls better than the Pro Controller used on the Wii U since it feels different than the gamecube controller.
I wish I could have gotten to see how the Mii characters would have played out but both systems didnt have the feature in the demo.

Final Review: 9/10 for the 3DS version

Well yeah it's not officially released the netcode might not be ready and players might not readily be available anyway. Still it's good to hear it runs just as well. The graphics while nice will be something I'll get in the wii U version of the game.

I would have excepted though if they could do some kind of local play since the systems were connected with each other. The graphics on the 3DS version looked very well too so Im getting that one and then the Wii U one later on.

Played it at my local Best Buy today. The lines were long, but were allowed two 2-minute matches on the Wii U and one two-minute match on the 3DS version.

The Wii U version plays very well. I got to play as Sonic in the first match and Mega Man in the second. Sonic plays about the same as before, with the biggest difference being his down-A attack now having him do a leg split instead of that self-spin move, and is also a smash attack. He also has less lag between his attacks, so now he can fight slightly faster.

Mega Man was fun to try out. His attacks are somewhat slow but the payoff if they connect is pretty good to compensate. I wasn't quite that good with him though and only ended up in 2nd, but it was still fun.

The 3DS version was pretty cool too. I played Mario and tried that New Super Mario Bros. 2 stage where you turn gold after collecting 100 coins. Something I noticed that wasn't discussed with the pic of the day is the fact that you become slightly heavier and slower when turned into gold. Though I gotta say, terrorizing Samus, Kirby and Rosalina with a giant, golden Mario wielding a hammer was pretty funny.

SHSL Ultimate Hope wrote:

I feel that I should point out that the 3DS version is not a port of the Wii U version. While fundamentally the same game, they're being built separately from the ground up with several differences. Sakurai considers their coordinate development as Smash 4 and 5 rather than just one game.

Sounds like the bestbuy demos were better than the one in Nintendo World but only if you were able to have a smash match against others and not just with com's on the 3 DS.

My apologies, I thought the 3DS was a port but I forget that they did mention it was it's own separate game.

I hated using Little Mac because his jumps were so terrible that I kept dying every time I tried to reach back into the ring.

Thats fine and all but what im saying is that if you are knocked far out of the ring then its far hard to make it back into the ring compared to the other characters. It happened to me a lot when i choose little mac.

Well its hard to when 3 other people are trying to throw you out of the ring when you have 100%+ damage. I just didn't like the way he places, maybe when i get the game and practice with him I might get used to him.

Solution: Don't get to 100% damage, anyone on 100+ is a big target to the other players.

Though yeah he's got all those counters and dodges and an (almost) one-hit K.O. so he needed a pretty massive downside to balance him out.

Not to mention most of his moves have "super armor", a.k.a. an immunity to flinching, which means that his attacks won't get interrupted while he's executing them. You can essentially charge a strong move and massively damage and/or smash someone just doing standard damage to you.

Like i mentioned before, its probably because i have to get used to him but from what I experienced when i played him I didn't like that weakness since i rely on my recovery which is why I either choose Toon Link or Adult Link.

I think the point of the game is to kill other people without taking any damage yourself. But not everyone can do that instantly.

Well it is pretty hard to not take any damage when your playing against 3 other people gunning for each other.

I think the point of the game is to kill other people without taking any damage yourself. But not everyone can do that instantly.

Well it is pretty hard to not take any damage when your playing against 3 other people gunning for each other.

I was being sarcastic.

Changing the topic slightly, what are some characters that you guys like that you hope will make it into Smash? Personally, I'm crossing my fingers for Midna from Zelda (she's in Hyrule Warriors, an action heavy game, so I don't think it's too much of a stretch to imagine her in SSB) and Krystal from Star Fox.

I'd really like Lucas back, though I know if they're gonna put a Mother representative back in again, it's going to be Ness. I just really preferred the way Lucas handled, and considering I never liked the way Ness handled since the original, it says a lot considering I really didn't think I'd like Lucas at first.
On April 3, 2016, Court Records Forums experienced a miracle upon that day.

Midna was revealed to be an assist trophy during the Smash Bros Direct back in April, and afterward on Sakurai's daily Miiverse post.

As for Krystal, while I did originally want her in the game because the series needed more female fighters and she wields a staff, Palutena has really covered both those points for me. More Star Fox representation would be nice, though.

Hypothetically, how would you feel if they brought back Ness with Lucas' feel and control? If they don't bring Lucas back, that would probably be the best case scenario to me.

I kind of want to see Chibi robo in the game.
They could make a moveset for Wii fit trainer i'm sure they can do it for him.

I've said it before and will say it again: Ghirahim.
He'd be a great foe to fight. He could punch and down-B could have him get out his sword (or swords) and fight with those. Similar mechanic to how Zelda (used to) change to Sheik. His grab move could be using his long tongue to envelope someone before throwing them. His Final Smash could be his chocolate form, beating people up with his muscles. His taunt could be wagging his tongue, invading a character's private space or making his cape fade away.
Another great Zelda representation and he needs more Ghira-Love. Especially compared to Yuga, who feels like a bland copy of Ghirahim with a bit of Kefka thrown in.

I'm all for Ghirahim. While a revamped Ganondorf is higher on my list, Ghirahim's potential is vast, just like you said. Also, they need to squeeze in some of his better quotes somehow.

Since it's much more likely that Chrom will join the fray instead of Lucina, I at least hope they use the fan idea where his Final Smash is to propose to whoever he's closest to.

Phoenix Wright Let's see. A reasonable character would be the Ice Climbers. I didn't use them much in melee and brawl, but damn Ice Climbers bring hype to high level gameplay! I hope their chain-grab will be the same as previous installments though.
Face your emptiness don't be afraid. The danger is often smaller than your fear.

Hmm I would like to see Maxwell from Scribblenauts. It would pretty pretty interesting to see what his moves would be.
