I've been mainly using either Rosalina or Daisy for online, but I mainly use lightweights racing in the cups, as they tend to have high acceleration.
Also, My NNID is 'SuperAj3' if anyone wants to add it.

Nope, no surprise at all. While I don't have a Wii U (and MK8 by extension) Rosalina was always my main in both MK Wii and MK7. Then again, I think she might be my favorite character from any non-RPG Mario game.
...Mostly because she has some actual backstory behind her.
And I think she's pretty...

She doesn't do anything besides standing in a room and looking sexy.

Other than the obvious matter of her being nice to look at, she's got a unique backstory, she plays a role other than damsel in distress, she controls the Comet Observatory, and she comes off as more mature than most of the other characters in the series. Admittedly, though, my main reason for using her in Mario Kart 8 is simply that she's in my preferred weight class and out of the four characters in that class, she's my favorite. If she were a lightweight or a super-heavyweight, I probably wouldn't use her at all.

Funnily enough, this is probably the first Mario Kart game where I feel the AI is actually quite fair at higher difficulties. They fight each other just as much as you, and while they still rubberband you if you're in the lead, it's not nearly as bad as it was in MKWii and MK7. I can't say there's any other Mario Kart where I've stayed in first place an entire race without so much as a peep from my AI competitors because they were too busy hitting one other.

I've mentioned it before, but I am quite fond of using the Mii. The bike setup I've acquired has become my go-to for both single player and online.

Aside from the reasons GL mentioned above, I have to imagine at least part of her popularity has to do with the fact that she's a playable female character in the Mario universe, and there are very few of those. I mean, main game-wise, is there even anyone else other than Peach?

Certainly true. There are times on 150cc and Mirror Grands Prix in which I've pretty much dominated individual courses.

I'd probably use my Mii if he were a middleweight. However, since tall Miis such as mine are assigned to the heaviest category, I've avoided using him. Handling and Top Speed are the most important stats for me, and the Light Heavyweights are my ideal weight class for such a combination. All else equal, top speed increases with a character's weight at the expense of handling, acceleration, traction, and Mini-Turbo strength. I can offset the handling penalty by choosing certain vehicles and tires, but only to an extent. If I go any heavier than a Light Heavyweight, handling gets lower than I prefer to work with.

With one exception, I've actually started using the weight classes from boxing to refer to the various weight classes in Mario Kart 8.

Lemmy, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, Baby Rosalina, Small Mii: Featherweight
Toad, Toadette, Koopa Troopa, Shy Guy, Lakitu, Larry, Wendy: Lightweight
Peach, Daisy, Yoshi: Welterweight
Mario, Luigi, Iggy, Ludwig, Medium Mii: Middleweight
Rosalina, Waluigi, Roy, Donkey Kong: Light Heavyweight
Metal Mario, Pink Gold Peach: Heavyweight
Bowser, Wario, Morton, Large Mii: Super-Heavyweight

Regarding Rosalina's popularity it's because she's the only heavy option thats not some kind of monster, robot, animal or ugly evil man.

It's a 'good' heavyweight.

This is the main reason I race with her. That, and her design isn't really as deterring as say, Roy.meaning I also think she looks pretty
I understand why she's so popular, but I don't understand why she's becoming more of a main character than Daisy. Daisy has her own attitude (and in the sports games is actually more level headed than Peach.). But that's a discussion for another day.

I'm not sure I'd say more level-headed, her temper in Mario Strikers was probably one of her more defining characteristics.

Though yeah I prefer Daisy, she's sassy.

Compared to Peach's tantrums in Strikers, she was less of a crybaby, but yeah, sassy's the word! :gant: (Her comments in Mario Golf are also pretty character defining, and it was nice she had a bit of an attitude compared to Peach.)

In the Gamecube one, you can comment during the other players turns, and she says things like "Are you just gonna let me win?" or "Seriously, are you aiming there?"
So those kinds of remarks that she gives shows her personality.

The only thing I can really think of that really accounts for Rosalina's popularity is she's more than one-dimensional than the other female characters. Peach is the goody-two shoes, Daisy is the tomboy, but I think with Rosalina in Galaxy and having some sort of backstory to develop her character, she's a bit more fleshed out. Granted, outside of the RPG games, there's really not a lot of characterization going on for any of the Mario cast so Rosalina getting that first treatment in a main Mario game might contribute a bit.

I think what hurts Peach and Daisy compared to Rosalina as well is Peach has the status quo of being the kidnapped princess with no personality outside of screaming for help and giving Mario cake and kisses. Daisy had no personality whatsoever in the one game she was in and since introduced, played the opposite of Peach with the tomboy persona. Considering the games she's been in are just party and sports games, she hasn't been able to really develop as a character and has remained one-dimensional. Rosalina has more to contribute since she was given more characterization and while I don't feel it's a lot, it's more than what Daisy and even long time Peach has gotten (if you don't count Paper Mario).

Granted, I don't really favor one over the other, but it's a hunch that characterization plays some role in all this.

Like I said though, I choose her strictly because she handles similar to Funky Kong in Wii for me. I tried Waluigi first, but his handling is just a tad too excessive for my tastes. While I figure I could get into him over time, Rosalina was much easier to get into.

According to the Mario Wiki, Rosalina and Waluigi have the exact same stats in Mario Kart 8, meaning they handle exactly the same as long as their vehicles have the same stats.

That's odd, and maybe it was just me, but when I did the exact same set-up for both, Waluigi had a tad higher bit of speed and his traction was a tad lower. Maybe I just overlooked it.

I didn't know you could do that! That's pretty neat! It must have been Thwomp Ruins though, I remember screwing up a few times on there. I only got on casually to play for a bit and saw no one was on so I just went for the worldly thing to up my rank, seeing as I haven't played it all that much. I was shocked that I actually had a fairly decent run today. I think the N64 Rainbow Road was probably the worst luck I had today.

Being able to join in a game is the best part of online play. It's so much fun to face off against rivals again, instead of them leaving and that's it.

So, okay, I just got this, and I have absolutely no idea what you people complaining about the AI in 7 are on.

The computer pulls so, SO much more bullshit in this game than in 7; 7 is extremely easy if you use your items intelligently and pay attention to what the other drivers have (which I don't think you can even do in 8).

I can attest that handling items effectively, for me anyways, in 7 did no good. I've eaten many more blue shells in 7 than I have in 8. So far, 8's blue shell problem has been much less frequent for me than in 7.

Also, I haven't seen anyone else complain about having trouble with 7, I think I've really been the only one to really voice that opinion.

I thought someone else in this thread mentioned it and I've certainly seen people on Gfaqs with similar complaints. I never got nuked with about a dozen shells of all sorts in the first two races in 7, though.

And I guess the giant WiiU tablet has a screen that shows what each racer is carrying but it's not as comfortable as a classic controller.

Yeah, I have that problem with blue shells in Mario Kart 7. Sure, I get bombed with blue shells, every single time. I think it happens a lot when I'm on 100cc or 150cc. At least that's what I think since I haven't played Mario Kart 7 in a loooong time.

I always thought I just had bad luck since I've seen other people talk about how great the game is. Honestly, I think the game has some great tracks and I like the kart customization and what not. It's really just the cheap AI that really did it for me. Rarely had I made it through a race, even in 50cc, where I wasn't blue-shelled.

As for Mario Kart 8, I've actually been accustomed to using the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo. I like the way it feels. I'll still use the gamepad on one player occasionally though since other people are usually watching the TV the Wii U is set up to.

The trick with blue shells in 7 is there's rarely going to be more than one other racer, two tops, that'll be anywhere close to keeping up with you. Try to slow down enough to take them out in the blast with you.

Or, well, use a star if you're lucky enough to have it.

The trick with blue shells in 7 is there's rarely going to be more than one other racer, two tops, that'll be anywhere close to keeping up with you. Try to slow down enough to take them out in the blast with you.

Or, well, use a star if you're lucky enough to have it.

That still works in 8 I'd imagine though I've seen people dodge it by using a mushroom boost at the last second.

Yeah, supposedly you can do that, though I've never been able.

Unlocked all the stages and most of the characters, thoughts:

So far I prefer 7. The controls feel looser in 8 somehow, though that may be in part because I never played MKW and still need to get used to the bikes. Most of the new tracks weren't very memorable; Rainbow Road in particular was pretty disappointing, it just didn't have that wow factor the other RRs I've played had. Ironically, it feels like Nintendo tried too hard to make the other tracks too crazy, to the point where it doesn't feel like I'm so much racing as following a path in a video game, if that makes any sense. Mount Wario was probably my favorite out of the new courses. I'm surprised and a little disappointed they didn't do more of the extra-long one-lap courses, I think there was only like three of them, and RR64 was just the original version cut into three sections since it used to take like 15 minutes to do three laps.

On the plus side, 8 is gorgeous and the character selection is a lot better. Nice to see they dumped the characters nobody ever used like Wiggler and Honey Queen. Still, enough babies, Nintendo.

I know about the Blue Shell trick. I just never seem to have enough luck with it. Even if I'm able to get those couple of people behind me, I still get screwed over by some other NPCs behind them. Granted, it wasn't really that way in 50cc, but 150cc for me... let's say luck was not on my side. Many vents were had.

I kinda feel the opposite that you about 8's courses, Fran. I kinda feel like that despite all the graphic overhaul to make the courses look fancy, some of them felt too simplistic. Then again, you can't please everyone! Though, I have the same feelings you do about the new Rainbow Road. It looks gorgeous, but it's meh. I will say it's a nice contrast to the N64 one though in terms of theme. Whereas N64 is magical, the Wii U one is technological, which I think is kinda neat. Kinda wish though that N64's rainbow road could have been two laps though, it just feels too short now.

One thing I did like about Mario Kart 7 is that they had more tracks that divided into 3 parts. I wish 8 would have done more with that. And while I think the anti-gravity is a neat thing, it doesn't change anything really race-wise. Just adds some bumping strategy and I feel that's why a lot of the courses feel too simplistic. Still, it lets the team go and make the courses look great though. I won't lie, this game is gorgeous to look at.

I'm having a lot of fun with the game though, if only because of multiplayer. With the servers working so great, it's fun to race online. Would you ever consider doing online sometime with us, Fran?

Mount Wario is a great map. I also quite like the airport one.

But yeah, to me... The maps were a bit disappointing this time. Not so many maps where I was like "Wow, this map is amazing!"

Overall, though, I'm quite happy with how the game was made.
