Since I linked it to the What if Phoenix wore glasses thread, I might as well link it here.

:ack: Does that mean you have that whole story scanlated/for download somewhere? I'm sorry to barge into the thread late, but that beautiful page you posted has me in raptures and I must see the whole story by any means, I'm sure you understand. XD *coming from someone who has also spent exorbitant amounts of money securing rare/unique doujinshi*
It's so rare that a favourite pairing of mine has such beautiful artwork done for it!

In return I promise to provide some scans in the near future... a friend of mine came back from Japan recently and promised me some Phoneix/Edgeworth doujin. (The only problem being she had to ship her huge stash of DJ home and it'll be a month!) :acro: If only I'd known that Balgus Rec existed!

Anyway. To contribute to the discussion, I'm of the Edgeworth-on-the-bottom camp, and it has nothing to do with elaborate canon reference... I personally find Phoenix very manly (in that jock/sarcastic/rarely-shaved/heroic kind of way) and it's fun to watch them both negotiate what to do when that manliness wants to make itself known!
Possibly TMI, but there you go. :hotti:

I'll think about it. XD There's isn't really a "rest of" to that scene, in terms of the physical, Balgus REC's GS stuff is very light on "romance-romance" and heavy on plot. (That chapter the kiss scene is from is actually Miles and Gregory centric, and is veeery Japanese, so I'm kinda like "guh, how could I 'localize' this? XD") If I can procure the original pamphlets, or another copy of "dear, dear", I'll scanlate the entire thing, all ~200 pages. As it is, I've just been going through and scanning choice bits.

*understands* Thanks for letting me know! And whoa, going through 200 pages is no easy task! Once I tried to get an anthology scanlation project for a different fandom and boy, did that fall flat. ^^'

Anyway, I did a little pic just in thanks for providing us with the other scanlation...

Out of curiosity, how does scanlation work? Is it like, cleanly erasing the characters on the page and typing it in in english yourself?

Oo, that's lovely, Sarah. And, if it makes you feel better, I've put an order in for more P/E doujinshi that look nice and plotty. (Sadly, I'm kind of boring, and rarely get smutty doujinshi) If they're any good, I'll probably end up scanlating them completely.

Well, it depends if you already have scans. For me, I have to translate, scan the page, clean it, erase the Japanese text, fill in the gaps where the text was, then add the translation. It sounds complicated, but it's not that hard. Just a bit time consuming, because I'm hardly an expert at it. (That second page in the two I did with Miles and Adrian was a biiiitch, and still looks pretty sloppy. >_< )

I honestly have never understood the yaoi fangirl obsession with Seme and ukes. It's what annoys me the most about yaoi, personally. There seems to be too much focus on penetration and not enough focus on the sexual equally. At least, that is the yaoi I like.

Like I said, I prefer them reversible, too. But there's time when I like a submissive Phoenix just a little more just because of my weird taste and think it's hot. That's all, really. *shrug* DX

Yes, some people are too warped into who dominates who to realize that being equal lovers is very beneficial.

I've become picky about my BL-stuff, I suppose... I now kinda look away, embarrassed, whenever I see some Gravitation fangirls assume that's how all yaoi should be.....

Gravitation sucks.

Also, bedroom politics are part of a relationship too. I don't believe that Phoenix or Edgeworth are incapable or that they don't take either role depending on their mood, just that they probably have a preference. For the impact it has on their relationship outside the bedroom, it might as well be Rocky Road vs Chocolate Chip Mint.

I don't see the harm in discussing and putting forth opinions, though. Hell, considering I've had in depth discussions about how the cast in general would react when faced with Phoenix's porn stash, this is practically downright normal in comparison. No one in this thread has said whoever bottoms is somehow unequal in the relationship. No one has said whoever bottoms is a weepy caricature of themselves. So unless you think a simple discussion of positioning preferences has something to do with inequality...

The seme/uke issue is kind of a strange one. I think if you go by the original labels, they were VERY rigid about what a seme and an uke had to be (last year I worked on an artbook written by a Japanese yaoi artist, who had done doujinshi and professional work, and her views on Seme/Uke were ridiculously strict). I still see a lot of that in the professional yaoi that comes to America. I agree that I am not fond at all of the traditional implications of the words. It's just boring :(

But most fans these days are a lot more flexible. There are some people who will always demand "PERSON X WOULD NEVER BOTTOM" but there are just as many who like reversible couples.

Though in the end a lot of the time it has more to do with aesthetics than actual powerplay.

(Also, Gravitation sucks butt)

I have no problem with the positions of the men, it's more I'm a little sick of the whole school of thought behind the seme/uke positions. This school of thought also tends to cause the porn to focus SOLELY on the the actual insertion, which isn't my bag. I like seeing the faces and the rest of the body, not just the peni (not a spelling error).

Yeah, seme and uke should only be terms for pitcher and catcher... (And only for the particular sexual session they're referring to. It would suck to be either top or bottom every single time.) The minute you start applying all these personality and (in)equality standards to them, it becomes a ridiculous and boring concept. Why do uke always have to be whiny and weak-willed? Why do seme always have to be jerks with a lot of aggression and machismo? I don't buy it anymore.
With that said, I like Phoenix and Edgeworth both ways, though I like Edgey on top even more. :edgy:
Let's see if I can scout up some fun P + E stuff. (I had some fun with that in my latest "Error & Trial." :redd: )

Edit: God, I hate Gravitation. Shuichi drives me NUTS.

I think a lot of the confusion around definitions like seme/uke, yaoi, BL and slash are because of the histories of Japanese and (to use a blanket term) American fandoms.

I've looked at some academic research on it, and the major movement/genre we call slash came about in the 70's in America, along with feminism and all that jazz. Women were sick of the typical male heroes sweeping the damsels in distress off their feet, so they revolutionised their fandoms by pairing, say, Captain Kirk with Spock instead of the girl of the week. The whole thing was very political, and very much about equality.

I think that's why there's a lot of debate and confusion when the western tradition of fandom meets the Japanese tradition of fandom, in anime & games... the Japanese have always had a tradition of gendered storytelling (onna-e and otoko-e are terms for female and male stories produced in the Heian era), but it was also around the 70's and 80's that yaoi and BL started to pick up as genres.

While slash looks outward to politics and society, yaoi is about the individual women... there are theories about the role of the uke. Have you noticed how it's rare that we'll get close-ups of a seme's sex face, but will always get the uke's? It's been said that one of the reasons for the polarisation of the sex roles into categories of seme and uke is so that a woman can identify with the uke and fantasise about a relationship where gender isn't the primary factor that causes inequality in a relationship, as in Japanese society. It's also important to consider that yaoi is considered a fantasy, an escapism, as in the tradition of manga etc, whereas slash is all about being realistic and peverting heterosexual politics. ;3

Bear in mind, that includes a lot of unsubstantiated theories and generalisations, but I guess it explains to me why there's so much debate about yaoi and roles and realism etc.

It was a bit tl;dr but I love this topic and can't help myself when it's raised. :3 I personally approach doujinshi as a romantic sexy romp through the courts and look for yaoi-esque stories when I want a good old fashioned angsty love tale... but when I want something a bit grittier and more realistic I'll put the characters and their personalities before my enjoyment to stay as true to them as possible. It sounds kind of selfish really! I hope that made sense! ^^'

I'm not sure the last two count, but OH WELL Gant love you long time!

When it comes to seme/uke archetypes, it gets really annoying. I mean, you get some variations (the gentlemanly seme, the lolmanly seme, the shota uke, the weepy uke and the 'spunky' uke) but they're generally all so similar it's like 'Okay...That was like pretty much every other generic BL/Yaoi/Slash fic ever written :/'. Besides, topping from the bottom is so much better, amirite? :garyuu:

(And thanks so much for not, you know, eating my liver at bringing the whole seme/uke thing up, eheheh)

Yes, very well said. I understand what you mean about the polotics and differences. I've been in online fandom for 10 years now (not nearly as long as some fans, but it still feels like a long time!) and it's interesting to watch the way fandom changes, and especially how yaoi/slash have grown and mixed and changed each other. And the terminology is still changing all the time.

Though I contend the idea that Slash was ever meant to be "more realistic" than yaoi. They are different kinds of realism, of course, but my friend who started in X-Files fandom has many a horror story of Skinner giving birth to Mulder's baby, or Mulder the "weepy uke" to Krycheck, etc, and these from authors who had nothing to do with yaoi or Japanese fandom. Maybe it was different in the fanzine days, but I haven't been around long enough to know :B

Slash has never been "more realistic", or at least, that wasn't the reason it came about. Early slash still had strong, somewhat rigid sex roles--and you don't exactly see a lot of mpreg in Japanese BL, as long as we're talking "realism".

BL started out MUCH more rigid than it is right now--if you take a look at some of the stuff that's currently popular in Japan, you'll see "seme" and "uke" aren't as differenciated as much as they used to be--but I think your best bet for non-rigid "roles" comes in "manga with male/male romance in it" as opposed to "manga about male/male romance".
