To Mr. Bledsoe,

I am unclear as to how someone from the upper cavern would be able to slay Ms. Church with an icicle. Could you elaborate?

Sincerely,
Shizune Takata

“Of course.” Benjamin smiles politely at her. “Bruce would transport Charlie’s body to the killer at a specified time, very likely 6:00. Charlie was likely in the box, but she might not have been. It doesn’t matter. Either way, she was small enough where an icicle could’ve killed her.”

“There’s no point in using Bruce as correspondence if Seb’s accomplice were in the lower cavern. That’s what I believe at least.”

“Why’s that? Wouldn’t it still be suspicious if anyone from the lower cavern and Sebastian were chatting often? Or what if someone overheard them?” Bennett sighs. “I feel like Brucey would be essential either way.”

"We only have four possible suspects." Benjamin summarized. "Seb, for obvious reasons. Daniel and Bennett, as they both didn't have an alibi during dinner. And finally Ivan, as he was the one working on the ice wall and the only evidence we have to suggest anything happened is there--namely Charlie's blood."

"Excuse me? When did I become a suspect?" Ivan snapped. "Sebastian and I both heard Mrs. Church at the meeting room, which Belphegor confirmed. At that time, I did not have the spear on hand, and I have several alibis past the meeting room."

"...And while the lack of alibis are certainly a problem, I...am hesitant to call either one a suspect..."

"I am just being thorough." Benjamin explained. "That entire testimony with you and Seb could be a fabrication, but I don't believe that that situation is probable. It is down to Daniel and Bennett, and we need a way to narrow it further."

"I don't know how to clear my name, soldier. However, I can tell I would never murder anyone in my unit. That's something I'm physically incapable of doing." Daniel says, with hint of pride in his words.

"If I were the murderer, I probably wouldm't have gotten the typewriter back to that soldier," He vaguely points to Shizune. "But that's really all I can say. I'm sure you soldiers will be able to find me innocent."

"Oh... Yeah, I did all of it," Seb nodded uncomfortably. "I was only given basic instructions for what the killer wanted, the rest I had to figure out myself. The last message I received from them was at around 3:50.

"First I... had to aggravate Charlie. I was the one who stole something from her - it was her boots - and I used it to find out her weakness. 'She attaches herself to her material possessions, puts herself ahead of others, and is extremely greedy and petty.' I hoped to use her pettiness to lure her into the circle later, so I started that argument in the meeting room to get her agitated.

"I realised shrinking her would be a good way to transport her, so, after everyone else left I went out to get the magic tome and a can of red paint. I then painted out the magic circle from the book, and hid it under the rug. I also realised the jewellery boxes in the room would make a good container for carrying Charlie in.

"At 5:00 Charlie came in to talk, as planned. She walked right over the rug with the circle under it, so I was able to shrink her and quickly put her inside the box. The box muffled her, so no-one could really tell where she was exactly. The amulet didn't shrink though, so I had to put that around her neck later when she regrew. Of course, I didn't realise she normally wore it around her arm. With the circle's purpose met I then took some time cleaning it up again.

"After that I needed to get Ivan out of the way. That's where the picture came in. I went upstairs to 'check on' Oliver, and while there I took the camera. I don't think he noticed. Then I went back, took a picture of Charlie inside the stone-grey box, and asked Bruce to deliver it to Ivan. Ivan came running to check on us all, as expected, and so as soon as he left the meeting room to talk with the others, I quickly left and fulfilled my end of the arrangement. That's when I... had to knock her out."

He was looking pale and a little nauseous now, but he forced himself to carry on. "After she was killed, I had to clean up the scene. This, at least, I was more familiar with. I put the necklace around her neck, then dragged her over to the water to stab her with the spear, so her blood would wash away. I spent as much time as I could cleaning up to remove blood from the area, then ran back to the meeting room. A little after that was when the others entered and we started discussing what had happened to Charlie."

Brandy, having snapped out of the trance she had been in for the entire trial, looked at Sebastian with a solemn expression.

"Disregardin' the fact that you seem to have done jus' 'bout everythin' except murder Charlie... why would you even agree to assist with this? I'm gettin' sick of hearin' all this noise... and I can't believe you... you helped!"

She pounded her fist on the podium before her. "But God damn it, why the hell can't you jus' say who you were helpin'? "

"So..." Oliver began, glaring at Sebastian. "You did EVERYTHING except commit the actual murder?"

He scowled a bit, quite uncharacteristic of him. "Why? Why go through all of that trouble to help out the murderer? Did you want her dead? What made you decide to help the criminal who killed her? Unless this all an elaborate fabrication, and you're the actual murderer?"

He sighed, trying to settle himself down a bit. "And another question. Do you know the identity of the person you were writing to?"

"The one who killed Charlie... Of course I know them. They're the one I 'work' for," Seb replied, once again looking down at his shaking hands as they gripped the podium.

"This is far from the first time they've killed. All those bodies we've been finding down here? They killed them, and I cleaned up afterwards. What choice did I have? They might have killed me if I didn't comply, just another body to add to the list. When I first stumbled upon them killing someone, I saw only one way to make it out alive: be more useful to them alive than dead. So I put my talent to 'good' use, cleaning up all traces of the murder. At least... at least that way, no-one would have to know there was an actual serial killer in their midst. This killer... they were going to keep it up. It didn't matter what I did, they'd keep killing even if I ran, even if I tried to tell the police. At least this way Rattlewater could be a little more peaceful...

"This time was meant to be no different. It just so happened that we both ended up on this same expedition, and Charlie was someone they wanted dead. It was meant to be business as usual... but then the cave-in meant we got separated. The killer couldn't even get to Charlie. I had... no choice but to do as requested and handle more of the murder than usual. If I didn't... if I didn't, then, they'd probably just kill me, and then find some other way to kill Charlie. It wouldn't have mattered what I did, they'd have killed Charlie eventually." He finally looked up, the clear fear in his eyes that of someone too terrified to step out of line. "The last thing I wanted was for her to die. She was... nice. I enjoyed our talk in the armoury after the cave-in. But what I want is irrelevant: they always die. Always."

"Could you at least go into detail 'bout somethin'?" Brandy asked, still trying to keep herself sixty-three percent together. "Why'd they want Charlie dead specifically? If you're sayin' they're a serial killer, then what similarities does Charlie share with the other bodies we've found? Usually them types of killers have a niche..."

"That's... I don't... Y-you don't need to know that for this trial," Seb replied meekly. It seemed he was too afraid of this apparent serial killer to go into any specific details about them.

What did you do with Ms. Church after knocking her out? You were unclear about that.

After finally calming herself enough to write a letter, she once again balled it up, squeezed it for a moment, then threw it at Seb.

"That's... I followed the killer's instructions," Seb replied unhelpfully. "That part of the crime was their idea, everything surrounding it was just to facilitate it." Like before, he seemed unwilling to go into specifics on the matter.

"Well somebody better start makin' sense in this place..." Brandy grumbled. "You do realize jus' sayin' who it is right now will make connectin' pieces easier, right? What, are you cursed or somethin'?"

After a brief pause, she clarified. "And that ain't a joke, 'cause if you're cursed that'd make a lot more sense then you jus' being a pawn out of fear when you know most of us are willin' to help snuff out some raggedy ol' bastard killer."

"I... can't. I just can't," Seb mumbled, looking down again. "Whatever happens from here on, it's not on me. I've told you my involvement, now it's between you all and the killer. Whatever happens, it's not my fault."

Benjamin walked over to Seb's podium and suddenly slapped him across the back of the head. It was clear he wasn't putting much strength into it, but it wasn't particularly light either. "You didn't just make a mistake. You made two--choosing not to die, and then continuing to help him. To support evil like that, and allow him to keep killing... it's almost just as bad."

He slowly walked back to his podium, dragging his ball behind him. "But don't worry, Seb. Regardless of your circumstances now, we will free you from your burden."

His eyes directed immediately towards Bennett. "So then, how about you explain yourself? You were the only one in the upper cavern who had Bruce's whistle--or are you going to claim it was stolen?"

She nervously cleared her throat and looked away. "But that ain't really your business..."

Oliver took great offense to that "redcoat" comment, as he was an Englishman as well. He took so much offense, in fact, that his knees gave way and he collapsed. His heartbeat stopped soon after.

Just kidding. In actuality, a flicker of an offended look appeared on his face for a brief moment before his expression hardened, as he knew that there was still a mystery to solve.

"T-That's..! A serial killer..?!"

Ivan wanted to fight back with some sort of response but had nothing to say except...

"...I-I a-apologize...for my negligence..."

He simply lowered his head again and didn't face Sebastian. How much was being hidden from him..?

"Still...I am here for a reason...if there is a threat, I can help contain it..!"

"K-h-h-h… An icicle as the murder weapon, hmm? That seems to be quite the interesting theory", Belphegor chuckles. "But let me clarify a few things for you here."

"THE WHISTLE WAS FREE TO USE FOR EVERYONE. EVEN IF BENNETT HAD BEEN THE ONE TO DISCOVER IT, ANYONE ELSE COULD HAVE USED IT TO CORRESPOND THROUGH BRUCE."

"CHARLIE WAS ALSO NEVER MOVED AWAY FROM THE LOWER ICE CAVERNS. SHE WAS NOT TRANSPORTED TO THE UPPER ICE CAVERNS IN ANY WAY."

"Hopefully this will help you make sense of things as well."

"Ciro, shut yer trap," Brandy said dismissively. "Belphegor, would there have been any place people from above could've seen into the caverns below? It may not have been mentioned yet, but when Benny and I found the entrance to the lower cavern, we were basically standin' on the ceilin'. You could almost see through, at least bein' able to make out some things below but not much detail. N' there were some icicles below us on the ceilin'."

She sighed. "My question is, I s'pose, if Charlie was never moved from the bottom, and if nobody got in until we found the entrance, hypothetically, could someone have banged on the ceilin' of the lower cavern to get an icicle to fall?"
