"Your relationship with Jude is intense and deep. You are best buddies!"
Alright! What do I get? Oh, Fennmont is highlighted! Let's go see what I get for becoming best buds with Jude. :redd:

:phoenix: "Ludger, we're such good friends."
:redd: Yea-heah, I know.
:phoenix: "Do you want to change the name of our Linked Mystic Arte?"
> I'd like to keep Wrath Of The Heavens
> Let's change it to Judgement Of The Heavens
:redd: ...................what.

"Congratulations! You can now change your Linked Mystic Arte's name with Jude by talking to him in Fennmont!"
What? That's... THAT'S IT? THAT'S my huge, fucking reward for getting my affinity with Jude the highest? I get to rename a fucking Mystic Arte that I, up to that point, hadn't even used? After I sprayed my potion of friendship all over him, he only gives me a "Thanks, best bud" and a handshake, without even a happy ending? Oh, sure, I get a recolor of Ludger's shirt, but... seriously?

Team Destiny, what the hell? Why do your rewards suck so much? Now I wish Team Symphonia had handled this game, I probably would've gotten something better out of getting the affinity so high. At least there, I had some minor story changes, depending on my partner in Flanoir. Jeez...

PS: Anyone wondering why I picked Phoenix for Jude, well, he's voiced by Sam Riegel. That's why.

Wow.

I think it's pretty common knowledge at this point that GameFAQs contests are a huge load of bull, but Super Mario 3 getting destroyed by Pokemon Red/Blue is like a perfect, shining example of that.

Out of the games shown there, I cannot vote. Link to the Past VS Some Game I Don't Know/Remember Playing? Not picking either. Ditto Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy IV. Hey, I brought in Tales of the Abyss, why is that not anywhere? It's a damn good game.

Niche-Schmiche, they've become pretty popular, mostly due to Symphonia and/or Xillia. I know that Europe is still getting reamed up the ass with Tales at times, but it overall has gotten better. (And I'd say VI was a better FF than VII, but that's kinda known here)

So! My reward for going through the extra dungeon in Xillia 2 is the option to waste in-game Ancient Bells... to transform my party into other characters. ...Xillia 2's rewards for doing obonoxious things SUCKS. What happened to the way things were in Symphonia, Abyss or even Phantasia? (Oh, right: they were all created by a different team than Xillia/Xillia 2 and similar)

Tales of Symphonia made it in... and lost in the first round.

Pretty much the expected showing.

I'm sad AA, T&T, 999, and VLR all lost in the first round though. Didn't expect them to win, but I wish at least one could've made it to the second round... There was some pretty bad luck in their match-ups, tho.

If we're talking about Persona 4's PS2 version, I'd totally vote for it.

Hey, am I doing something WRONG for side-stepping in Xillia 2? I only manage foreward and backward steps, but not side-stepping. Either the guide I looked at gave me wrong info (and I keep forgetting to check the in-game battle tips cause I have the memory of a wet brick) or I need to unlock a skill to do it... :ron:

Yeah ME2 I'd probably rate higher than the third (though worse than ME1). Those are some really hard match ups, all bigger well-known names.

Still they are well known for a reason, no shame in losing to them.

Yeah, I don't like that character, so I wouldn't use him. I might use Driselle. I like her outfit. (How about making THAT an unlockeable outfit, not a character-change?)

Quote:

X? Why would I hit the attack button when I want to side-step? (I tried Square and O, the latter which the guide mentioned, so no, I didn't try it with X yet)

Then again, tempted to just get the other ending, then do NG+, fuck the debt. (Though post-game and then making me go throug the ending again... Graces already had that problem, resulting in removing any desire to actually replay the game... But I gotta fill the time somehow, until Xillia arrives - which still hasn't been sent out yet)

Yeah, I did it by accident, then figured it out. You have to press L1 + Up/Down and then press X/Attack Button. I thought it was simultaneously or L1 + X/Attack Button and then Up/Down. That seems really, really dumb. I know Graces removed jumping, but it was much easier, just press L1 and moving, I think. Or L1 + Guard and moving.

They're not at the popularity level of Mario/Zelda/Final Fantasy/etc.

But yes VI is best Final Fantasy

I've only played one of those so can't really comment. I should really play through it again but Portal 1 is so much shorter...

My biggest gripe with Red/Blue doing so well is they've probably aged worse than any other games in the contest. They're a buggy, totally unbalanced mess, and considering Fire Red/Leaf Green are improvements in every way (unless you just want to screw around abusing glitches), it's ridiculous to even consider Red/Blue the BEST GAEMS EVUR

How can something be the best if there's something that's flat-out better?

Fran, you know good and well that many people on the internet tend to forget to take off these little things called nostalgia goggles. Combine that with the fact that Pokemon is the most popular franchise out there and I'm guessing because the games just came out again on the 3DS so there's even more hype, it's easy to see how they're gaining so much leeway.

But from a personal standpoint, I completely agree with you 100%. Definitely far from the best game ever.

I will disagree with you on another thing too. FFVI is third best. IV is first and IX is second. It's good you have your own opinion, but mine are always right. *sarcasm*

How can FF IV be better than VI? At least VI had the balls to kill off more than one character and stick to it. IV was a punch in the face with its repeated 'sacrifcies' and "Oh my God, (character) is dead!" yet all of them, except for Tellah, are back in one big, epic cutscene. Heck, the early party of Kungfu Guy and Edward got two deaths!

Also, Kefka was a much better villain. Golbeza... only thing I know or care about him, anymore, is what Hyadain says in his song of the Four Elemental Lords. And even then, Zemus? Kind of out of nowhere and easy to defeat.

The reason why Final Fantasy IV is my favorite is because each character is unique in battle, they each fill a role. The story, you're constantly moving forward, something is always happening, so you always feel the sense of urgency. And I enjoy how the sidequests serve as having some relation to adding to the plot and the game doesn't oversaturate itself with too many. Plus, the rewards from the sidequests are more than worth it so I love doing them. And the music is top notch.

I love FFVI too. Technically, yeah, it is the overall better game. But the problems that I have with it that keep it from being the best for me are as follows.

With the way the summons work in the game, every character eventually serves as a carbon copy of each other with the exception of their unique ability. Basically, I can eventually have characters like Setzer filling in the role of Black Mage just as much as Terra and I prefer having my characters each being unique. You can argue I can make it that way, but I prefer when the game sets limitations so it forces me to strategize instead of cheesing it.

If the second half of FFVI was as amazing as the first half, it'd instantly be my favorite. The first half kept me on my toes, I was constantly having stuff to do, and the story kept up an amazing pace, and I always felt the sense of urgency. And then halfway through it all comes to a dead halt. I no longer have an amazing villain to chase, no big urgency to do anything anymore. And the second half becomes pretty much nothing but a huge amount of sidequests. There's still some interesting things, but for me personally, after getting so much of how Kefka is during the first half, it's real disappointing when I don't even see him at all during the second half until the very end of the game. And I don't feel the urgency because really, the world has already been destroyed and all Kefka is doing is sitting on his butt chilling. I just really hate the pacing of the second half of the game.

Really, it's simple reasons for me why I prefer IV over VI. I don't expect people to understand, but I just always found FFIV to keep me engaged more. And before I'm accused of nostalgia, it's not. I didn't get into the FF series until my senior year of high school around 10 years ago and my first entry was FFX. I ended up playing IV and VI much later around the same time, and just liked IV a bit more. And while VI has more fleshed out characters, it's not enough to win me over because of how bare the second half is for me.

Also, Cat, if I really go by your argument, you could say FF2 is the best Final Fantasy game because it had the balls to kill off every single character that ever came into your fourth slot save for the pirate girl and your final party member. XD

I personally found FF4 underwhelming and dated. The plot didn't feel like anything special, and the battle system was plain ol' boring. I never actually finished it because I got to the final dungeon but then felt the battle system was too tedious to do the grinding necessary to get through it.

I never finished FF6 either, but found it way better. I don't think I need to make much of an argument for the first half. The second half wasn't nearly as exciting, but I stopped just because I got stuck on a boss xP

Ahahahahaha! Oh, yeah! People trying to tell me Ocarina's GC/N64 version is just as good, if not better, than the 3DS port. It's hilarious.

Quote:

...I might need to rewatch my FF IV LP, I do not recall a sense of urgency...

But, unfortunately, this backfires, because you pretty much have to use a certain character in a certain way, if you want to get some good work out of them. You need to use Rosa as your White Mage and primary Healer, because her Archer-side is okay, but ultimately sucks, because she is designed to be a white mage. (If she's supposed to be my healer, WHY give her Archery as well? Abyss had Natalia be an archer and a healer - and she was made different from Tear, by using more physical artes and focusing on single-character healing and some buffs, whereas Tear was a party-healer)

VI had the fact that, yeah, I could make everyone kind of a carbon copy (though Tina or Celes would still have higher magic than non-default-magic characters) but it did allow me to use my preferred party members.

Quote:
And while VI has more fleshed out characters, it's not enough to win me over because of how bare the second half is for me.

Technically, one could proceed in the second half to immediately confront Kefka. Which, I'm sure, has been done already with lots of grinding and/or cheated up levels. The rest is optional, but does involve advancing the character development for majority of them - which I love. They're not stagnant. Tina has realized that, yes, she can love despite not being a normal human woman (and I love that she realized this by caring for children, not by falling in love with a man) and realizes how she hates fighting, but is willing to do it, for the sake of protecting people.

I guess character development is more important for me. It makes it easier for me to care, which was a problem for me in IV. They didn't care about much development, they had stagnant characters and told me to give a crap, now let's go ride a space whale ship to the moon.

Quote:

I think IV was underwhelming because it was, well, same Crystal stuff as I've played before. I played V (or VI, simlutaneously) first, so I already knew about Crystals and what not. Then they made Rosa unavailable and the Damsel in Distress for a somewhat large portion of the game, the horribly contrived "Give last crystal to bad guy, you freaking dolt!" and Kain's repeated betrayal/manipulating was boring. Nothing in the game really felt epic - not even the Giant of Babel, who I hated cause the dungeon inside was boring.

The battle system was okay... it's the same as I had played before (which is a problem with most FF games, until about X or XII, depends) so it was familiar enough to not cause problems. But it being the same made it boring, lacking innovation.

But the final boss was such a letdown. "Oh, yeah, I'm a dude who was behind this all the time. I have no real reason to do anything, just everything destroying. Yay." and the battle was boring, too. (The music was okay, at times) Kefka was a threat from the beginning, before stepping it up. Heck, Exdeath was the culprit the entire time.

I already have a bunch of games lined up to play and yet I still want to look at Final Fantasy XIV. I've only a little bit of experience with MMOs and the other one I play is very grindy. XIV seems better but I doubt it would be much fun to play if I don't know anyone else who plays it. Hm.

Um... okay. I'm not wanting to sit here and argue for no reason about what Final Fantasy is better. Am I not allowed to just state an opinion and just say I like FFIV the most without an unnecessary argument needing to arise? Please don't try to convince me to change my opinion because yours is different. All I was doing was saying why I liked it more than VI. I don't know why it has to turn into a debate.

Ahahahahaha! Oh, yeah! People trying to tell me Ocarina's GC/N64 version is just as good, if not better, than the 3DS port. It's hilarious.

Oh god, that sounds like an entertaining read. What are their "arguments" like? Something like "The low frame-rate was what made the game special and the 3DS ruined it"?

It's probably the fact that Ruto is covered up this time around. But seriously, mapping the iron boots to the items menu makes OOT3D better by default. Flipping Water Temple and having to open up the pause menu every time I needed to change my buoyancy? What were the original devs thinking?

Sorry, I should have stated that I was addressing that to Cat. XDDDD

Things like, oh, the Redeads aren't scary with the updated graphics - I kinda agree with that, I think they look laughable.

I already have a bunch of games lined up to play and yet I still want to look at Final Fantasy XIV. I've only a little bit of experience with MMOs and the other one I play is very grindy. XIV seems better but I doubt it would be much fun to play if I don't know anyone else who plays it. Hm.

My husband says it's a very fun game. I'd like to try it myself, but have no money for the subscription and don't know if my PC can handle the game. And even the PS3 version requires subscription.

Um...

Oh, no, no, that wasn't my intent. You have every right to state your opinion. I guess my discussing it sounded too harsh. I'm sorry.

Honestly, I'm glad that I don't have to look at pre-teen Ruto's prepubescent pube hair growing in her crotch. Plus, I rather like the change to making her look a bit covered up. At least her breasts aren't looking like flat-diamonds, which I find very unsexy.

And yes! Boots being equippable items is just plain better. It was good in Wind Waker, no idea why it wasn't done in Ocarina's release or why people complain about it in the 3DS version. It's just plain more convenient. (Doesn't change the difficulty of the Water Temple, it's still just as tedious as it was 17 years ago)

It's okay, Cat. I might have read too much into that myself. XDDDD But, thanks. =)

I found 96 cats in Xillia 2. What's my reward for collecting all 100, aside from giving King Rollo his empire, as he deserves?

You raaaaaaaang?

I can get you in and involved if you like?

You get a free trial but the subscription is still like £8.99 a month ain't doing nothing about that if you want in the long haul.

You could join our FC (guild/clan/etc) if you like. We got my girlfriend and some other folks in it. Pretty small so you hopefully wouldn't feel overwhelmed and my girlfriend has plenty of contacts in the community to keep you with plenty of people to play with.
