"Oh yeah. I've never seen someone's hair just fly off their head like that." Nick chuckled. "Uh...did I ever apologize for the whole...evidence...thing?" He cleared his throat and turned his reddened face towards the window.
"Yes, right before you grabbed my boobs." Mia replied.
"What?!" Nick's head whipped towards her so fast he should have sprained it.
"Relax, I'm kidding." Mia chuckled.
"That's not funny..." Nick said like a pathetic whipped puppy.

"Believe me, I wish I had died. You ever get a necklace pumped out of your stomach? Ugh." Nick went pale for a while. "And the only reason the poison residue didn't kill me is because I hadn't chewed up the bottle. I could have had a seizer and collapsed right there at the stand!" He huffed. "God, I was such an idiot! I was just so sure that my little Dollie couldn't-" He stopped himself mid rant and turned his angry glare towards the window. "Sorry. I know you don't want to hear me complain." He sighed and leaned back in his seat.

"It's fine Phoenix. Somehow I get the feeling you're more often listening than complaining." Mia looked straight out the windshield, but her expression indicated that she wasn't really seeing anything. "My first witness died on the stand because of her, and my boyfriend was poisoned by her that day you met her in the reading room. I admit, I was scared you'd be another one of her victims...and Winston Payne sat there chuckling, ready to send you off to jail. I still can't believe that he'd be more concerned about a verdict than someone's life..."

Nick didn't have an immediate answer to that. He could apologize, but that was so cliche.

Mia found herself smiling as she reached over and took one of his hands. "Thanks, Phoenix. It's nice to know someone does think well of me. I don't think I'm as strong as you make me sound though."

Nick's face flushed and he kept his gaze on the window.
"You don't give yourself enough credit, then. If that had happened to me I'd have probably gone nuts." He cleared his throat and focused. It was taking so much energy to not leap over to the other side of the car and kiss her that he was afraid to say anything else.

"Admirable." Phoenix repeated softly. The rain rushed against the car outside and flowed down the window. He couldn't see anything out of it now, but that didn't really matter. His focus was flickering between thoughts and the window was really just an excuse to look distant. It was a trick he'd inadvertently learned from Miles. "You know, maybe I should call him again. Just to make sure he's okay."

"Yeah, you're right." Nick sighed and let the cellphone and the hand holding it slip into his lap. "I really shouldn't worry so much. I mean, Miles is a grown man who can take care of himself and his own problems. In fact, the most he's ever needed me for was to run and get him some tea during boring cases or fetch something from his place that he could use..." Nick laughed. "I wonder if he thinks of me as more of an errand boy than an actual friend?" His tone indicated he was saying that in a jovial manner, but his eyes didn't really match.

Mia shook her head. "With the rain coming down as hard as it is, I'm not surprised it's taking the tow truck a while to get out here, and at this point I think I'll just be glad if we do get a taxi. Based on our luck today, we're probably not going to get a taxi until Miles is already back at his apartment." A smirk crossed her face. "I just want to meet her." Nick shrugged. "She's caused a lot of trouble and...well honestly I want to see what sort of crazy powers she has that helped her convince the entire police force that she was the victim in all of this instead of the man in the hospital." Nick's eyes narrowed as he said this. It was clear that there was still some latent passive hostility towards this sort of thing buried in his subconscious.

Mia watched Phoenix's face as he spoke. Her own tone carried a slight trace of bitterness that matched Phoenix's expression. "Honestly, I'm a little curious myself, but after your case and my first one, I have very little faith in the police department's judgment...especially when a pretty face is involved."

"Yeah, Miles always did get all the pretty ones." Nick replied and his expression instantly brightened. It was obviously a forced attempt at hiding whatever angry or sullen emotion he'd just been struck by. "Though this is probably the first time one was completely crazy. There was a knock on Mia's side of the car and in the thinning rain stood a man in a blue jumper. "I think the tow truck's here." Nick observed. "Funny, I didn't hear it pull up or anything."

"I didn't either. The rain's not that loud..." Mia opened the door and stepped out to talk to the man, shutting the door behind her. After two or three minutes of conversation, Mia opened the door. "He'll give us a ride over to the mechanics. Hopefully, when we get over there we'll be lucky enough to get a taxi."

Nick nodded and got out. As the rain misted down on him he noticed a few strange things. The first was that there was no tow truck to be seen, but instead parked behind them was a big black car. The second was that the large man in the jumper was very large and holding Mia down as he dragged her to that car. The third was that the large man had a large friend who was just about to whang Phoenix upside the head with a thick metal bat. Nick only had time to react to one of these three things. Suffice to say, he picked the wrong one.
"MIA!" He reached out to her right before he was knocked unconscious.

Mia was dragged into the limo and the two large men sat on either side of her. In the seat across from her was a smartly dressed somewhat handsome middle aged man twirling the stem of a rose in his fingers. He was wistfully watching the flower spin before he turned his gaze towards her. He gave her a dry smile and tucked the flower into the lapel of his jacket.
"Ms. Fey, correct?" He didn't need her to answer that question. "I apologize for the barbarics, but I wanted your full attention." He crossed his legs and stretched his arms across the back of his long seat. "You're the one defending Miles Edgeworth, correct? I'm going to need a small favor from you." He smiled and leaned towards her. "You see, I know how much you pride yourself in a fair trial and, I'm a little concerned that when I send you the evidence that will allow you to win you may refuse my kindness." He leaned back again. "You don't wish to refuse my kindness now, do you?" The shaded window that blocked the view through the windshield rolled down and through the rain you could see the third of the large men throwing Phoenix's body against the trunk of Mia's car like he was slapping meat onto a table. Nick was still unconscious.

Mia forced herself to look away from Phoenix's current predicament. Turning her attention to the man across from her, Mia gave him a flat, unfriendly glare. "Why exactly are you 'offering' to help me win this case? It's not a particularly important one, after all."

"It's important to me, and that's all that should matter, correct?" The man replied. Behind him the larger man was just about to punch Phoenix in the face right before his big black eyes popped open. It seemed he quickly assessed the situation and managed to slip out from under the large man's grasp making him punch the trunk of Mia's car. Nick tackled the large man from behind and had his arms wrapped tightly around the man's neck as he was flung and bucked as if he were riding a mechanical bull. Once Nick was thrown off the man cracked his knuckles and followed the body, but it had landed out of range of the window Mia could see through. "I trust that there won't be any problems." The man added, obviously having not noticed the display behind him.

Mia's attention snapped back from the scene outside of the car at the last statement. She needed to end this quickly, or things could get very nasty for Phoenix. "Alright, fine. I'll accept your...'assistance'."

"Oh good. Your evidence will arrive shortly, I expect you to register at accordingly." He smiled. At about the same time Nick had run back into view and was effectively keeping Mia's car between himself and the large man so intent on hurting him. Nick even stuck out his tongue and made a rude gesture at the large man as he climbed onto the hood. But it wasn't until he started mimicking a baboon that steam started to rise from where the rain was pelting against the large man. He stormed over to the side Nick was on, but right before he could yank the spike haired man down he was hit in the head by his own metal bat like a t-ball.
One of the large men next to Mia started to chuckle at this which caused their host to turn and look for himself. Nick was looking at his dented bat with wide eyes and jumped out of the way of the vicious grab that the still conscious thug lurched forward with. He didn't turn to face Mia again until Nick and the large man had run out of view of the window. Surprisingly there was a large amused smile on his face. "You certainly keep interesting company." He chuckled and waved for the large man on the left to let Mia out.

"Oh, no. I'm quite finished." He answered. "Feel free to go about your business. We shouldn't be needing to deal with one another again any time soon. Unless of course you'd like for me to repay the favor. This would make me in your debt. I'd think carefully though. I'm sort of an evil dijin about these things." His dry smile twisted into something more sinister. "Have a nice evening. Unless of course you're in need of a ride. I'll happily take you where ever you'd like to be."

Mia shook her head, eager to be out of the car and away from the situation in general. "Thank you for your offer, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to decline. I think we can manage on our own."

"What a shame. I thought for a moment there I might have been able to have a little fun. Ah well, such as life and all that. The large man held open Mia's door for her and when she stepped out he handed her an open umbrella. Phoenix was just about to accidentally run in front of a confused tow truck driver before the big man chasing him grabbed him by the shirt and yanked him out of the way. The tow truck driver peeled to a sudden stop as Nick sat very confused in the mud and his mugger/savior went back to the limo.
"What the hell was that?!" Nick burst when the limo had driven off and Mia had been standing over him with an umbrella for a good full minute.

Mia looked back at the direction the limo had driven off in. "Honestly, I'm not quite sure...The man in the limo seemed to be some kind of mob boss, but he was trying to force me to accept his 'assistance' in Miles' case." She sighed and offered Phoenix a hand up. "Well, I think we'd best get out of here before something else happens."

"Ugh, I'm all wet and bloody and covered in mud." Nick complained as they walked over to the tow truck man. He was not at all amused.

After some dealing Mia's car was hooked up to his truck and Nick had managed to get them a taxi that arrived just as Mia was paying the tow truck guy. The rain was starting to fall harder again as the two got into the taxi.
"Where to?" The driver asked. He didn't bother to inquire as to why Nick was in such a sorry looking state, but then the back of his cab made Phoenix look like a golden god of cleanliness. "Uh." Nick looked over at Mia.
