Conan isn't a manga that tries to be a story that has a real plot. It's more like a sitcom, it can go on for decades like any detective TV show.

I recently finished reading Fatwa on Terrorism and Suicide Bombings, by Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri. It was a bit repetitive at times, but I'm glad I read it. I doubt I'll be converting anytime in the near future (if ever), but I feel the book has helped me learn more about Islam and strengthened my respect for it.

Admirable read there General, makes me feel bad for sticking to fiction all the time, but I guess I love the adventure.

Working through Ender's Game right now.

Ok so this summer I thought I could read Games of Thrones instead of watching it and I wanted to know if it follow the TV series. Also I have to read 50 shades of grey because my friend is tired of me laughting at it by saying it's just a bad romance and not a very good humm not sure if I can use the word here, but you get the idea. I read some pieces of the book and find it just funny.

50 Shades of Grey is the type of bad fanfiction smut I wrote when I was 12. And this woman who wrote it has no idea about the actual background rules of bondage, so anything of bondage she put into that fanfiction is total crap and wrong. Seriously, I read parts of it and I just burst out laughing cause... okay if it's meant to be a comedy reading, yes. But as an actual serious-to-take and kind-of-erotic story, it fails miserably.

I know (watched nostalgia critic and other guys reading this at a con) and while I didn't gave a crap about the voices they made the text alone was enough to do the show. But I need the privilege to laugh at it so I must read the book.

I'm reading a few books at the moment. The piano teacher by Elfriede Jelinek - which I like quite a lot so far (I loved the movie), Ragionamenti by Pietro Aretino and Teleny by... someone, maybe Oscar Wilde, maybe not. I had really high expectations on the latter (Oscar Wilde has been a minor obsession for years, although I wonder if he really is the author, I can't really recognize his style in that novel), but to be perfectly honest it's cringeworthy. Quite entertaining and fun to read because of the rumors surrounding it, but... no. It's not good.

...and I just realized all three novels are erotic, albeit in very different manners.

Last summer I bought a collection of all 12 Philo Vance books on the kindle to read during my commute. Welp, another summer, and back to reading it... I just finished The Garden Murder Case today, which was the 9th. (I think.) In other words, 3/4th done. Gonna have to look for more books (or video games!) to read for when I finish... I already have And Then There Were None on it, but gonna have to get quiiiite a bit more to last for the whole summer.

Only read the first four Vances, but I thought it was commonly accepted that only the first six novels were alright? Heck, I had even forgotten there were more than six Philo Vances...

I gather that Ellery Queen's nationality novels have been available for e-readers the last couple of years, and those are definitely recommended material if you haven't read them already.

*shrug* The entire pack of 12 books only cost $10, and if I have the books, may as well read them, right? I'm not really critic, but all the books felt about the same to me. I think Van Dine is good at making interesting situations, and doesn't fall into formula. I don't find Vance infuriating, but he is definitely an unlikable jerk.

I read a couple of Queen novels a few years ago, but didn't like them. (Which is when I started reading Carr.) But according to a friend the books I read are to the Queen novels as 2-3 is to Ace Attorney, and I always intended to give Queen a second chance at some point, so I'll check those out once I get up to there.

Reading the Inu Yasha manga. I gave up on the anime a long time ago. I read the last chapter and the extra epilogue, but felt like giving the entire thing a try. And I have to say, at least the manga managed to make me believe Kikyou and Kagome have the same face. In the anime..... i~t didn't work so well. Kikyou looked too different, it was hard to believe that she was reincarted as Kagome with the same face.

I almost did at one point. It sucks when the manga isn't finished before the anime catches up. Fortunately, now it's possible to skip all the filler and then jump to The Final Act.

Finished Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The fuck kind of ending was that, it felt like he suddenly got bored with the chapter, then stopped after his latest sentence. Where's the end? We don't even know if Charlie WILL take over the stupid factory.

Also, as for Inu Yasha, currently on Chapter 345 out of 559, so past the half point, Joybunnies. Although I have to say, while I may start to like KagomexInu Yasha, I STILL don't get SangoxMiroku. All the time, it's just her slapping him for touching her ass (semi-understandable) and overall acting overly jealous to everything.

Hey, this girl says that she (supposedly) slept with Miroku two years ago. Oh wait, that totally gives Sango every right to act like a demon and not care about Miroku and practically wishing DEATH on him! For fuck's sake, Sango, do you even KNOW what time you're in?! You're in Feudal Japan! Men have sex all the time! Quite frankly, I'd be surprised if Miroku hadn't slept with SOMEONE already. Also, it was TWO YEARS AGO, before he even met you OR asked you to move in with him (which I overall still don't see as a real proposal, but fuck it) STOP BEING SO FUCKING JEALOUS OVER EVERYTHING!!

Goddammit, this is EXACTLY why I can't stand tsunderes AND majority of Rumiko's pairings.

I started reading The Returned by Jason Mott yesterday. The whole theme of the book is very catchy and appealing, but I didn't read enough to build a solid opinion on the characters and on the plot.

After I read this book, I couldn't stop reading Agatha Christie for weeks. If you like it, Murder in Mesopotamia is a good option to try later.

Currently reading El Amor en Los Tiempos del Colera (Love in The Times of Cholera) by Gabriel García Marquez. The book is even more of a masterpiece when you read it in Spanish... Both Portuguese and English translations somehow ruined the beauty of it.

Finished And Then There Were None. I was wrong about the killer, sadface :(
Spoiler: ATTWN
I thought it was Emily Brent, who faked her death with Unknown Drug X (a la Romeo & Juliet), and hid in the secret basement. I deduced that the killer was one of the people who was known to be alive at the time of Emily's murder, but... I didn't think Armstrong could/would be that stupid >_>

Honestly, the clues Christie provided to point towards the killer was junk. There was only one 'real' clue (Seton's guilt), and it was pretty poorly handled.

Got through Murder in Mesopotamia and Murder on the Orient Express (...dat solution). I listened to audiobooks for them, so I didn't bother trying to deduce them or anything (although I blindly guessed Mesopotamia's killer!). They were better than... pretty much all the Christie adaptations I've seen so far (which is all I had been experienced to, and which is what I based my distaste of Christie on), but I don't know if this is because all the Christie adaptations in the world suck, or because I've just been reading the best of Christie so far.

I've loaded my kindle up with Ellery Queen, and started The Roman Hat Mystery. The character list was unexpectedly hilarious.

Axlotl Roadkill by Helene Hegemann. I only just started to see if it seemed any good and I have a feeling that I will either read it in one sitting, or take forever to read it because I feel rather weird and bad when I do.
The main character's brother reminds me of a character in a novel I wrote at the age of 21. My sibling, who read the book way before me, said so, and I confirmed it, he really does remind me of my own character.

...now I want to dust off my old novel and rewrite it.

Don't know which Christie adaptations you've seen till now, but the TV series Partners in Crime, Miss Marple (with Joan Hickson) and Agatha Christie's Poirot are all quite good adaptations of the original material (personally, I do think the latter's quality kinda swings from series 10 on though). Oh, and BBC 4's radio adaptations are quite fun too.

And as for And Then There Were None, there are actually more hints than those mentioned in the denouement of the novel. It's written a lot more carefully than a lot of people tend to think. Though I do think the novel's greatest merits are setting, atmosphere and the presentation / plot structure.

Quote:

I quite like Roman Hat, even though it's not as impressive as following novels (from the logic/evidence POV). It's also more of a police investigation novel, featuring a master detective, whereas later novels follow Ellery instead of the old man. But, it does introduce most of the important tropes of the series, so it's probably best to start here (more about Roman Hat).

Finished Awasaka Tsumao's A Aiichirou no Toubou (The Flight of A Aiichirou), a short story collection in the spirit of Chesterton's Father Brown series, where a strange man makes sense out of strange situations. Also, one of the inspirations for GS according t Takumi Shuu.

Yeah Christie has some weird types of hints at times that don't make sense. Like a phone call with someone that, during the solution is revealed to have been to Poirot.

As for Murder on the Orient Express... it's an ethical dilemma. You fully feel and know that the victim deserves to die. But the culprit part... ethical.

Yeah, I noticed more clues while reading (although not enough to completely narrow it down to the killer, obviously), but the clues listed at the very end were pretty bad.

After I finished it, I also reread the killer's introductory segment in the first chapter; I must admit I appreciate the effort Christie (presumably) put in for it to read perfectly fine knowing that person is the killer.

I need to read Catch-22 and Jane Eyre for summer reading - already read the former, have yet to acquire a copy of the latter.
I'm also slowly working my way through The Raw Youth. (Disclaimer: the only reason why it's taking me so long is because I keep putting off actually reading it in favor of fanfiction and manga. Heheh.)

Speaking of Agatha Christie, my mom owns her entire mystery library. I started reading them all in alphabetical order, but as I recall, I only made it to Evil Under the Sun before getting distracted by my dad's huge book of Sherlock Holmes. Seriously, that book is thick... mainly because it has every SH story in chronological order... and it's illustrated and annotated. After reading it, my dad suggested I worm my way into the Baker Street Irregulars, not that I have anywhere to publish in the first place! They don't take applications, you know.
Also I don't think they issue Irregular Shillings to 15-year-olds.

Alphebetical order? That would mean you'd have read Curtain fairly early?!

Read Handoutai Tantei Machina no Miteigina Bouken (The Undefined Adventures of Semiconductor Detective Machina), a cute story where a detective robot and her new owner have to stop three other detective robots with bugs in their programming. It's bit like how Hastings always wonder what the heck Poirot is doing/saying now again: the defect robots all behave somewhat strangely and it's up to the reader to deduce what the bug is in their AI brains.

Just finished The Courts of Chaos, fifth book in the Chronicles of Amber.

Spoiler:
noooo Star, nooo Deirdre (although I guess there's a slim chance she survived? but if anyone made it out of that alive it'd be far more likely to be Brand), nooo Oberon... actually screw him, he was an ultra-manipulative (even for the Amberites) Gary Stu and he pretty much knew ahead of time he was going to die

Pretty great series so far, don't know why I never hear about it. On to the second arc!

Finished Psycho-Logical, the fourth book in the Zaregoto series by Nishio Ishin (also known for Medaka Box and Bakemonogatari). Storywise, it's a bit like the first book, with the narrator and the blue-haired genius / "Dead Blue" Tomo arriving in some remote place and a locked room murder happening, but the focus lies less on the mystery this time and more on the characters. Still a good entry in the series, because the locked room mystery is fun and the narrator's roundabout way of narrating and talking is vexingly and confusingly awesome (always read Zaregoto in Japanese!), but I'm probably stopping with the series here, as the last two books don't feature any mystery at all, it seems.

And reading Kim Nae-seong's 1939 bestseller mystery novel Main (Demon) now. In Japanese, because I can't read Korean (well, I can read it, but I don't understand it). Only halfway through, but having loads of fun. Easiest way to describe the book is 'Edogawa Rampo'. The tropes might be old, but you can tell Kim's having fun with the story, and so am I.

Currently reading A Storm of Swords (Part II: Blood and Gold) by George R. R. Martin. I figured I should read the books after Game of Thrones S4 to keep me entertained until S5 and I honestly wish I'd picked them up sooner.

Case Closed Manga is really enjoyable. I've never watched it's anime counterpart.

Something keeps drawing me back to A Game Of Thrones. I've been rereading a lot of scenes, especially the ones with Dany in them. I've only got the first book in ASOFAI and Seasons 1 + 2. I've been exposed to spoilers, but they don't bother me.
