((This is right after her audition. I know I'm late, but I had to make food. It turned out bad, anyway. >.<))

Ellen smiled; a sincere smile that masked the scar deep inside her. "Thank you," she breathed, trying not to cry, herself. She wasn't quite sure what to do next, but she figured she would get some kind of information at one point or another.

((This part afterwards can happen before or after she gets the information. Your choice.))

Ellen slumped down on the nearest chair she could find and buried her face in her hands, breathing deeply. Memories flashed painfully into her head. Why am I such an idiot?! she groaned in her head. I should have known better... I should have been nicer. ... Why am I thinking about this now? She looked at her hands for whatever reason -- a single tear was resting on her open palms. Could that song have triggered these memories? No, that's impossible. Music is powerful, but not THAT powerful.

((EDIT: Boo-yeah, baby! Page pwn! ... I'm okay.))

((I'm not entirely sure what event you are referring to, but so far, it fits with the current story)).

"Ellen, are you alright? It seems as though the song backfired a bit, triggering some kind of memory." The agent asked, seeing if she was ok. The turnout today is incredible! I didn't think there were this many people. All the better to recruit.

Seeing the girl who'd been an instant smash-hit with the agents (probably for the music... or something else...) distrssed, Stefan almost went over to comfort her on impulse. However, he calmed the impulse. He could not provide proper emotional help - he had enough trouble in that area as it is. However, he doubted there was anything else to do, and the agents would be too tied up with audiions to do anything... Ach, well.

"What's wrong?" he asked, walking over to her, and sitting on the seat nect to her.

I walked swiftly in the doors. I kept my sunglasses and hair down. I saw a girl walk in and sing really good! I clapped and I checked out all the other people in line.
I sat down on the floor and listened to people sing. Some were good and some were bad.
I spied the girl who had sung marvolesly. She seemed to be sad.
"That was really good...how long have you been singing?" I asked her curiously. Another person was sitting next to her. "Sorry am I interrupting anything?"

Ellen jumped at the sound of the agent's voice. She quickly withdrew her growing tears -- she had grown quite good at masking her inner scars. "N-No, sir," she stammered, smiling a bit. "The song's just really emotional, is all. I'm okay, really."

As the agent walked off* (she assumed he was a bit too busy to bother with her for very long) Ellen sighed and leaned back in the chair. "What's wrong?" a new voice asked. Ellen's eyes popped open as she turned to see a black-haired boy sitting in the seat next to her. He looked to be a couple of years younger than her.

Am I really that obvious? she thought, feeling herself blush from embarrassment. "Nothing," she replied simply. The mask she wore here was a plain one that bore no expression. "Why do you ask?" As if I didn't already know. For some reason, Ellen began to feel like somewhat of an idiot.

((*Sorry about that, but I'm trying to keep this consistent with both above posts, and I didn't want Ellen to be overwhelmed. You can make him come back or something, if you want.

EDIT: Oy, you people move too fast... Maybe I should make my posts shorter and/or not spell check all of them...))

**oops sorry...will do...I'll redo my stuff sorry.*

Cassie signed her name on the paper and sighed. She couldn't believe that they didn't let her in to check out the competition unless she tried out. She filled out the sheet:
Name: Cassie Flounder.
Instroment: Guitar/ piano

She was next in line and was prepared. She got her guitar and was waiting to be called. Cassie was hoping she could keep her sunglasses on to hide her appearance.
She stared at her Black Nails. She hadn't been on stage for a while now. She glared at her High healed boots.

((I'm sorry.))

"Oh, sorry." Stefan became slightly embarassed. His nervous habit kicked in, and his left eyelid started twitching subconciously. He tried not to fiddle with his hair - his other habit. "Um, you looked distressed, um, I wondered what was wrong." His eyes glanced to the right - he could never look someone in the eye properly. As if a twitching eyelid would help with that.

Cassie took out a mirror and checked out her reflection in the mirror. Her glasses were straight and that's what she was looking at.
Now she was perfectly ready.

Ellen noticed the stranger's eye twitching and his distant gaze. What's wrong with him? she thought, fiddling with the drumsticks. (Yes, she's had them with her the whole time.) Her eyes gazed down toward her actions. I get it. It must be a habit or something. "No, I'm not distressed. I was just... a bit shocked at how I did with the song. Plus, it's such a sad song..." It was times like this that Ellen questioned her own personality. She would always be somebody different when she met new people. Only a few people saw her for who she truly was -- a rock girl with broken dreams and a shattered past. Pretty much everybody else saw a different mask. She had met this man with a blank one -- it was time for her to paint a new face.

"I saw your audition," she began, picking up her figurative paintbrush. "Do you always show off like that." She smiled a bit. Time for the happy rocker facade.

((Trust me, you'll understand why Ellen acts this way later.))

((I'm looking forward to it.))

He smiled slightly - but only that. Again, he wasn't one for emotional displays. His eyes flicked toward her when asnwered her question, and his eyelid stopped twitching. "Yes. Otherwise, I'm just glazed over as a completely normal person who can't play. Mind you, I'm not bad as some people... Not you, sorry." His eye twitched again. Dammit. However, he did ponder her quick mood change for a moment - then passed it off. He often did that himself.

((I know this is random, but I think I'm about to prove you can commit suicide through laughter. Ain't life great? ^_^))

Ellen glanced at him for a few moments, as if trying to find the right words to fit in with her new "face" while trying to figure out what was bothering this man. "You were pretty good, actually. I'm not very experienced with guitars, but you sounded good to me." She forced herself to laugh. "If you had been playing the clarinet, I might be able to give you a better critique." The painting was coming together now. Just a few more brushstrokes, and the mask would be perfect. "I'm Ellen, by the way." Brushstroke number one.

Stefan laughed for a single moment, then become all-tpgether more serious, fixing her with a glare as he spoke. "Flattery will get you know where." As if nothing had happaned, Stefan snapped back to his normal mood. "I don't exactly have the lungs for wind instruments. Oh, and I am Stefan Soan, by the way." Stefan brushed some hair from his eyes. His eye had stopped twitching during his talking, and he was now attempting to seem relaxed - which was hard when he was trying to stay focused on the conversation.

Ellen felt a bit nervous at the glare. Her hand slipped from her masterpiece, but she quickly recovered and continued her "painting." "Nice to meet you, Stefan. And I know what you mean. I almost passed out playing once... but I was playing for some really important people." She could tell Stefan was at least trying to relax a bit. If only she could say the same for herself. You know, Craig, this would be a lot easier if you were still around... She stopped her mental train of thought. Listen to me. It sounds like we're fighting again...

"You're acting like a big baby over this!"

"Ellen, I don't know if you've noticed or not, but I'm dying!"

"No you're not, Craig. No, you're not! You can't be! You're... you're too strong... Not everybody dies from this, right? Tell me I'm right!"

"Ellen... just leave."

"Craig..."

"LEAVE!"

Ellen silently cursed these memories and let her mind wander back to the conversation at hand.

((Man, I'm pretty much milking the whole "painting" metaphor for all it's worth, huh?))

He nodded at the statement. "When I was in a two-person band, my partner set himself on fire to get us in the newspapers... It worked as well. Not for our performance, though." He laughed slightly at the memory. "He went missing after that, though... Ah, well. Where did you get the drumsticks from?" he asked, but he instantly regretted the question. He hadn't meant to intrude on anything private.

The person who called her up seemed rather happy with himself. Cassie took out her guitar and started singing. She started strumming softly and then she got louder. She opened her mouth and sang:

Now that it's all said and done,
I can't believe you were the one
To build me up and tear me down,
Like an old abandoned house.
What you said when you left
Just left me cold and out of breath.
I fell too far, was in way too deep.
Guess I let you get the best of me.

Well, I never saw it coming.
I should've started running
A long, long time ago.
And I never thought I'd doubt you,
I'm better off without you
More than you, more than you know.
I'm slowly getting closure.
I guess it's really over.
I'm finally getting better.
And now I'm picking up the pieces.
I'm spending all of these years
Putting my heart back together.
'Cause the day I thought I'd never get through,
I got over you.

You took a hammer to these walls,
Dragged the memories down the hall,
Packed your bags and walked away.
There was nothing I could say.
And when you slammed the front door shut,
A lot of others opened up,
So did my eyes so I could see
That you never were the best for me.

Well, I never saw it coming.
I should've started running
A long, long time ago.
And I never thought I'd doubt you,
I'm better off without you
More than you, more than you know.
I'm slowly getting closure.
I guess it's really over.
I'm finally getting better.
And now I'm picking up the pieces.
I'm spending all of these years
Putting my heart back together.
'Cause the day I thought I'd never get through,
I got over you.

Well, I never saw it coming.
I should've started running
A long, long time ago.
And I never thought I'd doubt you,
I'm better off without you
More than you, more than you know.

Well, I never saw it coming.

I'm slowly getting closure.
I guess it's really over.
I'm finally getting better.
And now I'm picking up the pieces.
I'm spending all of these years
Putting my heart back together.
Well I'm putting my heart back together,
'Cause I got over you.
Well I got over you.
I got over you.
'Cause the day I thought I'd never get through,
I got over you.

She looked at the judge waiting. She just wanted to know what he thought of the new song that was on their new album.

The agent were talking amongst themselves, nodding in agreement. Then, another, more important looking agent entered the room. "Guys, this is not American Idol! Make Stefan and Cassie go again." The agent said, then left the room.

"...Why?" Stefan asked, folding his arms. "I did it once, once should be enough, sic?" He slipped in just a little bit of Latin at the end. "I only had one song ready, and the only other I've got is seven minutes and a half long... it's wasting your time, si?" This confirmed that Stefan liked saying 'Yes' in every language that wasn't English.

That agent was still in earshot. "This isn't American Idol, dumbass! Play again or you will be eliminated!" Who the hell does he think he is? The way things are going now, he won't last against Taro, and he played the air guitar. The agent laughed at this thought.

"Mmhm. It isn't America Idol, correct. However, I want you to tell me why you want only two out of four people who auditioned to do audition twice. Or is this the X-Factor?" Stefan sighed. He did get up, and get ready, but didn't start playing until it was confirmed why he would have to play twice, and if he should just waste his time playing the same song again.

"Oh, wow. Go, numbers. The air-guitar dude, Ellen, me, and 'Cassie'. That makes four, doesn't it? And you've asked me and 'Cassie' to audition again. Why? We've given our ideal song and such. While I could probably do better, I still want to know why."

That agent sighed, and walked back to the room, scratching his head on the way Now how many people came to the audition again?. "Cassie's song, be it guitar or vocal, canceled each other out. Your song as the same. You do need to try again, either like Taro and his air guitar," that agent chuckled a bit, "or like Ellen. It's a music competition, not American Idol. In Ellen's case, her voice is her instrument."

"Fine I'll redo mine!" Cassie cried. "Let me go get my keyboard out of my car!"

5 minutes later...

"All right I'm ready! This song is my own.." Cassie set her keyboard up and sang:

Please don't make me cry again
I'd do anything
I'd give everything
Just to be back in happyness.

You know you want me
You know you need me
So don't push me away.

Everytime you speak
My heart skips a beat
My heart feels so warm
Just to hear your voice.

You know you want me
You know you need me
So don't push me away.

Everytime you touch me
A spark is lit in my heart
My heart is flaming
And now you claim my heart.

You know you want me
You know you need me
So don't push me away.

Everytime you kiss me
My voice is shaking
My world is quaking
Just don't push me down.

You know you want me
You know you need me
So don't push me away.

I stepped off the stage with my keyboard and waited.

*hehe what did you think of that? I came up with that myself!*

"As cool as that sounds, which one are you attempting to use?" That agent said, hoping she would catch on. This whole operation is going to be harder than we thought. I thought these people knew the value of music.

"... Such can be said for multitasking, ja?" Stefan sighed. He played the same song again, but didn't attempt to show anything off. He finished, sighed, and sat back down. "There, happy?" he muttered, putting rhg guitar back in it's case. He muttered in something in Russian, then returned to waiting.

"Singing is powerful. It can change one's emotions. Instruments are also powerful. They can be used for a variety of reasons. Singing and playing an instrument cancel each other out. So based on this info, what are you trying to accomplish? That goes for you too, Stefan."

"Music is entirely based on one's perception of it. I didn't come here for a lecture, I had enough of that in college. I come here to play something, I played it. Doesn't take a great deal of logic." Stefan sighed. "And if they cancel each other out, I really do think you could tell that to The Beatles, and every other band, sic?"

"And that's why the EBA exist. We use songs like that to save the day. Since the song and instruments cancel each other out, we must use the beats hidden within the song. Now do you want to try again or not?"

*who are you talking to?*

She stopped and sat by the girl who had sang earlier. "Your song was amazing. How long have you been singing like that?"
