A few screenshots of the game in French can be found at this topic.
Is anyone else going to play it in French? If so and you get ahead of me then post the names here. I have to speak to my MSN French users to help with the puns. If any of your guys speak very good French and know the puns in the names then then post them in this topic.
I'll copy the meanings of the pun names we already know tomorrow. I may even try and include any other puns and funny text that I understand as well such as 'Gymshoe's' nickname. XD

So far :
La volte-face perdue
Maggey/Maggie Byrde : Maguy/Magui Loiseau
"L'oiseau" means 'the bird'. So the pun with the prince and the bird is intact. Plus, though quite rare, it is actually a real last name.
However, I never heard the names "Maguy" or "Magui". It doesn't sound french at all, which actually makes it really easy to notice the problem with tne name written on the ground, since it will most certainly strike you. Too bad :/
Dustin Prince : Dustin Prince
No change. Prince is the same in french, so it's good they kept it. But they really should have changed its first name. Dustin ? No french name it is, that I tell you.
Richard Wellington : Richard Wellington
Again, no change. Which is plain stupid. We heard so many stupid names in France those last years, with all the crap going on TV, that I find it hard to believe they couldn't find a random super-rich/stupid name for Wellington. You know, like those <Charles-Edouard de la *something*> or <Pierre-Richard le *something*>. Petty names like those would have been PERFECT. We also already have a british in the next game...
But, oh well -_-
Réunion, et volte-face
Pearl/Pearly/Pearls : Pearl/Pearly/Pearls
No change. I have no complain about the name itself, since I don't think a random french girl name would have suited her. Keeping the nicknames unchanged, however, was ridiculous. A la rigueur, Pearly is okay. But Pearls is a big no-no. If they couldn't find anything else, they should have just dropped the nickname thing...
Morgan : Morgan
No change, of course. Though the name "Morgane" exists in french, 'Morgan le Fey' has always been spelled without <e>. No problem.
Turner Grey : Paul Afforme
Stretching a little, 'Paul Afforme' can be read "Pas la forme". <Je n'ai pas la forme> means "I'm not too well / I'm sick".
Thinking back to what I told earlier it is not SUCH a bad pun. But it is really far from the reference to Henry Gray, which was just better. Funny that the only name they really changed so far is the one I think they should have kept (changing the first name, maybe)
Ini Miney : Inès Speray
'Inespéré' can be a synonym of 'miraculate'. Do I need to explain further ? :)
I discovered this one only minutes ago. I really like it. Quite a good pun.
Mimi Miney : Daisy Speray
'Désespéré' means 'Desperate'.
Just discovered it. I'm shocked at how fitting this name and the last one are, while being quite good puns. Quite a change from the first names.
Overall, I'm rather disappointed up until now. But the last two names raised up my hopes. I really hope names for case 3&4 are going to be great.

I'm surprised they changed Maggey's name since it would have involved changing the name on the ground. Shame about it being too easy to notice the contraction.
I would have thought they would have gave Richard and evil rich French name. But no, they don't change it.
I don't get the pun in Inès Speray know. What does it mean by 'miraculate'
I'm interested to see what Adrian's name is.

Well, at least some of the names are getting the attention they deserve. Though, I don't get the fuss about some of them not being French names. When's the last time you saw a guy walking down the street named Phoenix? Or Yanni Yogi for that matter?

Overall, the more I progress into the game, the more I'm disappointed. Some names like Inès/Daisy Speray or Dr. Sashoff are really good, but the overall translation/adaptation is rather bad. Far too much typos, also.
The pun about Inès Speray... I'll try to explain it:
"C'est inespéré" could be translated "I didn't expected things to turn out that way" or "It is a miracle".
As for Dr. Sashoff (Hotti), it is quite simple. "Ca chauffe" means "this is getting hot".

- Script translated from the english version on the fly. The shape of most sentences is very odd, there's very little rewording. In the end, you can almost guess what was originally the english sentence.
- No real effort on the adaptation. While everything in AA1 was done in order to make us believe it was taking place in France (even the cops cars in case 1-5 !), I don't feel like they really tried this time. We end up with oddities like the word "Channneling", which makes no sense at all in french, or some other things which make you feel they really relied too heavily on the US script.
- The writing is irregular. As said previously, most of the sentences are rather badly written, while sometimes characters keep using of good expressions which could make you think they actually worked hard on it... It makes the whole thing looks very strange.
- Inconsistency with elements from AA1. Ie, in AA1-5, the head prosecutor (Lana) title was "Procureur" (as in "Procureur de la République"). However, in JFA it looks like every prosecutor is a "Procureur". Even leaving the point of continuity aside, knowing that there is only one "Procureur de la République" by region (or departement ? Not sure, I'll have to check), calling all prosecutors that way is ridiculous.

Capcom refused to do this so in the end Nintendo of France translated it and did a bloody good job. It seems this time they got a different translates instead.
Not played much of it in French let, the only interesting things I seen so far is the name of the park which I forgotten to right it down, D'OH! and Maggey's name which proved me wrong sine I thought it would have stayed the same or only have her surname changed.
As for the script, it is a bit easy to notice it was based heavily on the English script like Kikuchi said. In fact some of it is so easy to translate the script back into English. I'm a bit worried how Lotta will speak, will she be the same as in PW1?

Lotta speech pattern is almost the same than in AA1 but... I think they just overdid it this time.
It is okay to give her an accent, but not to butcher all her lines with 'Té', 'Peuchère!' or even 'Collègue!', which she never used in AA1 and actually makes her sounds more like a bum than a Marseillaise btw -_-.
Being part of a kinda similar minority (I was born and raised in Bretagne), I'd be REALLY pissed if they putted in a Britain character who ended every single sentence by a word in britain (the language), like AA2's Eva/Lotta.
Oh and I never knew that story about AA1 localization. But it's not that surprising. Nintendo is the kind who would not distribute a game not translated in our country and they probably felt it was worth a try with the first game, since France is in the top 3 of European market, with UK and Germany. That way, they would only have to translate the game in one language, while distributing it in two of the most important markets...
But are you sure that it was NoF and not Capcom that translated the game ? If you told me they funded the localization process (like they for, say, Namco Hometek in the US), I'd understand, but to translate the game thelselves ? They've been translating every recent release by themselves... Ôkami, God Hand, Lost Planet...

I knew a male Andrea years ago, and he was most definitely French. But I don't think I've ran into another one ever since... Maybe it's actually a fairly common androgynous French name?

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if they just didn't understood the puns about Max being a country boy and de Killer being "just anyone". Which is sad.
The overall translation is, as already said, rather poor and has really an unprofessional feeling to it. I refuse to believe these people worked on the first Phoenix Wright, or even took the time to proof-read their work properly...

Andrea isn't the femenine for Andrés (they are completely different names) and it's not just a femenine name. It's more common on girls, but it's also a guys' name. On the other hand, there's "Adriana", which is actually the femenine name for "Adrian". In Spanish there wouldn't be any girl called Adrian.
But as Andrea is more common on girls it would be more realistic that Shelly thought she's a girl when he's actually a guy. However, it'd make more sense than calling her Adrian.
As for Juan Corrida, I can understand why they changed that name. While it's official meaning is bullfighting, it can be translated as "cum" in colloquial language. I'm afraid we're too nasty-minded around here

The UK version of JFA has both French and German versions as well as English, unlike AA, which had English and French.
I'm starting the French version of JFA soon. I'll try and do the German one to find out the names etc., but I only know 'conversational' German (predicted GCSE grade A, that is) so it'll be far too hard for me, I think. Does anyone know German well?
Also, 'Adrienne' is the English feminine version of 'Adrian', from what I know, but it's not completely unheard of to give a girl a 'boy' name. I've never heard of a girl called Adrian, but I have heard of girls with typically boys' names.
And if she was to be called Adrienne, De Killer wouldn't mess up the genders, plus Adrian suits her better :)
