Hopefully, now it won't be too difficult to find that one post you want.

I didn't forget to post an update here; I just wanted to post twice in the span of a couple days, but the latter of the two took me a bit longer than anticipated.

No matter. Go explore. Link's in my sig.

Good to see you back. Sorta interested in playing this case in Japanese again, but on the other hands, it does seem a bit... tiring.

Quote:
’-> As random as the “nose” bit seems, I can see why a translator could mix up what is written in Japanese. He says to Ben “こういうのはなァ、ツカミがダイジなんだよ!” (“What’s worse is your grip on reality!”) But since he adds the な after のは, it comes off as の and はな (‘hana’) = nose. And then he follows it up with: Rilo: As soon as you take the stage, you’re getting a fist in the face!

ツカミ here means to grab the attention of the public, i.e. 'it's important to get the public's attention' (pretty sure Minuki uses this word too at least once). The following sentence (登場したら、まず1発カマす!) in turn is not about punching somebody (though it can mean that), but here it means to do a joke/gag as soon as you appear on stage.

Aww, I liked my interpretation. Thanks. I've updated the post.

Hmm, I haven't actually taken a look through the GS4 script yet, but according to how Jozerick ripped it, the script is set in a completely different order. It's not organized by episode number, but rather locations in the game. The intros of each case is gathered together, along with some case-end scenes but no credits. Then the investigations are ordered by those locations, ending with the scenes in court, and the actual testimonies / cross-examinations follow those. And finally, the credits are shown at the end. To someone checking the first and last files, it seems perfectly in order at first glance.

At least in the GK1 script, the episodes are intact, but the rest of the script still follows the location codes. (Also, the dialogue is not spaced appropriately, so it's easy to get mixed up among which trains belong to which. I dunno if Jozerick could have done something about that.)

I don't know if I could. GK1's script files are pretty weird and I'm glad I at least managed to get the lines in the right order.
In GS1~4 and even GK2, the scripts are well organized and split into parts, so I just read and process the file in order and add extra line breaks between parts.
But in GK1, basically each file begins directly with all the dialogue lines in a seemingly random order, then the second part of the file contains a series of instructions. I only process the instructions that display text on the screen, and haven't researched much aside from that. Maybe there's an instruction that can be used to indicate the end of a conversation and add line breaks. Maybe I should investigate these files further, if only to add the interjections like <Objection!> in the extracted script.

As much as I'd like to purchase a copy for myself, I don't think I'll be able to pass it off as a school text, and my parents are pretty discerning when it comes to online purchases. Maybe if I find it in a library sometime, I'll give it a look. I'm sure it'd help me immensely. It pains me when I meet with nonstandard Japanese, and I end up looking at, say, armadillos on Wikipedia.

Well, 『ヴァーチャル日本語 役割語の謎』 is more about what role language is, and how some role languages came to be, so it is not particularly useful as a reference resource. 『役割語研究の地平』 and 『役割語研究の展開』 (both edited by Kinsui) have more 'practical' research papers, but not all might be as interesting as others. There are to my knowledge no 'role language dictionary'-esque resources, so it's really something you need to get a grip on by getting familiar with all kinds of Japanese languages and cultures, and have a good sense of language

Not sure if you're still doing this, but I wanted to give you a heads-up on Kinsui's recently released 『〈役割語〉小辞典』, which he described as a lighthearted dictionary kind of text on role language (but he stressed it isn't just a reference work, but that you can also 'just' read it). I can't tell you precisely how much of a dictionary it is, as I haven't read it yet (but it's on order!), but it seems to be a fairly reasonably priced reference work on role language, so I thought you might be interested.

Thanks for the heads-up. There are so many books out there that I want to read, but so far, thanks to school clogging up my expenses (and I'm trying to save money by transferring to a less expensive university, but as a result, I have to retake some classes and grrrr), I haven't had the leisure to hop around exploring the world of role language. Or any language for that matter, aside from my personal studies that come about to reviewing vocabulary.

Everyone who's still around, thanks for waiting. Rest assured, I haven't forgotten about this project. Since I have another little project I'm trying to work around, I'll first finish with that before I jump back into this, just so I'm not bouncing back and forth and forgetting something along the way. Expect something next week, but probably not this weekend.

Ciao.

I always find it surprising how you manage to spew out so much posts/text in a short period of time >_>

My last tonkotsu ramen was two, three months ago, but quite delicious. Bummer I couldn't ask for katamen though...That's the only way to eat tonkotsu ramen!

It actually takes me 4-5 hours total to finish through one post in a single go, reading the script, translating and relocalizing, and a little researching. What usually happens, though, is that I spread the workload over the weekends, collect everything together, and if I have enough material for more posts, I make more posts in quick succession.

What is this katamen you speak of? Hakata ramen?

With Hakata tonkotsu ramen, you can usually order the specific 'softness' of the noodles (how long they boil it). The standard terms for ordering are [from really hard to really soft]: konaotoshi, harigane, barikata, kata(men, futsuu, yawa and bariyawa. Noodles turn soggy (のびる) in the hot soup, so you should always choose the hardness you like, keeping in mind that it will grow softer as you eat.

Kata is the 'real' Hakata way to go. Historically, this is also because it's easier to prepare. You earn better with a quick customer turnover rate, so Hakata tonkotsu ramen stands traditionally have smaller, cheaper portions which can be served out faster. The smaller portions is also one of the reasons there's the kaedama (extra portion) custom with Hakata tonkotsu ramen (the other being that it doesn't make sense to order one large portion when eating ramen, because the noodles will go soggy in the soup. It's better to order two portions).[/ramen-lecture]

Don't worry, Hakata tonkotsu ramen is the only kind I can discuss like this

Not to derail my own thread, but This is so interesting. I wish I had a class all about ramen. And this stuff should be free. the class, not the ramen So, do you mean the kaedama custom applies only to tonkotsu, or any Hakata ramen?

Well, Hakata ramen is always tonkotsu ramen, but yes, kaedama are a Hakata ramen custom. You can get kaedama all over Kyushu by the way, but not all ramen restaurants with Hakata ramen outside of Kyushu serve kaedama. Also, when I say tonkotsu ramen, I mean the milky white tonkotsu ramen, like most people in Kyushu. If you're on Honshu, people might misunderstand you for other soups using pork bones, like tonkotsu shoyu soup, or mixed chicken/tonkotsu soups (which are usually relatively clear soups).

(To get really technical: the kaedama custom from Nagahama ramen, which has a distinct different history from Hakata ramen. Hakata ramen comes from Hakata district and is a variant of the original Kurume tonkotsu ramen, where the typical milky white soup was invented by accident. Nagahama ramen comes from downtown 'old' Fukuoka and has a different tradition, including the kaedama (Fukuoka and Hakata used to be seperate cities) . But nowadays, one usually refers to them under the same name of Hakata ramen.)

Sorry!

Well, this isn't from the blog, but it is about one of my planned projects. Here's a little taste of something I've been meaning to do and finally have done.

Beware of random shenanigans.

I've been looking for this video forever, but couldn't remember who made it or what it was called. Then, I learned that it's the same guy who's been doing those awesome Case 4-4 remake videos, where Nick doesn't lose his badge at least, not because of that trial. And then I finally got around to re-uploading it on Youtube with subtitles. Finally, Nicofox got its addresses together and actually worked in a long time. Perhaps I just needed an update.

I may not be completely correct with this, but I can see this metaphor working for her rather well.

Kamiya comes from Kamiya Hideki, Takumi Shuu's collegue at Capcom at the time. I think Takumi said he just happened to spot him at the office while he was thinking of names.

For a lot of names, Takumi Shuu doesn't really choose names based on meaning, actually, just for the feel or the ring to them. Mayoi for example is a symmetric name.

Included these guys for the sake of completion. While the other two names remain unchanged, “Starry School” is actually called “Justice Academy, Year 4, Class 2”.

Is a double play on Kinpachi-sensei and Capcom's own Rival Schools series (Justice Gakuen in Japanese).

Where did you get this from? It seems like a stretch, but it does make sense.

From the horse's mouth.

I don't remember where I read the explanations of the names, but a lot (most?) are explained in some of the older guidebooks. I think most of them are OOP now, but I sometimes come across sites that quote them...

I don't think it was ever mentioned. Maybe Tonosaman Hei! is like a spinoff of the original guy?

Thinking about it again, the Tonosaman series are like a loose metaphor for the GS trilogy. The first one introduces everyone, the 2nd one turns to a completely different theme, and the third one reboots the cast from the first and second. So, if "Samansaman" (Zappy Samurai) is the 4th installment in the series, what would that make of Apollo's debut game?

I don't usually write essays, but when I do, I prefer writing about Ace Attorney. There's so much about it to explore than simply the dialogue trees! *o*

Two new posts for your perusal. Take them in order, please.

Got the role language dictionary I mentioned earlier (金水敏 『〈役割語〉小辞典』) and, if you ever want to delve a bit deeper in the topic, I think this is the most accessible reference work available. It starts with a short introduction about what role language is and the types of role language (divided in gender/age/profession/place of origin etc), which serves as a brief and to-the-point summary of Kinsui's arguments in his previous, more academically oriented books (『ヴァーチャル日本語 役割語の謎』 can still be read as an amusing book on Japanese linguistics, but 『役割語研究の地平』 and 『役割語研究の展開』 are really meant for linguisticians).

The dictionary itself does not feature a big selection of entries (a bit more than 100, I think), but it covers the most 'obvious' examples of role language markers with excellent descriptions. For 「ぼく」 for example, it mentions where the word originated from, in what types of role language it is used, the 'role' (stereotype) connected to the word, similar words, examples from anime and manga, the negative aspects of the word and even about the usage by women of the word. The dictionary does not only feature nouns, but also verbs (あかん) and adjectives (よか) etc.

Sweet. If you ever think about sharing a few points, feel free to. This thread is yours as much as mine. After I'm finished with this case, I think I'll hop back into this stuff. I've been a little impatient, actually.

The next two posts are up as well; though the second one is much shorter than anticipated. Perhaps I can get to the next two parts sooner. I'm nearing the end of this game.

Aaaaand finally got around to getting something out. It may come off as a little more casual than serious, but heck, when has this blog ever been "serious" besides being seriously exhausting to maintain?

The next part ought to come up within 24 hours. But first, give me at least a thirty-minute break...

In hindsight, maybe next time I should do the character analysis myself. These two recent posts have become theatrics at their very basis.

On the other hand, it was a very refreshing exercise to stretch my writing skills a bit.

In any case, I'm returning to the main project by next week. Enjoy the read or go ahead and criticize me for my shameless squandering of your time.

Hi, guys. I'm back.

I wonder where Ash has gone. He hasn't come by to correct me on anything that may need clarifying. Is this a good or bad sign?

I figured posting everytime might be a bit obtrusive.

Quote:
Doug Swallow - Honda Kikuzou (呑田 菊三)

Typo -> Nonda.

Quote:
> Ron Delite - Amasugi Yuusaku (天杉 優作)
aka Mask☆deMasque - “The Phantom” Kamen Mask (怪人☆仮面マスク)
'amasugi', written differently, means “too sweet” or “too naive”. Yuusaku is a pretty common name and is often written as above, but not so coincidentally, the kanji in Yuusaku here can be literally translated as “skilled work”.

Yuusaku comes from famous actor Matsuda Yuusaku, famous for things like Tantei Monogatari (the TV series) (not to be confused with the film with the identical name which also features Matsuda).

Quote:
> Desirée Delite - Amasugi Mareka (天杉 希華)
Thinking about it, she’s super sweet and naive like her husband… The kanji in her name come to “rare beauty”, and it rings true in more ways than one.

Can't remember what guide mentioned it, but Mareka is the name of Takumi's old childhood friend.

Quote:
> Kane Bullard - Busujima Kurobee (毒島 黒兵衛)
'busui' means “boorish, inelegant”. The rest of the meaning behind his name comes from the kanji themselves.

The name is derived from KB警備 -> KB -> initials.

Quote:
> The Tiger - Zenitora (ゼニトラ)
aka Furio Tigre - Shibakuzou Toranosuke (芝九蔵 虎之助)

The tiger & dragon are rivals (for example, west (byakko) VS east (seiryuu))

Quote:
Viola Cadaverini - Shikabane Urami (鹿羽 うらみ)

Trivia: Takumi had also played with the name Shikagane (鹿金) -> 鏖 (みなごろし), but that would be a bit too terrifying.

Quote:
Elise Deauxnim - Tenryuusai Elise (天流斎 エリス)
Elise comes from the name of a major character in the short story The Dancing Girl, or in Japanese as Maihime, by the famed writer Mori Ougai, famous for leading modern literary criticism in Japan during the Meiji Period.

Note that the link is made because she's Ayasato Maiko: Maiko -> Maihime

Aha, I knew Shigaraki was inspired by someone in particular, but I couldn't remember his name. Thanks!

...Oh, right. I should get started on the next part. I'll go do that.

Welp, I'm back from a week of restlessness and proceeding with more of this not-resting. What a wonderful arrangement. Anyway, the next part should arrive in a few hours.

『上がらない ウダツこづかい 肩アタマ』
[ agaranai, udatsu kodzukai, kata atama ]

"udatsu ga agaranai" = no hope for improvement; "kodzukai" = pocket money; "kata" = shoulder; "atama", in this case, is "on top".

I figure this last part refers to a “burden” set on one’s shoulders. Money problems, check.

Can't raise anything / Job prospects, pocket money / My shoulders, my head

(As in: I won't get a promotion, my wife won't give me more pocket money, my shoulders hurt and I can't say no to anyone)

Quote:
『はかなげな 日かげに咲いたタンポポのような たたずまい』
[ haka nage na, hikage ni saita tanpopo no you na, tatazumai ]

"haka nage" = without progress; "hikage" = shade; "saita" = bloomed; "tanpopo" = dandelion; "you" = likeness; "tatazumai" = appearance, shape.

…which is to say, “a dandelion in the shade that has yet to bloom”, or in courser words, “someone who hasn’t hit puberty yet”. (Good thing the locale team kept this joke in there somehow!)

A feeble figure / Just like a dandelion / Growing in the shade

(As in: he looks as if he could wither away any minute now)

Forgot to mention it last time, but Chinami can actually also be written as 千尋. Also, 美/柳/ + /千/尋 -> せん柳 -> 川柳. But probably coincidence.
