Even after seeing episode 1, I can't help but say that this one was SUPER quick. Combining both the trial and the following investigation day in 20-ish minutes, yikes. They zoomed through it all. Loved the flashback to young Mia and even younger Maya, though. DL-6, son.

Redd White is still the largest ham I've ever seen, also. Even moreso in Japanese. Holy shit.

I don't have much to add onto my previous thoughts of the show except this episode is pretty good at building up the suspense/drama gradually. I honestly think they're doing a good job with the pacing, unpopular opinion I think, and there has been good characterization all around so far.

They cut the bellboy testimony. And the visit to April in the detention center.

I've not much to comment in this episode. Just that Edgey's face, though funny, seems of quite a bit :/ And pacing was a bit fast. But understandable. Ah well. Like I previously said, watch the series with lowered expectations and you'll learn to enjoy it more. Also, I truly feel like the anime is deviating a bit from the game, in a good way, really. Can't really tell why, but I feel so.

It was okay, I guess.

The production values were very bad in this one, even compared to the first two episodes. One of the few things I thought was kinda okay about the last two was the backgrounds, they were consistently "okay", but this episodes backgrounds looked AWFUL. Like, really, really bad. I even recall the courtroom changing colour, it was incredibly jarring. The animation was again, terrible, but this was like, a whole new low. The two characters that bothered me the most were Edgeworth and Redd White, they were consistently wonky looking.

And they are doing what I dreaded most from this adaptation, the Seiji Kishi tier "I'll throw in refrences to gameplay mechanics to get some nostalgia out of the fans" trash directing. Like, why? It is so awkward. The objection bubble thing annoys the hell out of me in particular. It is so unnecessary. It didn't even happen in the first episode so they are just being inconsistent with it. I hate it so much. The text box thing bothered me enough, I don't need more of it.

They also brought the outdated autopsy report out of nowhere. They didn't even mention it in the last episode. In the show, Nick makes a big deal about not knowing about the new autopsy, when we don't even see him receive the outdated one. The pacing of the episode also felt very off, they skipped out a lot of the details.

Okay, on to positives.

I liked the music and it's integration. It just works, especially compared to the last episodes. Also, on the sound front, I think the voice acting is great.

There were some scenes in particular that I really liked. The one with Phoenix and White was pretty great. I really liked the lighting in that scene, how it took place during sunset. The more intense colour palette helped get across the, well, intensity of the scene. It was good. I also like the scene between Phoenix and Grossberg about DL-6 incident. That's about all I have to say about it though.

Not as good as episode two, but nowhere near as bad as episode one.

6/10
Redd White was pretty funny.

I really wish they'd dedicate a full episode to each half of the day. So an episode for each investigation segment, and then an episode for each trial segment too.
They skipped a bit too much to my taste for the sake of fitting a whole day into one episode

What they did show, though, was really good. It had the right suspense, drama and humor. I particularly liked April May, and not even for the fanservice. I was really curious how she'd translate to anime, and she translated perfectly. Though, speaking of fanservice...

Yeah this is really starting to look like a series you'd watch when you want to remember the general story in the game, rather than something that can stand on its own. A big part of the fun in mysteries is being able to figure things out as you watch, but that just isn't possible when you don't get to see half the evidence until Phoenix whips it out in court to prove a contradiction you didn't know existed until he brought it up.

Too much stuff cut too; I understand there's a need but cutting April in the detention center kills the chance of feeling any sort of sympathy for her and turns her into a one-note lackey for White. Ditto for the bellboy; he was already pretty one-note but now he's like... half-note? Quarter-note?

I don't think the series is terrible but it certainly feels like it could be a lot better.

also I already mentioned it but some of those faces, just, god

Animators, please

Focus a little more on making the characters not look like shit and a little less on completely pointless close-ups of Maya's feet

You're highly exaggerating. This only happened with the autopsy report as I recall, and all other evidence Phoenix has used we saw him collect or otherwise receive in the anime. And with the autopsy report, while it would've been nice to see Phoenix explicitly receive it, it can easily be implied that the Defense always gets a copy of the autopsy report too

In the game, the updated autopsy report stated, "But there is a possibility the victim lived for several minutes after the blow." That's clear and concise. "Died pretty much instantly" is so vague that I'm having a hard time believing that it could actually prove anything.

I'm sure others have noticed that the anime is answering questions that ought to have been asked in the games. For example, the clock is revealed to be empty, and Edgeworth theorizes that it fell out when Mia was hit with it, since the clockwork was on the ground.

Who's the VA for Redd White? When I get the chance, I'm asking e-Capcom for an autograph.

Just when I thought the pacing from last episode couldn't get more rushed, but it did. If this keeps up, we'll end this series with Nick throwing de Killer onto Engarde in a shower of sakura confetti and then cut to "THE END".

I don't have a problem with Nick getting the autopsy report off-screen, I have a problem with it being used to prove a contradiction before the audience even knows what it says. The same thing happened in the first case, too. It's not a huge issue, but it does give the impression (at least to me) that the animation team kind of went "yeah, yeah, you guys have already played this game plenty of times, let's keep things moving and not bore you with details on an autopsy report."

Caught up this week after missing last week's. I think the investigation scenes are working better than the court scenes because they get a chance to flesh out the Japanifornia world more than the games did. Both eps were a step up over episode one.

One thing that was bugging me: the perspective was way out of wack in the courtroom scenes in episode 3. Everyone seemed to keep changing sizes.

Ah, yes. I see what you mean. I think they made that change to make Edgeworth seem more... scummy. To construe an argument from something so vague just to pull the case to his favor again, instead of interpreting facts for their likely meaning.

I see what you mean. Yeah, I think this anime doesn't go for the typical mystery story, where the audience plays a part in trying to figure out what happened, but rather to make for some tension and drama. And frankly, I think they succeeded.
It's a different take on the story. Instead of allowing the audience "play the game", they let the cast play the game, and we're here to look at it from the outside

Yeah, I agree. I love the investigation scenes whereas the court scenes are simply... just fine. The new things we get to see in the investigations makes watching the anime well worth it for me

This episode was pretty good. It seemed kind of rushed, but I feel like important events still got the attention they deserved (especially the meeting with Redd White). I am kind of dissapointing that they cut the Bellboy's testimony. Even if it technically wasn't necessary, I always liked him.

It was not bad, in my opinion. The animation was really bad, and things are happening too much fast, but the plot is working and we still can understand the story, even if ou haven't played the games, but you have to be patient, because the animation quality is very low, but in the 2nd episode, it was not bad, so I don't get the point. Watch this with low expectations, so you can be surprised. :grey:
