"Interrogations and searches" André tutted and swore something foreign as he discarded his cigarette "To think that's what this will all come to. Not the friendly frontier life I had had in mind." He sighed and looked towards Esther's house.

"At the least we should maybe ensure all our friends are together...safer that way no?" He said over his shoulder as he walked off to knock on Esther's door.

Avis nodded. "Of course. We should set up some safety measures, such as a curfew. As for an interrogation, it would probably best to hold one tomorrow, after we've investigated. The mayor's home would be the best place to start." She walked up to the door of the late mayor's home and fiddled with the door knob, trying to get inside.

The door to the town hall opens. Could someone have picked at the lock on the door? Inside is a quaint study, with a desk built in the corner, bookshelves filled with mundane legal documents and paperwork, and a small bedroom in the back. Everything seems to be normal apart from a few black blood stains on the desk and on the floor. Certain stains make it seem like something was dragged in them.

"More scare tactics, then?" Jonas commented once the skeleton and the journal page were revealed. Maybe it was his resolve, or maybe it was his skepticism, or maybe it was that the remains weren't of someone he had spent any time with, but he wasn't nearly as shocked at the revelation.

"I agree with Vaughan and Pétur," Jonas said after thinking for a moment, adding sternly, "I do not want to mistrust any of you. You all seem like rather upstanding people. However, if any of you do turn out to be untrustworthy, expect no leniency. That said, precautions and preparations would be more effective than outright distrust, accusations, and brutality, in my opinion."

"Hmmm..." Avis knelt down next to the blood stains. "The mayor was most likely dragged across the floor after he was killed. Meaning, of course, he was killed indoors." She frowned. "When I examined the body earlier, I don't believe I saw any cuts or gashes. How exactly then did this off-color blood come out of him? Unless, of course, it was not his blood to begin with."

André's smile softened as Esther gave him her hand and he gently led her down the stairs like a princess.

"Think nothing of it Esther, the pleasure is mine to be graced by your company. We'll keep you safe" He said leading her back towards the group, making sure to place himself between the body and Esther so she need not look at it again.

Releasing Esther's hand once safely at the group André coughed to get everyone's attention.

"Alright then, since we don't know who did this we are going to take every precaution to find out what is going on here." He nodded to Avis and Cooper "What we suspect is that there is a small group of...troublemakers...who did this to our poor mayor and possibly the other most soul we found the other day."

André clapped his hands together to ensure everyone was still awake "SO...what people have proposed is house searches and..." André pulled a face clearly not liking the word "...interrogations." He shook his head sadly "Still with a murder in our midst such dire measures are necessary no?" He gestured to the others with a smooth flowing sweep of his arm

"We can talk about the specifics of it later but for now do we all agree that this is the way forward for our wonderful community?"

Esther steeled herself and stepped out from behind André, giving him a quick nod to let him know it was alright. As he spoke, she slowly raised her gaze until she was looking at the bones that had been found during the team's expedition, and on shaky legs, she walked to it. She crouched and picked up the journal page.

"They found me."

There was nothing notable about it, except the shaky handwriting. Of course it was shaky. Whoever wrote this was probably panicking - they must have known that they were not long for this world. Esther closed her eyes, lowered her head, and tried to steady her breathing.

And then Forsythia spoke.

"A what?" Esther turned around. "A seance? Is there a medium among us?"

André was about to stop Esther but she seemed alright examining the body and so he nodded with satisfaction "Yes Esther its true. Emilia claims to have the gift of speaking with the dead." He held his hands up in an exaggerated shrug.

"I won't say its for everyone but by all means we should use all our special...talents to solve this." He gave Emilia a slight smile "I hope you won't mind if I need more evidence than a séance to be satisfied however."

Giving Forsythia an amused look he gestured to her "Ah it is good to see you again Forsythia, truly you are a font of grace in this village." He said beaming despite the circumstances. "We never got to finish our conversation yesterday though, you said you thought it was a hex that killed the mayor?"

Esther slowly stood up as she listened to the others, a look of dawning realization spreading across her face.

"We should try it!" she blurted out. Almost as soon as she spoke, she flushed with embarrassment. "I mean . . . What would the harm be? If it turns out to be untrue, then we have only wasted some time. But if there is a way to contact Mayor Timm and -" her voice cracked "- and this person here . . ." She gestured to the skeleton. "Well, it could be invaluable."

Desperately, Esther turned to Emilia. "Please, could you try? And Cooper -" she swiveled to look at him "- will you promise not to harm her or turn her in? She could - she could do some real good, if she is telling the truth."

"The way I see it, there are two options. Either she's telling us the truth, and she's a witch. Or she's lying to us, which would mean she's trying to dissuade us from finding the real killer, which could only be her. Sheriff's office sounds like best bet either way." He began to unravel some of the rope hanging from his belt as he spoke. "I guess there's a third option too, where she's insane or some kind of zounderkite. In which case Sheriff's office is still best bet--I'm sure they can find her a place to get her the help she sorely needs."

At Pétur's comment, Cooper turned to him. "Don't worry, it's not a venture I'd call myself inexperienced with. As long as I had some kind of map out of these woods..."
